I found ‘Crescent Moon Over Laos!’ an engaging memoir. Boynter’s memoir is a diary of his trip in Laos. This book is well-written, and he paints vividly what he sees along his way. This travel memoir of a largely unknown country offers the reader glimpses geography, cuisine, and hotels, not to mention tales of an exotic locale, and how he discovers himself along the way. I found the uncertainty of Boynter’s travels to be hauntingly beautiful yet mysterious. This isn’t your ordinary travel memoir! So much is packed into a 17 day sojourn. Humanity at its best and worst! Five stars for sure

Mark Boyter has written an excellent account of his trip to Laos. Filled with vivid description of this largely ancient and unknown country, Boyter shares several compelling incidents, including the story of the corrupt ‘visa officer’, the Spartan ‘luxury hotel’ that he and several companions shared and the surprisingly inexpensive French-influenced cuisine that he dines on for less than $ 3 dollars. Crescent Moon Over Laos is not only a traveler’s fascinating account of an exotic place, it’s an interesting journey of self-discovery.

In Crescent Moon Over Laos, author Mark Boyter’s account of his journey, both physical and spiritual, as he ventures into the newly opened Laos is breathtaking in its descriptive beauty and personal insights. For anyone who loves to travel, this book makes personal connections as many of the travelers’ experiences are universal and familiar such as problems in communication and discomfort as one longs for the amenities of home. For readers who dream of traveling, Boyter makes that dream come alive as he paints enticing pictures with his words and takes readers into the sweltering heat, charming little restaurants, and on crowded bus rides that jar the senses as the engine moves forwards. The characters in the book are memorable and their conversations with the author leave lasting imprints on the heart. Boyter’s personal account took me on a journey of my own spiritual reflections and for that, I am very grateful.

Good book for those who like to travel but not a lot of information about the country itself for those who are looking for that kind of information. For hard-core travelers who have spent a lot of time overseas, much of Mark's insight and experiences will resonate. All in all a good read. I enjoyed reading another fellow traveler's musings as I neared the end of my own two-weeks of travel through Northern Laos. Beautiful country. I am sure that helped add to the pleasure I received from the book. Two thumbs up.

Crescent Moon over Laos was an interesting but somewhat disjointed story of Mark, a man traveling through Laos looking for a reason to justify his being there. It seemed that Mark had an immense quantity of psychological questions that bothered him and not too many satisfying solutions that fulfilled his desire to answer these questions. He seemed to be in constant conflict about being identified as a ‘western foreigner’ or ‘Russian’ when in his opinion he was an entity and nothing more. Throughout the story, Mark would throw out a lot of ‘what if’s’ allowing the reader to draw their own conclusion on what Mark was supposed to do or should have done. Unfortunately Mark was easily duped into buying drinks, not getting answers he wanted and the story ended with Mark still having questions.

Crescent Moon Over Laos, by Mark Boyter, takes the reader to Laos in the early 1990s, a time when that country was just opening its borders to the outside world. The author succeeds in capturing the mindset of travelers who seek the "unspoiled" parts of the globe and has some interesting insights on the question of whether or not such travelers are not actually spoiling the unspoiled by their presence there. A reader interested in the issue of cultural chauvinism will encounter more than a few interesting episodes in the book that provide food for thought.Boyter has a knack for seeing the humanity in people as well as their foibles and the absurdities that result from them. His observations are conveyed in smooth, engaging and easy to read prose. The book is interspersed with anecdotes (often quite personal ones) from the author's life and from experiences in other Asian countries, especially Japan and Nepal, but these only serve to enhance the narrative and underscore the points the writer wants to make. In the end, this story about travels through Laos is very much about a journey through life that many readers will find interesting, easy to relate to and, indeed, to reflect upon.

Excellent travel memoir. Must read if planning a trip to Laos. Even if you are not there is a varied of deep topics covered, and it would be a great read either way.

I had mentioned to my primary care doctor that my wife, son and I had an upcoming trip to Alaska and he highly suggested me reading this book before hand. He had been to Alaska three times and stated that the book really puts the geography, history and past culture as well as current culture in perspective. I can say that by reading the novel, I referenced several places and some of the information that was presented on numerous tours and had a better understanding due to this book. I understand Mr. Michener has a whole line of books written in the same format about many places around the world. I plan on reading more of his work in the future if we plan a trip to a place we have never been to. By writing in a novel form , it made the history of the great state come to life and made it much easier to follow along. The only con would be the books length. I read it on my ipad kindle and actually finished it while on vaction there. While there, we saw the paperback edition on sale at various places and picked up a copy to find out that the book is actually 1100 plus pages long! Having said that, if you enjoy novels and history, don't hesitate. Well worth the price.

For the most part, this is an awe inspiring and very informational account. I consider myself pretty well read and informed, but there were dozens of times I left the book and researched various events, people and places to find out if they were part of the Historical or Fictional part of the story. Most of the time I found them to be true historical facts and was amazed at how closely woven the story was.This book is long. Very long. I strongly recommend that you have a month or two where you will be able to really devote to it. There are so many stories in it that even after setting it down for a week I had to read the last few pages to remind myself where I was. That's not a good or bad thing by itself, just something to consider.The few points I have to make that detracted from the book are:A) There is a fair amount of pure conjecture at the outset regarding prehistoric Alaksa. I almost gave up on it in Chapter 1.B) Many of the vignettes are not resolved. And you don't realize that they are open ended until much later, because he often comes back to stories so you don't think anything of it initially.C) The ending. There isn't one, really. It's like he suddenly decided to stop there. Very disappointing. You feel like you suddenly discovered that this was book X of Y. Except it's not.

The best thing about this book is that it left a permanent imprint in my mind. After reading it I feel that I understand Alaska complicated history and demographics a little better. And it was a surprisingly fun read all along.Like most Michener books, this one is also a mixture of true history and life stories of mostly fictional characters with some real historical figures lurking in the background. Sometimes the adventures of the fictional protagonists were so engaging that I was forgetting a broader historical picture, at the other times the real history and geography become so fascinating that I was forgetting about fictional characters. At the beginning of the book there is a very useful short chapter explaining what is fictional and what is true. In agreement with the historical truth, there is a lot of cruelty and carnage involving both, humans and animals. But there is also a lot of compassion and love.The book spans thousands of years and is 1200 pages long. But it is like a few separate books combined in one, each with separate (or only loosely related) sets of characters. Good thing about it is that if one is not ready for such long reading commitment one can always skip some parts and read about the periods in history which interest one most.The ending is a little anticlimactic because it does not bring reader to the presence. I wish Mr. Berry (who wrote very nice introduction) wrote one short chapter at the end.

This is only my second book by Michener and loved it as much as Hawaii. The books are long and get into a great deal of detail but are so informative and interesting that you don't mind. When it ends you want to know more. Would like to find a book that explained the last half of the 20th and so far into 21st century as clearly as Michener's did. Did the Eskimo and Tlingits get to choose the lifestyle they wanted to lead? Which governors did the right thing for their state? This is the third Michener book in a row I read adn I am not much of a reader. His research is incredibly detailed and his writing style is compelling. His books are about 1000 pages long - intimidating for me - but after reading Chesapeake and Hawaii, I am hooked on Michener. I am taking a break with another book right now, but will likely read Michener's Tales of the South Pacific in the future.

This is a huge book and I am only about 1/3 the way through. I am loving it! I made a point of starting this "historic" work while on a cruise to Alaska in June 2018. The trip and the book both illuminated each other. But apart from the cruise, this is yet another Michener masterpiece. You get drawn into the characters and their stories; and the extraordinary way Alaska was bought from Russia and slowly became a state. The momentum of the book keeps you ever wanting to know more. Michener's literary style is deceptively simple - which makes for readability - while also being well researched. He challenges my vocabulary from time to time, which I love. Who cannot revel in a word like "persiflage" and not determine to make it part of daily speech?I not only want to finish this book; I want to go back to Alaska!I've added an image of the Russian Orthodox cathedral in Sitka as it is now. The onion shaped dome is just visible on the left.

I liked the story, but felt it really lacked in building a relationship between two strangers. One of which came from an abusive situation. I would have liked a bit more focus on the new relationship with the hurdles of trust building and falling in love.

If you own a truck like this , it has a lot of good pictures and history

Great book with alot of detailed factory information. The author did his homework and is very knowledgeable on this subject.

I was hoping to receive an assembly manual since the book had Restorer's Guide in the title, but it had very little information about how to restore the truck. It did have interesting information about the truck itself.

If you are restoring one of these old trucks this book has alot of factory accurate photos and descriptions. It is however mainly concerned with asthetics; interior, exterior, bed variations. If you want to know what the interior looked like when your truck was original or what the paint should be on the nose this is the book for you. It should be noted that all the photos are black and white, accompanied by detailed description. If you need to know how to rebuild the drive train this book will get you nowhere.

On the whole this book covers all the information required to identify your truck. It does not cover details such as the weather strip positions and types or profiles. I don't know what should be on the truck, so, I don't know what I have missing. USA sites also use nomenclature for restoration parts that do not translate to UK English. I'm sure USA readers will understand the terms used, but I don't.A great start, but more information is required to enable a thorough restoration.

If you own, or want to own, a Dodge truck built between 1948 and 1953, you will not find a more valuable information resource than this book. As with all of Mr. Bunn's Dodge books, this one is packed with well-researched facts, outstanding photos and fascinating truck history. For those of us who were not around when these trucks were new, it's the next best thing to a time machine. For those who were around, it will bring back memories of a time when trucks were built to work!

A good history of the early Dodges and some nice archival photos but if you are doing a restoration like I am not so helpful. I need 360 deg. Photos,component suppliers,etc. Expensive for the 3 or 4 photos that were useful to me.

I'm writing this review on behalf of my boyfriend who I bought this book for. He absolutely loved this handy little book!! He said all the classes and therapy group sessions where they tried to explain certain technique jargon finally became clear just by reading this book. The author does a great job at breaking down the process of anxiety and my boyfriend said he really felt at times he was in the room with him because his understanding is spot on! He even utilized the letter included in the book to help others understand a bit about what he goes through and suffers. It made him feel normal about his anxiety and that the severity is not uncommon. He now doesn't think he's overly crazy and that's priceless!!! Thanks for this little, amazing book!!

Let me sum up this entire book: breathe. When your life is full of constant panic, anxiety, and worry- All you have to do is a little yoga and breathe and your crippling fears will go away- according to everyone that does not actually have anxiety. Its not that this book is completely incorrect, its that it has no more info than a psychology today article and is too generalized to be helpful. If you just discovered yesterday that you may have very mild anxiety this may help you but if you've suffered for years, been to therapy and your looking for new info on handling daily life with anxiety, look elsewhere.

Unique among all the self help books I have read thus far in my life (which, admittedly, isn't many) I found Hardcore Self Help: F**k Anxiety to be helpful and applicable to my life and daily struggles almost immediately.Robert Duff doesn't use the dreaded "psychobabble"; he's not out to impress the reader with his superior intelligence, nor is he just talking to hear himself talk (er, write). These things make his advice and insight come across as genuine, his desire to help the reader with their anxiety sincere.Of course, what works for one person will not necessarily work for the next, but if you're struggling and looking for a book that deviates from the usual self help norm, I highly recommend Hardcore Self Help: F**k Anxiety.

Great segue into getting out of your head and into your life. Will you find all of the answers here? No. Why? Because they don’t exist. I had a major panic attack in the midst of reading this. By employing some of the suggested techniques I was completely fine the next day. Literally like the previous day never happened.

To be honest, I was looking for a bit more. I'm not sure what, but...more. Name your anxiety, breathe and count, you can do this. That was essentially my take away. Three stars for the info provided and five stars for the tone of the book...it was like a convo I would have with a friend or maybe myself.

It's a simple "It'll be okay." It doesn't claim to go deep in the psychological science of anxiety and that's fine. It helped me come to terms with a recent anxiety diagnosis through hilarious analogies and terrible language and simple coping mechanisms. I would definitely recommend it to others dealing with a new diagnosis.

After reading all the positive reviews for this book I was really looking forward to reading it. I was completely disappointed. Nothing new or profound nor useful. Waste of money.

A lot of books get into industry verbiage to the point where you feel lost. Now you have anxiety and you feel lost. Great! The only thing is I wish it was longer.

Instead of feeling like you're being doctored or having your head shrunk you feel like you're talking to a friend or fellow mate who also has anxiety and panic attacks. Not only does this book help you cope but it also makes you feel like you have someone to talk to. I would recommend this to anyone who suffers from anxiety and panic attacks or either one.

I really liked this convenient reference guide. I am a nursing student and thought it was pretty inclusive of the different clinical information for all life spans. The pages are wax-coated and sturdy, but the ringed binding has a tendency to come unwound with use, so I have to keep threading it. I think it would be nice if it was a ring binder that you could open and take out the cards you need for a particular area rather than keeping the whole thing in your pocket as it is pretty thick. The reason I decided to write this review, however, is because I am in my pediatric rotation, and when referencing the Pediatric Quick Reference for the average weight for a 10 y/o, it indicates 19-22kg (41.8-48.4 lbs), which is obviously underweight, and I checked the CDC growth chart to be sure. So, now I am leery of relying on any information in the booklet, esp. since I don't have enough experience to know correct/incorrect values. If I hadn't had it so long before noticing this, I would have returned it immediately.

I use this book ALL THE TIME as I'm in nursing school and in clinicals and work in the ER. It is extremely helpful when you need a brush up on something or you forgot a lab value or can't remember a step in performing some sort of critical. It has almost everything you need to know it, lab values, OD antidotes, assessment tools, procedure step by step guides like NG tube, Foley, IM, hand washing lol it even has a few critical questions to ask Spanish patients in English to Espanol translation. Highly recommend this for quick reference, whether it be school or work.

RNotes has been a lifesaver for me during nursing school. I am a second semester nursing student and use this during every clinical, as it fits perfectly in my scrub top.I would definitely recommend for nurses and student nurses!

The quality and the information in this is fine, but I have stopped carrying it with me as it's just clumsy to flip through and find exactly what you need. I think it's just quicker to stop by a computer and look up what you need to know.

There are multiple pocket guides available from the same company/author. I can't recommend them enough to nursing students. After looking at mine while in class a lot of my classmates purchased their own. I used this a lot more than my textbook.

It looks like this book will be extremely useful during nursing school. A little disappointed that my new book arrived scratched and has black gunk on it but I'll deal with it. This was a recommended book for my class and I'm glad I ordered it. It is a cheatsheet book for nursing and has a little NCLEX symbol next to things that you should know for the NCLEX. There are nice illustrations throughout and it is small enough to carry with you.

The pocket guide is great for a nursing student to review procedures, assessments, changes that occur at certain ages, trauma, medications, labs, and patient education. Some things have pictures that show how something is to be done, which is a great feature. Also, there's a little red NCLEX box to alert you that certain material has been seen on the NCLEX before. The only issue I have had with it is the lab ranges, as they were different from a text book, but that occurs with most lab ranges; just be vigilant. Otherwise, it's a great tool to use!

It is helpful for new nurses or nurses new to the medsurge nursing (I come from a psych/chemical dependancy nursing background) It also has different age groups such as peds and mother baby. I am able to brush up on procedures I have not done since nursing school!
