As a newspaper columnist and trained social psychologist who loved "In The Kingdom of Ice" and "Ghost Soldiers," also by Mr. Sides, I came to "Americana" with high expectations... although of exactly what I wasn't sure. It turns out that the author can not only devote years of research into stunning episodes in American history but also descriptively nip away at the underbelly of American society. With equal respect for our country's heroes (e.g., "First" which provides a brilliant portrait of the first U.S. combat casualty during the second Iraq war), yahoos (e.g., "Smells Like Zippy Spirit," "Sisters of the Bowl") and just plain colorful characters (virtually all the remaining stories), Sides manages to combine great writing with sharp reporting and a wry sense of humor. This is the real America we love, not necessarily the more two-dimensional one featured on the evening news or the one described by such perfectly capable correspondents as Charles Kouralt. I doubt that anyone will enjoy each of these 30 essays equally, but no doubt everyone will have several favorite pieces that will stick with them and perhaps call out for a second or third read. Few writers could have ever pulled off a collection quite like "Americana."

Hampton Sides is an excellent writer and story teller. He also is very good with widely divergent topics as witnessed by his excellent "Ghost Soldiers" and "Blood and Thunder". In this book, "Americana", Sides the magazine reporter offers a compelling collection of stories that display some of the wide and ranging interests that define America in our day.The reader will ride the Iditarod Trail and skateboards in two of the essays - the first exploring a celebration of the last frontier in America and the latter the phenomenon of Tony Hawk.Readers will also explore the national spelling bee, the earth travelers who inhabited Biosphere (remember that?), Pentecostal worshipers and more somber topics like 9-11 survivors and a Marine hero killed in Iraq.Bass fishing, a secret conclave of powerful men who meet in the woods and the Sturgis Harley-Davidson meet up are delved into along with numerous other pictures of "Americana."Although this book is unlike Ghost Soldiers or Blood and Thunder in that it is a collection of discreet portraits and not a single story, the essays are fascinating and Sides handles them well. Some of those covered will strike readers as "off their rockers" but the author never belittles nor humiliates those who people his writings. He just tells well-crafted stories and gives the characters time and space to reveal their passion and interest in the topic at hand. Sides is an excellent storyteller and anyone interested in delving into some of the edges of this nation will appreciate his collection.

I find the writer's style to be wonderful. The short stories in this book are based on first hand experience. One of the stories I read in this book was about his experience with "Mormon archaeology." Mr. Sides details his meetings with many Mormon researchers at BYU and at FARMs and I find his experiences to be highly similar to mine when I lived in Utah. (You readers out there, you have to read Mr. Sides "In the Kingdom of Ice.")

This is a collection of marvelous articles, most of which (I believe) appeared in Outdoor Magazine. Hampton Sides is one of the best writers I've encountered in years. It's obvious that he is fascinated by people and thoroughly enjoys writing about them. He's one of those authors that makes it all look so easy, even though it's obvious that he puts a lot of time, effort and research into what he writes. This collection is wonderful. After reading it, I bought several more of his books.

Mr. Sides never disappoints. This is an interesting collection of stories about people I would not otherwise have known about. As always, he brings characters to life with vivid prose, he chooses subjects that are fascinating and he doesn't indulge in hyperbole, allowing the story to take shape naturally and seems to take care not to pontificate or push his personal agenda. I'm almost done with his catalog, Kingdom of Ice is next, don't know what I'll do when I'm done; wish he could write as fast as I read.

I must have been in the mood for essays after Bryson's book about the summer of '27 in America so this one was a nice continuation. A lot of different, interesting topics from "Airstreaming" retirees, to cavers to bass fishing. But probably the most powerful writing is on the experience of the those at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Pretty tough to come away from those stories with dry eyes.

In "Americana,"Sides explores "our knack for spawning subcultures." He writes that "Ours is a land of refined fanaticism. Anything we might dream of doing, we can find a society of Americans who are already doing it and doing it so intensely that they've organized their lives aorund it." He thus takes us to a gathering of Airstream owners, to a boot camp for would-be counter-terrorists, to Sturgis, to the Bassmasters finals. But fanaticism has its evil side as well, and Sides' ability to report and write is so good that it becomes painful -- though important -- to read his closing stories about 911 and its aftermath.

Some truly great stories, unfortunately most of them took place over 20 year ago so it was hard to connect with them. Hampton Sides is a great writer and I have read some good stuff from him. This was also well done. Just a little outdated.

I bought this book several years ago for the purpose of research, it gave me interesting and insightful information that helped.Shahak's style is easy to read with well documented footnotes. Shahak is Jewish but he does not seem to allow this to prejudice his views. He takes an honest look at Judaism and it's teachings, how those teachings have and still do affect every aspect of Jewish life. He draws at times from his own experience. He has drawn flak from orthodox Jews because of his forthrightness and the fact that Judaism is not portrayed in a good light. I have chosen to give it five stars because it was helpful for me.I do recommend this book if you are wanting to understand judaism and it's teachings a little better.

Israel Shahuk does excellent work in his book “Jewish History, Jewish Religion” in capturing the essence of the Jewish religious ideology, many aspects of which are probably little known by many Jews. Shahuk provides clear evidence of Jewish fanaticism and contempt for the non-Jew, whether Arab or Gentile. The most horrifying acts of oppression in the West Bank are motivated by Jewish religious fanaticism. Just as all poisonous snakes are poisonous, it seems the most radical and fanatical doctrines of Jewish religion and Ideology are just as dangerous to world peace than any radical Islamic fundamentalism belief. While Americans are bombarded by news media of how dangerous Arab suicide bombers are, how little we as Americans are made aware of the danger within Jewish religious ideology. Perhaps its time we should. Shahuk notes he was once an admirer of Ben-Gurion and admits he initially embraced Ben-Guion’s supposed reasons for Israel initiating the Suez War. Shahuk notes he changed to an ardent opponent of Ben-Gurion after listening to Ben-Gurion’s speech before the Knesset on the third day of the Suez Canal war. Shahuk’s admiration ended when Ben-Gurion revealed the real reason for Israel initiating the war; it was “the restoration of the kingdom of David and Solomon to its Biblical borders.” Israel’s pretentious ambitions of engulfing neighboring countries has become a continuing theme with Israeli leaders. In May 1993 Ariel Sharon formally proposed at a Likud convention that Israel should adopt the “Biblical borders concept as its official policy.” Shahuk notes no one asked Sharon where exactly are the Biblical borders which he urged Israel should attain. What were these biblical borders of King David and Solomon from thousands of years ago that Ben-Gurion and Ariel Sharon speak of? There are a number of discrepant versions of Biblical borders of the Land of Israel which are being circulated by rabbinical authorities. The most radical versions include the following areas which must be included to bring Israel’s borders to the size of the Biblical Land of King David: in the south, all of Sinai and part of northern Egypt up to the environs of Cairo; in the east, all of Jordan and a large part of Saudi Arabia, all of Kuwait and a part of Iraq south of the Euphrates; in the north, all of Lebanon, and all of Syria together with a huge part of Turkey, up to Lake Van; and in the west, all of Cyprus. Many influential leaders in Israel such as Gush Emunim and the late Kahane and his followers not only desire the conquest of those territories by Israel, but they regard it as a divinely commanded act, sure to be successful since it is aided by God. It seems a sacrilege that God’s name is mentioned in the same sentence with such pretentious ambitions that will inevitably result in the death of hundreds of millions, with nothing more than a scorched earth remaining. Israeli-Jewish society and the diaspora Jews who lead Jewish lives are organized into purely Jewish organizations and are said to have a strong streak of totalitarianism within them. Leninists who followed the principles of Marx and Lennon and Hitler’s movement in Germany led to earth shattering ends. Seeds of destruction often begin with a totalitarianism of thought. The results of Israel’s totalitarian society will be no different. The Talmud and Talmudic literature contains very offensive statements, directed specifically against Christianity. The Talmud for example, states Jesus should be punished in hell by being immersed in boiling excrement. Such language isn’t particularly endearing to devout Christians but American news media will never be a vehicle to diffuse such information as long as Zionists hold the key. The Talmud instructs Jews to burn, publicly if possible, any copy of the new Testament that comes into their hands. As described in Shahuk’s book, on March 23, 1980 in Jerusalem, the Yad Le’alchim, a Jewish religious organization subsidized by the Israeli Ministry of Religion publicly and ceremonially burnt hundreds of copies of the New Testament. Can anyone imagine U.S. news media coverage permitted by Zionists to cover such events? What are the roots of this Jewish fundamentalism that pose such a threat to peace in the Middle East. During certain periods of Jewish Russian history rabbinical authority censorship became very strict. During these periods, rabbinical leadership substituted the terms “Arab” or “Muslim” at their discretion. A list of Talmudic Omissions circulated in a manuscript form followed next and explained all the new terms and omissions in the Talmud versions. During this period, it wasn’t uncommon for Jewish leaders to direct derogatory expressions in the Talmud toward a specific racial group. For example, following the British conquest of India some rabbis claimed derogatory expressions were only intended against the Indians. These deceptive practices seemed to end when the State of Israel came into being. All offensive passages and expressions were restored without hesitation in new text editions. However, as noted by Shahuk, because of the costs of the newer editions, Talmudic literature and the Talmud was often reprinted from the older editions. For this reason, Talmudic Omissions was also commonly published. Shahuk notes, there’s a cheap printed edition of Talmudic omissions, the Hesronot Shase, that is readily available in Israel and commonly taught to Jewish children. Passages in the Hesronot Shase include a command that every Jew, whenever passing a cemetery, utter a blessing if the cemetery is Jewish but to curse the mothers of the dead if the cemetery is non-Jewish. Writings such as this don’t breed an Israeli society with tolerance and mutual respect toward non-Jews such as Christians and Muslims. In comparison to the harsh wishes that Jesus is boiled in excrement and school children are taught to curse the mothers of the dead in non-Jewish cemeteries, how does the Muslim’s Koran view Christians and Jews? Is there the same hateful contempt for those outside their religion as are found in the Jewish Talmud? Here are some passages from the Koran for your consideration: Quran Chapter 2, Verse 62 “Surely those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians…whoever believes in God and the last day and does good, they shall have their reward from God” Quran Chapter 57, Verse 27“Then we followed up these messengers, with Jesus, son of Mary, to whom we gave the gospel, and we put in the hearts of his followers, kindness and mercy” In 1962 a part of the Jewish Maimonidean Code referred to as the so-called Book of Knowledge was published in a bilingual edition, with the English translation facing the Hebrew text. Excerpts from this text include commands to exterminate Jewish infidels such as “It is the duty to exterminate then with one’s own hands.” The Hebrew version of the text specifies who are the infidels, “Such as Jesus of Nazareth and his pupils, and Tzadoq and Baitos and their pupils, may the name of the wicked rot.” Not one word of who, such Jesus and his followers, are clarified as the infidels on the facing page in English translation. Maimonides was an anti-Black racist. His published Guide to the Perplexed is considered to be the greatest work of Jewish religious philosophy. In Book III, chapter 51 Maimonides discussed how to attain supreme religious values and the true worship of God. Maimonides however indicated, there are those incapable of ever attaining such a level of Grace in praising God as is evident by the passage:“Some of the Turks and the nomads in the North, and the blacks and the nomads of the South, and those who resemble them in our climates. And their nature is like the nature of mute animals, and according to my opinion they are not on the level of human beings, and their level among existing things is below that of a man and above the monkey, because they have the image and the resemblance of a man more than a monkey does.” Shahuk sites many examples in writings of Jewish philosophy and religion that establishes a subservient role of all other humans below that of a Jew. An example that best captures Shahuk’s effort to reveal Jewish philosophy’s contempt toward other religion and cultures is the attitude of the Hassidic Movement. One of the most important branches of Hassidism was the Habbad movement and the book the Hatanya reflects their religious ideological principles. According to the book, all non-Jews are totally satanic creatures “in whom there is absolutely nothing good.” Even a Jewish embryo is qualitatively different than a non-Jew’s embryo. The book claims the very existence of a non-Jew is “inessential,” whereas all of creation was created solely for the sake of the Jew. This book is circulated in countless editions and its ideas are further propagated in the numerous “discourses” by the Fuehrer of Habbad, the so-called Lubavitcher rabbi, M. M. Scheeurssohn, who leads his world-wide organization from New York headquarters. Habbad propaganda and dissemination among the public was stepped up in schools and military before Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in March 1978. Former Israeli President Shazar was an avid follower of the Habbad movement. Prime Minister Begin has publically supported it as well. Shahuk comments the Habbad movement and its followers constantly publish the most rabid bloodthirsty statements against all Arabs. Shahuk sites another example of the Hassidic movement, work first published by Martin Buber in Germany during the accession of Nazism to power. Buber’s work opposed Nazi doctrines about Jews, teaching a doctrine about non-Jews in much the same light. Buber had a disdain toward non-Jews no different than Nazism’s poor view of Jews. Whereas Hitler’s Nazism fell out of favoritism with the fall of Germany, Buber’s work was translated into Hebrew and has become a powerful element of the Hebrew education in Israel. Buber’s work absorbed by the Hassidic movement further empowers Hassidic leaders in Israel to propagate the rise of Israeli chauvinism and contempt for all non-Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. Shahuk addresses the meaning of the word “Jewish.” According to Israeli law there are three methods to recognize someone as “Jewish.” The first method incorporates the Talmudic definition of who is a “Jew” and who isn’t, a method followed by Jewish Orthodoxy. By this means, a person is considered Jewish if his/her mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great, great grandmother were all Jewesses by religion. The Talmudic and post-Talmudic rabbinic law also recognizes the conversion of a non-Jew to Judaism as a method of becoming Jewish, provided the conversion is performed by authorized rabbis in a proper manner. The “proper manner” entails, for females, their inspection by three rabbis while the person is naked in a “bath of purification.” The term “Jewish” also requires the person never converted from Judaism to another religion, in which Israel no longer considers the person “Jewish.” It does seem rather odd three rabbis must see a woman naked in a bath before allowing her passage of becoming a Jew. The state of Israel officially discriminates in favor of Jews and against non-Jews in many domains of life. Such discrimination includes the right to work, the right to equality before the laws and residency rights. The discrimination in residency is based on the fact that approximately 92% of Israel’s land is the property of the state of Israel and is administered by the Israel land authority according to regulations issued by the Jewish National Fund (JNF), an affiliate of the World Zionist Organization. While a Jew is not prohibited from taking residence or opening a business anywhere in Israel, according to JNF regulations, the non-Jew is not permitted to reside or open a business and often cannot work in Israeli lands. This last condition, the right to work, is not strictly adhered to, though it’s not uncommon for the Agriculture Ministry to take measures against “the pestilence of letting fruit orchards belonging to Jews and situated on National land be harvested by Arab laborers,” even if the laborers, though not Jewish, are citizens of Israel. Israel also strictly prohibits Jews who settled on “National Land” to sub-rent a part of their land to Arabs, even for a short time. Those Jews who do so take the risk of being punished and facing heavy fines. Alternatively, and not surprising, there is no prohibition on non-Jews from renting their lands to a Jew. Shahuk explains the “Law of Return” and how only persons recognized as “Jewish” have an automatic right of entry to Israel and of settling on it. Jews who emigrate from the former USSR for example receive an absorption grant of more than $20,000 per family. Perhaps we as Americans could take the billions we normally give away to Israel every year and instead, provide it as a means for displaced Palestinians to return to the Palestinian lands. What’s the chance such a policy would occur with so many Congressmen bought by AIPAC, such as John McCain, Lieberman or Richard Durbin? Land once considered the “State of Israel,” according to the 1947 UN mandate, is now referred to as the “Land of Israel” as the greedy self-serving Likud party and Netanyahu believe the lands they seized since 1967 belong to them. These additional lands are viewed by Jews as “redeemed,” since the land is seized from non-Jews. As noted by Shahuk, it is this ideological principle of lands being redeemed by Israeli Jews, with God’s blessing, that guides their action. The Mossad and Israel have committed many acts over the years that have remained unknown to Americans and British citizens, mostly due to public propaganda. Take for example the Mossad’s Operation Trojan, the basis of which, led to the American bombing of Libya. For years the Zionists and AIPAC have had the reigns of America’s news media. Even such atrocities as Israel purposely attacking and injuring or killing 70% of the US sailors aboard the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967, the most sophisticated communications ship in the world in 1967 and Jonathan Pollard stealing an estimated one million pages of intelligence with Israel’s complicity has remained unknown to most Americans. George Ball notes, Jonathan Pollard is how Israel stole our cluster bomb technology and sold it to other countries. Undersecretary of State George Ball’s “The Passionate Attachment” and Jeff Gates’ “Guilt by Association” are worthy additions for your personal library and include the truth about the USS Liberty and Pollard. Read these two books and let there be one less fool in the world. Israelis must oust the right wing Likud Party and seek peace with the Palestinians, with equal rights for all, dismissing any and all Jewish Ideology that foregoes equal rights between the Jews and the Palestinians. Without doing so, there’s really no hope for Israel to live in peace. Norman Finkelstein, Miko and Matti Peled, Israel Shihuk and many other authors love Israel and fear its inevitable downfall if the right-wing Likud party continues to hold a death grip on its political policy, advocating they are doing God’s work as they seize lands of neighboring countries. Such thinking will lead to war, not peace. This death grip involves Israeli soldiers shoving their boots onto the necks of Palestinians. There will eventually be a pushback from Muslims of the world who will come together and provide a much more concerted political front in opposing Israel’s ambitions. Their measures that follow will be far more influential than radical, Islamic fundamentalists strapping themselves in with bombs. Muslims in the US can potentially influence and shape US foreign policy as much as Jews and Zionists. Once the US is no longer opposing UN sanctions against Israel, there will be a retribution Israel must finally payback. There’s a shame Israelis will one day have to acknowledge, much like the Germans who learned of the atrocities committed by Hitler. Israel’s sixty years of ethnic cleansing will finally come to an end. Solutions to a world crisis are found in the hearts of men and women who seek peace, not by men with evil, self-serving and distorted principles that can guide our leaders instead. LBJ escalating the war in Vietnam once JFK was assassinated, VP Bush Sr, under the Reagan Administration, complicit in Contra cocaine smuggling into the US by the tons and Bush Jr, McCain and Cheney prompting Americans to attack Iraq soon after 9/11 are leaders misguided by a mutated geopolitical philosophy that always leads to death, suffering and destruction. For a final note, heed the words written by one of the most decorated soldiers in American military history and highly honored during his military career. Brigadier General Smedley Butler was awarded two Congressional Medals of Honor in his earlier years as a tough Marine soldier. When he retired he wrote a book, “War is a Racket.” Another soldier once held the second highest rank in the Israeli military, Major General Matti Peled and was also well respected and honored. Read the story of Matti Peled’s journey from a man of war to a man of peace, in his son’s book, “The General’s son” by Miko Peled for another look at what’s indeed fundamentally wrong in present day Israel that’s also wrong for hundreds of millions of non-Zionist Americans.

Excellent. Makes a LOT of things, both recently and historically political much, much more clear. I am left thinking it's not so much a "religion" as a tool for ethnic advancement.

A book worth reading to put into perspective what is happening today in the world. The author courageously digs into history, analysing literally The Weight of Three Thousand Years. He brings clarity amidst so much pathological persistence throughout history and is not afraid of stating the truth. As the author states, "Although the struggle against antisemitism (and of all other forms of racism) should never cease, the struggle against Jewish chauvinism and exclusivism, which must include a critique of classical Judaism, is now of equal or greater importance."

Zionism isn't the corruption of Judaism -- it's the logical extension of Judaism. Read this book and find out why Jewish ideology is driving the genocide of the non-Jews (Palestinians).

I am grateful that I don't have to read Talmud in order what drives these delusional "chosen people ". Also, the book written by an Israeli Jew lends trustworthiness to this horrifying account

Israel Shahak has written a long needed and balanced review of some of the teachings of the Talmud and the rabbis. His research and understanding of the subject is clear from the first pages. This work is by no means a comprehensive study of the subject matter, but it does give a generally good understanding of some of the teachings of rabbinic Judaism.Israel Shahak has not sugar coated the racist teachings of the Talmud, but neither has he exaggerated them.it is easy to read and understand. If you are looking for a book to give you a beginners understanding of what the rabbis believe and teach, then this book is a good place to start.

Jewish history and the customs and attitudes of 'classical' Judaism are little studied or understood by most educated non-Jews. This book provides a useful introduction.

Review

“Hunt, Gather, Cook is a fabulous resource for anyone who wants to take more control over the food they eat and have more fun doing so. It’s a complete reference on foraging, fishing, and hunting, with great recipes by a writer, outdoorsman, and cook with enormous passion.” —Michael Ruhlman, author of Charcuterie and Ratio: The Simple Codes Behind the Craft of Everyday Cooking“Going to be stranded on an island and can bring only one item? Bring Hank with you! And if you can’t, then absolutely bring Hunt, Gather, Cook. That will ensure not only your survival but your survival with style and good gastronomy!” —Ariane Daguin, founder of specialty meat purveyor D’Artagnan“In Hunt, Gather, Cook, [Shaw] makes a powerful argument for joining him in a few of those pursuits, if only to become aware of the great bounty that surrounds us in the natural world, even when we live in urban environments--and perhaps particularly then.” —The New York Times“Most of us walk through our world and see water and land. Shaw sees a buffet ripe for the taking.” —Tampa Tribune“More than a cookbook, though there are plenty of recipes, and more than a memoir, though the book is filled with personal stories, Hunt, Gather, Cook is an introduction to a different way of ‘doing' food.” —SimplyRecipes.com“From recipes for homemade root beer and wild duck ragu to finding and picking nettles, the book is a paean to eating wild.” —Garden & Gun“A deftly narrated story that has us considering doing a little more foraging, fishing, and sure, maybe even hunting, so that we can have an excuse to buy a salami fridge, too.” —LAWeekly.com

First, I don't understand the rants from reviewers who complain that having no color photos of mushrooms in a book about foraging is dangerous. Hank doesn't write about foraging for mushrooms in this book. So, read the book before ranting. Also, it is an introductory book that encourages you to do more specialized research. Honestly, a simple Google search will inundate you with pictures of every possible plant, dangerous and harmless, that would will encounter foraging. Having said that, I would happily pay more for color photos if there is an expanded new edition in the future. They would just be more fun.Second, this is a book for people who are completely new to hunting, fishing, and foraging. That describes most people in America these days. Hunting and fishing are dying skills in this country. Foraging is pretty much for Boy Scouts and eccentrics as far as most people are concerned. This is tragic. Hank is trying to make these arts (yes, they are arts) accessible and appealing to a new crowd. This book combines a good basic overview of different types of hunting and fishing with what a newbie needs to know before getting started in each one, and goes on to describe what to do with the animal once it is caught, Just as importantly, Hank gives the beginner a feeling for why the prospective hunter would want to start on this tough, expensive, and exciting challenge. He also urges the beginner forward to more advanced research and to concrete steps in order to become a real hunter, fisher, or forager. Highly recommended as an introductory book.

At a certain point many foragers grow hungry for bounty beyond mushrooms and cattails. They seek meat - raw and wild - yet making the leap from acorn gatherer to elk killer is a daunting one that seems beyond grasp. Hank Shaw's Hunt, Gather, Cook: Finding the Forgotten Feast narrows that gap with an entertaining, informative and approachable perspective on all forms of wild dining.Hank Shaw is a true renaissance eater. Educated, well versed in ethics, smart in his approaches to gaining new skills and knowledge, yet rooted in his father's passion for the outdoors. I do not view him as the modern Grizzly Adams as others have, because I believe that diminishes the bridge that he provides to so many seeking the big step into a full table approach to wild foods. At 336 pages with sparse photos and just a sprinkling of recipes, Shaw is more focused on a mid-range canvassing of everything one would need to know to forage plants as well as fish and hunt. Whereas Connie Green's Wild Table is all about the recipes, Shaw is about the how-to. How to find the stinging nettles. How to select the gun you need to kill a deer. How to process an animal in the field. Too much for some possibly, but enough for anyone on this journey to get far enough along that you have the confidence to take the next step. The book is comprised of three sections: Foraging from coast to coast; Fishing and feasting from streams to the sea; and Hunting for food and fulfillment. Green's book focused in on California and Pacific Northwest flora, but Shaw features a more universal selection - wild greens, berries, acorns, and then present relatively easy recipes that are a step above the 70s Love Child recipes that have driven many from wild bounty. The fishing section starts with the ethics and rational for fishing and moves into shellfish, crabbing and a variety of the more common fresh and salt water fish and how to prepare them. He covers how to clean the fish and turn them into dishes such as Sicilian Grilled Fish with Oregano Oil.The hunting section is the most intricate in the book in terms of his personal ethic and journey. If you weren't raised hunting, the odds of you ever hunting are minuscule at best. But Shaw breaks down those barriers with his personal story of an adult learning to hunt. He walks the reader step-by-step on selecting the weapon, practicing and getting licensed. As a result of his book I am currently in the process of learning to hunt in hopes of actually hitting the mountains next season with confidence that I can humanely kill an animal and efficiently turn that animal into food. Naturally, deer take center stage because of their prolific nature all over the world, but Shaw also covers moose, elk, quail, rabbit and more. Swedish moose meatballs, wild boar sausage and pheasant salad with fennel are just a few of Shaw's recipes.Shaw is a bridge building for the non-indoctrinated. After reading Hunt, Gather, Cook, you will have the confidence to step out and find your wild meal, and will be able to do it ethically, efficiently and with fun - a wonderful guide on a wild foodies journey.

This is, in MHO, a fairly nicely written book that, at once, maintains one's interest and is an easy read; HOWEVER, ALL the photographs contained therein are in black and white. ALL. One-hundred percent ( 100 % ). Without a colour photograph, illustration or plate to be found. This, in a book that virtually relies on one's colour vision to make the right choice while gathering or risk becoming ill, or worse. The author and publishing company missed the boat by about a lightyear; what could have been a reference book is thereby reduced to a virtual paperweight. If this book is reprinted with colour illustrations and photographs it will be a must have; as of now, it will make about average-to- good kindling. Two stars until the aforementioned problem is corrected.

Do not buy the paperback version of this! The inside pages are all black & white- and what should be beautiful, enticing photos of delicious wild food recipes are rendered useless by the lack of color printing. I'm annoyed that trees were felled to make the paper to print this. I sent it back on principle. However, based on what I did see, I will be purchasing the hardcover version right away. I think the author did a beautiful job on this book, I'm just not sure what the publisher was thinking allowing it to be printed in B&W.

I loved this outstanding book by Caitlin Atkinson, who both wrote and photographed this book. I recommend it to anyone who loves plants and crafts. There are 30 craft projects and over 250 pages. Each highly original craft is beautifully photographed first as a full page and then photographed step-by-step with very clear instructions. The crafts bring nature into your home in a uniquely creative way. There are lots of great craft ideas that are actually simple and doable.I’ve already tried my hand at the Living Wreath on page 184 and both my husband and I really love it. It was lots of fun to make and now I have a lovely wreath to use year round.

So many lovely creative projects! Can't wait to start on some of these. Nicely thought out book front to back.

Inspired ideas: this is a fantastic volume!

Great book

Very unusual ideas that I had not seen before!

Not useful for me. May be able to gift it to someone who is more into this type of craft.

I enjoyed this book very much since it combined two of my favorite things...plants and crafts. The first part of the book gives information on the types of plants that work best for these projects, and advice on how to best care for them, while the rest gives detailed instructions for creating 30 different projects incorporating plants and other materials.Usually, when I buy a book like this, I feel I've gotten my money's worth if I like 50% of the projects enough to consider making them. This seems reasonable as tastes differ. So I was surprised and delighted to find that I liked about 90% of the projects in this book. That's not to say that I'll make them all, but they are all things I'd love to have in my house. The instructions for each project are well organized and supported with numerous photos. There are descriptions, with photos, of what tools and supplies you will need, as well as step by step instructions for creating each project. I'm a bit tool-challenged, and not all that crafty, so seeing all this detailed information really gave me confidence that I could actually create these beautiful things. The layout of this book is exceptionally well thought out. The photos were lovely and the layout on each page was a pleasure to view. I found it enjoyable just to look through it. I was very impressed with this book and highly recommend it.Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

All projects are highly original and the final articles are striking. They include a Planted Chandelier, a Threaded Leaf Wreath, a Living Diorama, a Water Sculpture Garden, a Lava Rock Bonsai, a Tillandsia Nest, a Lush Vertical Garden, a Staghorn Fern Shadow Box etc. Each project details materials and tools needed with clear and easy to follow step-by-step written instructions for completion of them. There is a clear photograph accompanying every step. This book is filled with stunning photos of both the finished projects and the step-by-step process to getting there. Not surprising really when it is known that the author is a photographer by trade! As well as the plants and botanicals, materials needed for the projects include wood, glass, clay, dry concrete mix, sand, gravel, florist wire and many more. A variety of DIY and gardening tools are also required. There is a detailed section on plants for the home, together with information about the use and care of them. Many thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book. I have written a voluntary honest review. Unfortunately, this book is not what I thought it was going to be. I was hoping that I could do a number of these projects with some of the students that I teach, but I believe that the vast majority of these will be too challenging for them. For this reason, this review is based with a more appropriate target audience in mind - all the budding artistic/creative gardener and DIY enthusiasts.

Review

These essays...offer new socially relevant insights into familiar works of antiquity [and] offer challening directions for continued research using precision studies of garment construction, fibers and fabrics, and, especially, their meanings in social contexts. (B.B. Chico Choice)Highly recommended.' (B B Chico Choice, 2006)This publication will be of interest to textile conservationists, archaeologists, classicists, art historians, theatrical costume designers, and re-enactment enthusiasts. (Maureen Alden Costume)The book will be especially useful to scholars specialising in gender studies, fabric manufacture, and the social importance and interpretation of clothes. However, anyone with a general interest in these areas and a healthy sense of curiosity will learn something from every chapter.' (Fiona Greenland Ancient West & East, Vol 7, 2008)

Deep wisdom to guide our becoming an elder. So needed! Anyone can grow old if you live long enough but it takes effort and introspection to harvest the lessons of a lifetime and become a wise older member of society, which used to be a respected role - a sage.. This book will lay out that path.I've read several books on this subject and this is by far the best. It's written from a Jewish perspective but relevant and accessible to everyone, all backgrounds and not in the least a heavy religious book. No proselytizing about the "best way". Practical, applicable, easy and even fun to read and should be read by anyone who is seeking a template to enter older age and grow wise from the experience of living.

With wisdom and clarity, Rabbi Rachel Cown and Dr. Linda Thall will help you explore the challenges of aging and the joy of the exploration. Not only are there moving stories to read and questions to ponder, but if you are reading this with a group, there are exercises which enable closer connections with your fellow travelers, which itself is a pathway to peace, acceptance, and gratitude. It is never too late to learn, and perhaps this stage of life offers its sweetest opportunities. Grab the book, sit down with a cup of tea, and begin!

The book leads the reader through the mindful journey of aging. Wonderful stories or reflection. The right book at the right time of life

I was part of a group that use the book. Our rabbi conducted a monthly meeting and we reviewed all the chapters one at a time. The book was the basis for the discussion and we are still meeting. The book was a wonderful guide and we found it very helpful. I have recommended the book to interested people.

This is a great book for people who want to approach aging with wisdom and compassion. Included in the book are numerous quotes and references. There are also thought provoking journal prompts. I am choosing to read the book and then go back and do the journaling. I would recommend this book.

Considerate and great for even young, old people ;^P Would be good to use as a "workbook" for a group of people interested in aging and supporting each other in self-discovery and growth.

This is a must read for all of us over the age of sixty. Tremendous inside of what is needed to make our lives more fuller and meaningful

excellent

This is my fifth book in the Velo series and I read and noted the places of interest Steven and Anna travelled. My husband and I are planning to travel the same route along the Danube from Passau to Budapest. Obviously not nearly as brave and adventurous to travel as far and wide. I loved all of these books and they have inspired me. Steven writes with a true Aussie spirit of mischief and adventure. However I miss the critiques at the end of each stop over with his score for food and dining please add these into any future books.

I like his attitude. Being an Australian I expected boasting....Nothing. He pokes fun at them. Tells the story as it happens. I have learned a lot. And would definitely read more of his books. BTW I would probably plan to ride in The Netherlands as my first touring trip before attempting other. Got to start somewhere.

Like all of Steven's previous cycling books, it feels like I'm riding each with them experiencing the highs and lows. Norway has been on my list for some time and this has enspired me to research more for our next European holiday. Highly recommend all of Steven's cycling books, even if you are not a cyclist. The books are inspirational and I really enjoy his humour and views on cycling, overly touristy places and slow adventures.

A highly enjoyable read. Herrick writes with humour and affection about the people he meets and the countryside through which he travels. The pace is leisurely and the emphasis is on slow food and quiet back roads. This book is great for the armchair traveller and food lover, but will also encourage we cyclists to stretch our legs and embark on a more distant adventure.

This is a good read, quite entertaining. It's not a technical guide but a travel/adventure book. It has inspired me to get on my bike with the minimum of supplies and hit the road! You will enjoy this!

Well written, an interesting read. I just wish it included amount of their route.

This is about as boring as a travel log can get. It is as exciting to read as watching grass grow.

In this book we join Steven, his wife Cathie and their two bikes on what is now their annual cycling holiday to Europe. I have been following them in spirit over the years from Steven’s first trip baguettes and bicycles: a cycling adventure across France (Eurovelo Series Book 1) where he cycled from St Nazaire on the west coast of France following the Loire Valley and the Saone River east. His writing never fails to make me smile and wish I too were joining in their fun.In this latest trip (of epic proportions) Steven and Cathie start in Marseille on the French Mediterranean coast and head north, a long way north, to the fjords of Norway. This was a 4000 km trip that many would balk at attempting in a car and included some extremely horrid weather, battering winds, freezing fingers, serious hills, mountain tunnels but also stunning scenery, breathtaking views and lots of the all important refreshment stops.Sometimes their itineraries seemed to verge on total madness, like the day Steven decided to detour up Mont Ventoux, just to cycle back down again, despite the weather being bitterly cold, wet, icy and very windy. The long, dark mountain tunnels shared with lorries didn’t sound much more appealing, but their sense of adventure and Steven’s descriptions of the many stunning sights they saw kept me page turning. Their accommodation varied from self-catering, small hotels, Airbnb private rooms and even included a Christian retreat centre, and as you would expect from a month on the road, some were good, some less so. Some of their hosts (especially in France) really went the extra mile to ensure these two nutty cyclists had everything they needed during their stay.As a cyclist I know how important food is to fuel you on a bike ride and Steven and Cathie never missed an opportunity to indulge in a slice of cake, a patisserie or a three-course meal and every mouthful is generously shared with the reader. In fact I would go as far as to say their food experiences were just as important as their cycling ones and certainly left me feeling hungry. If you can’t visit Europe by bike, this book will certainly whet your appetite for the slower paced travel and may even persuade you to get out and cycle a bit too. He certainly gave me itchy bike wheels!I was sent a copy of this book for an honest review.
