Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland, by Tomie dePaola

From Publishers Weekly

Fans of the prolific dePaola's heartfelt celebrations of religious themes will welcome this handsome picture-book biography. His signature style is well showcased here and, as he did in The Lady of Guadalupe , dePaola effectively integrates both the tones and design elements of (in this case) Celtic art into his renderings. As with his pictorial biography Francis: The Poor Man of Assisi , dePaola succeeds in placing a near-mythic religious figure within a historic context and successfully relates the familiar and not-so-familiar details of his life: Patrick was of British (although when it was a part of the Holy Roman Empire), not Celtic, ancestry; March 17 is the date of his death, not of his birth. Readers will particularly enjoy the addition of five legends about St. Patrick, including the snakes and the shamrock. This well-designed entry has perennial appeal. Ages 4-8. From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 4-- For answering requests for information about St. Patrick, this is the ideal book to replace a page in the encyclopedia or a pictureless chapter in a musty old book of saints. The story opens with his kidnapping as a boy and youth as a slave in Ireland, and recounts his escape to his family in Britain, the inspiring vision that led him to return as Ireland's first bishop, and the spread of Christianity on the Emerald Isle under his leadership. dePaola's palette is dominated by earth and moss tones, and works to convey a distinctly Celtic flavor. An arresting use of space runs the gamut from double-page spreads to half-page illustrations. This constantly shifting balance of art and text adds action to the tale. The book concludes with a collection of one-page vignettes describing a few colorful legends about St. Patrick. This approach may give some readers pause as they try to distinguish between these legends and certain events in the body of the story that could also be considered legendary. Then again, this setup could be no more incongruous than the role that Patrick himself has come to play--that of folk hero and saint. This admirable picture-book offering will fill a gap in most collections. --Lisa S. Murphy, Dauphin County Library System, Harrisburg, PACopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

First of all let me say that I am biased because I LOVE Tomie de Paola's books. All of them. My kids have them and we have read them again and again over the years. Love the illustrations and the true stories that he tells. I ordered this as a first communion gift for my sweet neighbor boy Paddy, who is named after St. Patrick. He loved it and his parents loved it. What a special little book! It's paperback but still very nice.

My kids loved reading this for St Patrick's Day! I liked the way it treated the more objective parts of his history first, and then had an added section of legends about St Patrick that included the reported miracles (like driving all the snakes out of Ireland by playing a drum). Illustrations are lovely, as I would expect from de Paola, and text is excellent for kids. My daughter keeps asking to re-read it.

Brought this book to share with my children and their classmates prior to St. Patrick's Day. Tomie dePaola is a wonderful author and illustrator and I try to purchase all of his books, especially the ones with religious themes. This is a good book that gives more information about St. Patrick and keeps the kids attention with the clear text and beautiful illustrations.

I loved this book! I have always celebrated St Patrick's day because of my Irish heritage but I never knew the history behind the actual saint. I loved learning right alongside my children. I especially appreciated how he added the legends at the back, but kept them seperate from the history- great for young kids learning the diference between fact and fiction.

Beautiful pictures and wonderful story to share with my three year old for many years to come!

We are taking my daughter and grandchildren to Ireland and I wanted them to know a little about the country

It was a great story to read to my students during St. Patrick's day to help us better understand a great saint!

This is not only the story of Saint Patrick but also includes certain myths about him at the end as well. It is nice and short for younger kids.

Review

The title of this book is somewhat misleading and does not do justice to its contents. One expects a book with such a general title to contain basic descriptions of digestion, absorption and utilisation of nutrients, with sections on nutrient requirements and growth rate just like any other standard text. Instead, it contains very detailed critical reviews of the biotechnology of animal nutrition. According to the Preface, the omission of quantitative aspects of nutrition and feed evaluation was intentional. Having said that, the book is excellent and, to be fair, it does cover the topics listed on the back cover. Much of the information that the book does contain is on topics of current importance, particularly in view of the ban on antibiotic growth promoters in Europe. These growth promoters provided producers with a degree of insurance against possible effects of dietary ingredients on digestive upsets. More attention has to be paid now to the quality of animal feed ingredients and how they might lead to responses other than changes in growth rate and feed conversion efficiency, although these are still important. The book focuses mainly on dietary modulation of gastrointestinal function, but also considers the immune response and other aspects of animal health that are influenced by nutrition. The general theme is that specific feed ingredients alter the gut microflora, enzymes and absorptive capacity, and that these alterations have implications for animal performance. In terms of dietary components, the emphasis is on feed additives, bioactive components and anti-nutritional factors rather than macronutrients such as carbohydrates, protein and lipids. In addition, there are chapters covering safety and legal aspects of ingredients for animal feeds. Each chapter stands alone and there is therefore some inevitable overlap. However, the overlapping topics are usually considered from a different perspective each time. The 21 reviews have been written by active researchers who are acknowledged experts in their respective fields. Each review is up to date and is written to a high scientific level. The technical editing has also been performed to a high standard to provide continuity of style. There are many clear illustrations that support the text, explaining concepts such as nutritional effects on gut morphology, intracellular mechanisms for absorption, metabolic pathways and disease. The tables and graphs are generally clear and useful, although a few graphs are below standard and used defaults offered by spreadsheets.Overall, the book is very informative and should be useful for anyone who wants a comprehensive set of topical reviews on the biotechnology of animal feed additives, gut microbiology and physiological responses. It is not, however, a book on the biology of nutrition.Dr Phil GarnsworthyReader in Dairy ScienceUniversity of NottinghamThe review is now in press with the Elsevier Journal Livestock Science.
