'Bel Canto', the title of this novel, means 'beautiful singing' and this book truly sings. It is a lovely story packed with magical realism and focuses on a botched kidnapping in a third world country. The kidnappers are amateur guerrillas who had hoped to capture the president of the nation as a prisoner, only to find that he was not present at the party they crashed by coming out of the air vents. The party was a birthday celebration for a renown Japanese businessman named Katsumi Hosokawa, and present was the vice president of the country, only a figurehead, and an internationally famous soprano named Roxanne Coss. What starts off as a horrific situation of prisoners versus captors turns into something entirely different.Roxanne has the voice of an angel, one that turns men and women's hearts and souls toward her. She is beloved by many. "Even those who saw her for the first time, before she had opened her mouth to sing, found her radiant." She had been brought to what she calls "this dismal jungle" to sing for Mr. Hosakawa in celebration of his 53rd birthday. Mr. Hosakawa has loved opera since his youth and is in awe of Roxanne. Her singing brings forth emotions from inside him that he was never aware he even had. A new world opens up for him.The guerrillas release all the women except Roxanne, while the men remain prisoners. The captors are a bunch of amateurs, mostly young, but all holding rifles. As the captives and captors begin to interact during the hostage situation, the real beauty of this novel comes into play. People befriend one another, others fall in love,a routine develops and music fills the atmosphere. Captors and captives alike are sympathetic characters and I was only fearful of the tragedy that I felt would ensue at some point. How, I thought, could this end well? The country where this situation occurs is never named in the novel but it is reminiscent of the Japanese Embassy Hostage Crisis that occurred in Lima, Peru in 1996. This book has been adapted into an opera and the movie rights were recently sold and the stars will be Julianne Moore and Ken Watanabe. If you love literary fiction with eccentric and well-developed characters, this is a must-read. If you love music, you are in for a treat that will knock you socks off.

I was looking at books in a library when I came across this book. I read the description on the cover and decided to give it a try. When I started on it, it was so good I could not put it down. I don't know much about operas nor have I ever attended one but since the main heroine in the story is a soprano and there are talks about parts of operas, I listened and watched the mentioned operas on YouTube and fell in love with operas. Although the story happens in a single house, it is filled with descriptions of personalities that are amazing. The book was so great that I ordered two copies for my children. I also bought "Opera 101" book by "Fred Plotkin" next to learn more about operas.

Ann Patchett's Bel Canto is one her most famous and touted works. It is the story about a Birthday party for a South American Diplomat that brings together many close friends, family members and professional colleagues to enjoy a seated dinner and the luxury of a professional opera singer to provide entertainment. The drama unfolds in a hotel ballroom in Buenos Aries, when the party has scarcely even started and a local guerrilla terrorist group who are politically against the host of the Birthday party invade the ballroom when the lights go down and the opera singer is getting warmed up. I can't say for sure if it is has a happy ending, but one gets the feeling that Ann Patchett knows what she is doing while the tale of the hostage situation gains momentum and personal relationships amongst the hostages develop and become personal. It's a very different type of story and belongs to the literature genre. The tense is third person omniscient and as the point of view shifts from character to character, reader builds trust with narrator.

I love Ann Patchett! I am amazed that she can write about so many different topics and genres and yet it feels all so organic for her.I enjoyed the interview with her about the writing of Bel Canto at the end of my kindle version. It gave me more insight into her thoughts about it. The reason I'm not giving five stars is because, after investing so much time in these characters, the ending is just too abrupt for my taste. I knew it would be difficult to end this story and I was wondering how she was going to do it but.. it was disappointing. The epilogue helped a little but not much...

If all you do is read the plot summary of this book—in an unnamed South American country, terrorists storm the birthday party of a Japanese electronics executive in a botched attempt to kidnapped that country's president—you would never know that this exceptional book by Ann Patchett is actually about friendship and love.Katsumi Hosokawa is turning 53, not a particularly notable birthday, and in a bald faced attempt to entice him to build a factory in this backwater country, the government throws him a lavish birthday party at the opulent home of the vice president. The only reason Hosokawa agrees to attend is that the evening's entertainment is his favorite opera singer, the world-renowned Roxane Coss. But terror and fear reign when armed gunmen storm the house and take hostage well over 100 people from a myriad of countries, who speak a myriad of languages. The standoff lasts for months, and during that time the hostages and their captors eventually form what could be described as a near utopia.Magnificently written with vividly drawn characters, this book is pure genius. The prose is so breathtaking in spots that it is almost poetic, while the storytelling—told individually from many characters' point of view—is absolutely superb. This book is a real treasure.Bonus: The epilogue qualifies as a surprise ending—but one that also makes total sense.

I am taking medical billing and coding and the medical terminology wasn't covered very well in the course. I found it more confusing then anything. I purchased this book and I have made my way through 2 chapters now and wow I am remembering this. I wouldn't get this book for a full course on medical terminology as it is just a basic, quick overview. The body systems are just a couple of pages in the appendix of the book and not really focused on much. Overall, this book has helped medical terminology understandable.

I have the Kindle version of this book and I can't see part of the page. This is like this for every page. Its cut off on the right side.I have it zoomed out as far as it will go and the page columns as narrow as possible. Not sure if it's the apps fault or the e-book itself, but I need this fixed!

I like that you can write in this book like a workbook. I thought it was going to be something like a dictionary but it’s not. Through every chapter most of the terms are repeated for extra exposure. I passed my med term class with a 98 because of this book.

Clear and concise information and with interesting stories.

Great price, helpful book for class.

I REALLY NEED IT & THANKS

Perfect

I ended up receiving a book from a friend but I did notice how clean and nice this book was.

Constellations: A Play, by Nick Payne

Review

“Who knew that higher physics could be so sexy, so accessible--and so emotionally devastating? Constellations, Nick Payne's gorgeous two-character drama, starring a perfectly matched Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson, may be the most sophisticated date play Broadway has seen.” ―Ben Brantley, The New York Times“The play may fixate on physics, but the chemistry between the two leads is potent enough to move an audience to tears.” ―Alexis Soloski, The Guardian“The pleasure of the evening lies in the way it is both eminently sensible and completely nonsensical. Details accumulate sufficiently to explain character and plot, while throwing us so off-guard as to make questions of narrative moot . . . Wilson and Gyllenhaal are tasked with showing us how the slightest shift in emphasis can alter a line's meaning. Wilson has the more commanding stage technique while the approach of Gyllenhaal is more halting and affectionate. Their chemistry is palpable.” ―Brendan Lemon, Financial Times“Short and sweet and strangely haunting . . . Although barely an hour long, this baby bombshell by hot Brit scribe Nick Payne overflows with emotional highs and lows . . . By the end of the play (has it really been only an hour?), we're fully invested in [the characters'] lives. All of them.” ―Marilyn Stasio, Variety“Rarely has quantum physics felt as romantic, as lively as it does in Broadway's Constellations.” ―Elisabeth Vincentelli, New York Post“British playwright Nick Payne's beguiling Constellations is not only a full-bodied narrative, it's a richly affecting experience. That's thanks to the sensitivity of the writing, but also to the warmth, humor and vitality invested in it by Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson, giving two astonishing performances in a production from Michael Longhurst that's as rigorous as it is tender.” ―David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter“We've been down similar roads before in pop culture, with Groundhog Day being the classic version. But Payne puts his own stamp on the idea -- and director Michael Longhurst's staging touches both the head and the heart deeply. Even Tom Scutt's lovely set, a bare stage below and beside a huge collection of inflated white balloons, packs a poetic touch. And the cast is swoon-worthy. Gyllenhaal is laid-back and ever-genuine as the passive Roland. Wilson, a two-time Olivier Award winner, is sensual and irresistibly carefree -- a perfect foil. Together, they have something elusive: combustible chemistry. Heavenly sparks ensue.” ―Joe Dziemianowicz, New York Daily News“Constellations is smart but not dry; its focus is on the personal and emotional, and Gyllenhaal and Wilson reboot themselves convincingly at every stutter and turn. They're wonderfully multiversatile.” ―Adam Feldman, Time Out New York“Despite abrupt scene and mood fluctuations, Gyllenhaal and Wilson perform the tricky repetitions and time shifts with breathtaking smoothness. Wilson expressively signals Marianne's emotions, whether glee or mischief or heartbreaking vulnerability. Gyllenhaal's performance is more opaque, yet he infuses Roland with decency and an earnest desire to communicate with the better-educated, more emotional Marianne.” ―Jennifer Farrar, Associated Press“Intimate and cosmic concerns are woven together with such grace that they seem inextricable.” ―Elysa Gardner, USA Today“The actors give true tour-de-force performances ... Wilson, a two-time Olivier award-winner honored on Sunday as best actress in a TV series, duels and parries with her partner to memorable effect, whether she's a sloppily emotional figure out on a first date, or an academic methodically enchanted by the mysteries of the universe.” ―Robert Kahn, NBC“[Nick Payne is] one of the most dazzlingly gifted dramatists of a new generation--sharp, funny, wise, humane.” ―Vogue“The nearest I've come across in ages to a play that feels heaven-sent.” ―Matt Wolf, The New York Times“Constellations gets into your head and under your skin with an immediacy that sometimes tickles and often hurts.” ―Ben Brantley, The New York Times“Spry, funny and ultimately very moving . . . A touchingly original study of a relationship and a meditation on that all too familiar refrain: ‘if only.'” ―Sarah Hemming, Financial Times“Wondrously supple . . . The trick the playwright pulls off is to bring a feather-light touch to weighty themes.” ―Maxie Szalwinska, The Sunday Times“Beautiful and brilliant . . . Seldom has a play felt so exhilarating.” ―Georgina Brown, Mail on Sunday“The phrase ‘emotionally satisfying' is rarely seen alongside that of ‘experimental drama'--which makes Nick Payne's arresting, intelligent new play Constellations all the more exciting.” ―David Benedict, Variety“I do know the real thing when I see it. And Nick Payne, a playwright previously unknown to me, is at the beginning of a great career.” ―John Lahr, The New Yorker“Payne is undoubtedly one of the brightest sparks in our playwriting landscape.” ―Fiona Mountford, London Evening Standard“I know it's only January, but if I see a more ingenious, touching and intellectually searching play than Constellations this year, I will count myself very lucky.” ―Charles Spencer, The Daily Telegraph“Not since Mike Bartlett's Cock, so to speak, have I been so exhilarated by a new play . . . Extraordinary.” ―Paul Taylor, The Independent

This play truly was something special. If you've ever read or seen "Sure Thing" by David Ives, this runs right down a similar path. However, this is a full-length play... at least it's longer than "Sure Thing." It is grounded in reality which allows each individual scenario to be believable in its own right.I laughed out loud and I felt my heartstrings being plucked by cruel realities and unfortunate timing.*MINOR SPOILER**While this is a celebration of the idea of alternate realities, it deals with the idea that we as humans actually do not have any control over the big picture. Everything will always fall as it always was going to fall. The constellations in the sky are always the same. You can't change the destination, so why not change the journey? Decide what you can, and let fate decide the rest.

Saw this a few weeks ago with Jake Gyllenhall and Ruth Wilson and just loved it! It is David Ives' All in the Timing with a British accent. It is funny; it is sad; it is imaginative. It is all of the things most new plays aren't. As with Logan's Red this play will be done all over America and at 70 minutes long with only two actors it is going to be a young actors' dream roll. Buy it and enjoy the wonderful twists of language. You will not be disappointed.

A key element of this play is that some lines are repeated in different circumstances, with different tones and emphases--thus, would read this script only if you're an actor, otherwise would recommend watching it live.

It's the standard tale of boy meets girl but with a completely original, inventive, and powerful take. Payne does an amazing thing with these characters and doesn't dumb anything down for his readers/audience. I highly recommend reading it, or even better, seeing a production of it if you can!

I saw the play in Portland, OR with my fiance and absolutely loved the wittiness and concept of the play. Being both science people, sci-fi fans, and nature lovers, the concept of parallel universes intertwining with basic yet still complex life of a beekeeper gave us both chills. Since we ended up getting engaged after the second time we saw this show, I had to get it for our book collection

This was a stunning way to explore the intersecting lives of two people. A friend who saw it on stage said it was excellent.

Multiverse! Delightful, deliciously short. Engaging, witty, and believe it or not, suspenseful. Recommended for intelligent open minded audience. Wish I could see this performed.

I saw the play in Broadway liked a lot. The story is simple warm like everybody's life. Looking forward to more of Payne's work
