Review

“Hunt, Gather, Cook is a fabulous resource for anyone who wants to take more control over the food they eat and have more fun doing so. It’s a complete reference on foraging, fishing, and hunting, with great recipes by a writer, outdoorsman, and cook with enormous passion.” —Michael Ruhlman, author of Charcuterie and Ratio: The Simple Codes Behind the Craft of Everyday Cooking“Going to be stranded on an island and can bring only one item? Bring Hank with you! And if you can’t, then absolutely bring Hunt, Gather, Cook. That will ensure not only your survival but your survival with style and good gastronomy!” —Ariane Daguin, founder of specialty meat purveyor D’Artagnan“In Hunt, Gather, Cook, [Shaw] makes a powerful argument for joining him in a few of those pursuits, if only to become aware of the great bounty that surrounds us in the natural world, even when we live in urban environments--and perhaps particularly then.” —The New York Times“Most of us walk through our world and see water and land. Shaw sees a buffet ripe for the taking.” —Tampa Tribune“More than a cookbook, though there are plenty of recipes, and more than a memoir, though the book is filled with personal stories, Hunt, Gather, Cook is an introduction to a different way of ‘doing' food.” —SimplyRecipes.com“From recipes for homemade root beer and wild duck ragu to finding and picking nettles, the book is a paean to eating wild.” —Garden & Gun“A deftly narrated story that has us considering doing a little more foraging, fishing, and sure, maybe even hunting, so that we can have an excuse to buy a salami fridge, too.” —LAWeekly.com

First, I don't understand the rants from reviewers who complain that having no color photos of mushrooms in a book about foraging is dangerous. Hank doesn't write about foraging for mushrooms in this book. So, read the book before ranting. Also, it is an introductory book that encourages you to do more specialized research. Honestly, a simple Google search will inundate you with pictures of every possible plant, dangerous and harmless, that would will encounter foraging. Having said that, I would happily pay more for color photos if there is an expanded new edition in the future. They would just be more fun.Second, this is a book for people who are completely new to hunting, fishing, and foraging. That describes most people in America these days. Hunting and fishing are dying skills in this country. Foraging is pretty much for Boy Scouts and eccentrics as far as most people are concerned. This is tragic. Hank is trying to make these arts (yes, they are arts) accessible and appealing to a new crowd. This book combines a good basic overview of different types of hunting and fishing with what a newbie needs to know before getting started in each one, and goes on to describe what to do with the animal once it is caught, Just as importantly, Hank gives the beginner a feeling for why the prospective hunter would want to start on this tough, expensive, and exciting challenge. He also urges the beginner forward to more advanced research and to concrete steps in order to become a real hunter, fisher, or forager. Highly recommended as an introductory book.

At a certain point many foragers grow hungry for bounty beyond mushrooms and cattails. They seek meat - raw and wild - yet making the leap from acorn gatherer to elk killer is a daunting one that seems beyond grasp. Hank Shaw's Hunt, Gather, Cook: Finding the Forgotten Feast narrows that gap with an entertaining, informative and approachable perspective on all forms of wild dining.Hank Shaw is a true renaissance eater. Educated, well versed in ethics, smart in his approaches to gaining new skills and knowledge, yet rooted in his father's passion for the outdoors. I do not view him as the modern Grizzly Adams as others have, because I believe that diminishes the bridge that he provides to so many seeking the big step into a full table approach to wild foods. At 336 pages with sparse photos and just a sprinkling of recipes, Shaw is more focused on a mid-range canvassing of everything one would need to know to forage plants as well as fish and hunt. Whereas Connie Green's Wild Table is all about the recipes, Shaw is about the how-to. How to find the stinging nettles. How to select the gun you need to kill a deer. How to process an animal in the field. Too much for some possibly, but enough for anyone on this journey to get far enough along that you have the confidence to take the next step. The book is comprised of three sections: Foraging from coast to coast; Fishing and feasting from streams to the sea; and Hunting for food and fulfillment. Green's book focused in on California and Pacific Northwest flora, but Shaw features a more universal selection - wild greens, berries, acorns, and then present relatively easy recipes that are a step above the 70s Love Child recipes that have driven many from wild bounty. The fishing section starts with the ethics and rational for fishing and moves into shellfish, crabbing and a variety of the more common fresh and salt water fish and how to prepare them. He covers how to clean the fish and turn them into dishes such as Sicilian Grilled Fish with Oregano Oil.The hunting section is the most intricate in the book in terms of his personal ethic and journey. If you weren't raised hunting, the odds of you ever hunting are minuscule at best. But Shaw breaks down those barriers with his personal story of an adult learning to hunt. He walks the reader step-by-step on selecting the weapon, practicing and getting licensed. As a result of his book I am currently in the process of learning to hunt in hopes of actually hitting the mountains next season with confidence that I can humanely kill an animal and efficiently turn that animal into food. Naturally, deer take center stage because of their prolific nature all over the world, but Shaw also covers moose, elk, quail, rabbit and more. Swedish moose meatballs, wild boar sausage and pheasant salad with fennel are just a few of Shaw's recipes.Shaw is a bridge building for the non-indoctrinated. After reading Hunt, Gather, Cook, you will have the confidence to step out and find your wild meal, and will be able to do it ethically, efficiently and with fun - a wonderful guide on a wild foodies journey.

This is, in MHO, a fairly nicely written book that, at once, maintains one's interest and is an easy read; HOWEVER, ALL the photographs contained therein are in black and white. ALL. One-hundred percent ( 100 % ). Without a colour photograph, illustration or plate to be found. This, in a book that virtually relies on one's colour vision to make the right choice while gathering or risk becoming ill, or worse. The author and publishing company missed the boat by about a lightyear; what could have been a reference book is thereby reduced to a virtual paperweight. If this book is reprinted with colour illustrations and photographs it will be a must have; as of now, it will make about average-to- good kindling. Two stars until the aforementioned problem is corrected.

Do not buy the paperback version of this! The inside pages are all black & white- and what should be beautiful, enticing photos of delicious wild food recipes are rendered useless by the lack of color printing. I'm annoyed that trees were felled to make the paper to print this. I sent it back on principle. However, based on what I did see, I will be purchasing the hardcover version right away. I think the author did a beautiful job on this book, I'm just not sure what the publisher was thinking allowing it to be printed in B&W.

I loved this outstanding book by Caitlin Atkinson, who both wrote and photographed this book. I recommend it to anyone who loves plants and crafts. There are 30 craft projects and over 250 pages. Each highly original craft is beautifully photographed first as a full page and then photographed step-by-step with very clear instructions. The crafts bring nature into your home in a uniquely creative way. There are lots of great craft ideas that are actually simple and doable.I’ve already tried my hand at the Living Wreath on page 184 and both my husband and I really love it. It was lots of fun to make and now I have a lovely wreath to use year round.

So many lovely creative projects! Can't wait to start on some of these. Nicely thought out book front to back.

Inspired ideas: this is a fantastic volume!

Great book

Very unusual ideas that I had not seen before!

Not useful for me. May be able to gift it to someone who is more into this type of craft.

I enjoyed this book very much since it combined two of my favorite things...plants and crafts. The first part of the book gives information on the types of plants that work best for these projects, and advice on how to best care for them, while the rest gives detailed instructions for creating 30 different projects incorporating plants and other materials.Usually, when I buy a book like this, I feel I've gotten my money's worth if I like 50% of the projects enough to consider making them. This seems reasonable as tastes differ. So I was surprised and delighted to find that I liked about 90% of the projects in this book. That's not to say that I'll make them all, but they are all things I'd love to have in my house. The instructions for each project are well organized and supported with numerous photos. There are descriptions, with photos, of what tools and supplies you will need, as well as step by step instructions for creating each project. I'm a bit tool-challenged, and not all that crafty, so seeing all this detailed information really gave me confidence that I could actually create these beautiful things. The layout of this book is exceptionally well thought out. The photos were lovely and the layout on each page was a pleasure to view. I found it enjoyable just to look through it. I was very impressed with this book and highly recommend it.Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

All projects are highly original and the final articles are striking. They include a Planted Chandelier, a Threaded Leaf Wreath, a Living Diorama, a Water Sculpture Garden, a Lava Rock Bonsai, a Tillandsia Nest, a Lush Vertical Garden, a Staghorn Fern Shadow Box etc. Each project details materials and tools needed with clear and easy to follow step-by-step written instructions for completion of them. There is a clear photograph accompanying every step. This book is filled with stunning photos of both the finished projects and the step-by-step process to getting there. Not surprising really when it is known that the author is a photographer by trade! As well as the plants and botanicals, materials needed for the projects include wood, glass, clay, dry concrete mix, sand, gravel, florist wire and many more. A variety of DIY and gardening tools are also required. There is a detailed section on plants for the home, together with information about the use and care of them. Many thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book. I have written a voluntary honest review. Unfortunately, this book is not what I thought it was going to be. I was hoping that I could do a number of these projects with some of the students that I teach, but I believe that the vast majority of these will be too challenging for them. For this reason, this review is based with a more appropriate target audience in mind - all the budding artistic/creative gardener and DIY enthusiasts.
