This is a favorite book for my 18 month old. There are so many details to find on each page, and some of the pages even include simple activities - count the legs on the spider, wiggle like a worm, point to the spots on the ladybug, trace the caterpillar's branch with your finger. We have 3 books in this series, and would recommend all 3 - we also have Birds and Weather.

I'd give the book 5 stars if the author hadn't wrongly asserted that ladybugs munch leaves. I get they were going for alliteration, but it doesn't seem right to include wrong information.

Jill McDonald is quickly becoming my 2 year old's favorite author. We have most of her books, and one of them goes everywhere with my son at all times. Her writing is simple enough to introduce children to major topics in science, but it also explains the topic in an accurate way. My son is 2 and has the entire solar system memorized thanks to these books! We are working on memorize the bugs now!

For the most part this book is good and my kid likes it. Why 3 stars? Apparently the authors don't know that Ladybugs eat aphids, not leaves. I guess they couldn't be bothered to do a basic google search on the roughly 10 bugs they featured.

My 2 year old son LOVES all of the books by this author, but this book especially sparked an interest for him in all sorts of bugs (which was nice timing with summer and seeing so many bugs in our own backyard). It has some cute interactive pieces in it and, as usual, the illustrations are wonderful. He asks to read this book and others by this author (Dinosaurs and Solar System in particular) every day. I like that each page includes "fun facts" for each of the bugs so he can learn more about all of the creepy crawlers he sees outside. I would highly recommend this book and others by Jill McDonald.

Jill McDonald books are some of my favorites for little ones. The illustrations are perfect and there is a perfect amount of info on each page, imo, to keep a toddler interested.

This book is my 10 month old's current favorite! He loves pointing out all the bugs and I like that it has little facts about the bugs on each page.

I received this book quickly and all shipping issues were taken care of immediately.This book is fantastic, as are most of Louÿs' works. It's got that perfectly dry sense of erotic humor that's amusing to read yourself or as a gift for a friend.I am looking forward to reading his other books.

If you have a friend who likes dirty humor and thinks sex jokes are hilarious, buy them this book for a gift. It's an absolute riot, I keep mine on my coffee table and it makes a good conversation starter. Although, you should definitely hide it when your parents come over as it is very ridiculous. I believe you can read a good portion of the book on Google Books, check it out!

I had a blast flipping through this book! It's one of the most witty pornographic readings I had for quite a while.

I'm proud to be the first to review this little gem which I discovered by pure chance in a bookstore.I'd often read of Louys' pornographic writing, yet everything I'd read (mostly poetry) was very tame by today's standards, though beautiful.This short book is a whole 'nother story. Wow. Louÿs addresses this anti-etiquette book to "little girls" - in other words children - and gives page after page of such diabolical advice like urging them to never tell daddy that their brother forced them to perform oral sex; to never masturbate with a statue of the virgin marry; or to never masturbate in a confessional "so that you can be absolved immediately afterwards." But Louÿs pulls it off with wonderful comedic skill, pretending to be dead-serious the whole time, and the book doesn't read like mere vulgarity, but rather as supreme wit. When I read it, I laughed out loud (literally) page after page.The book is also worthy of a deeper reading beyond the superficial comic side. I don't think the book can be dismissed as "just a joke". There is obviously a strong element of both fantasy and truth in this work. It brings up a really controversial question about child sexuality, and whether it exists or not. Louÿs seems to assume undoubtedly that it naturally does, and on an astounding level. It's also interesting to read that pornographic literature in 1926 was just as decadent (if not more so) as it is today. Child sexuality remains a very dreaded taboo in much of the world.The translation reads wonderfully, keeping the charm of the 19th century style and yet enjoying itself of modern slang, and the book is very slim and comfortable. You can read it in one sitting. I think it makes a great gift for granddaughters.

How strange to find this book unreviewed and may I infer from this Amazon neglect that it has gone somewhat unnoticed? This has compelled me to write my first review ever because I cannot think of a more relevant book that sheds light on who the real Gandhi was as opposed to the mythologized version of him that we are familiar with and heavily taught about in school. What we find is that the actual Gandhi may not have been propelled by the pristine humanitarian ideals with which we have invested him, but more that he was an apt politician who galloped adroitly on the memes of equality for all and, not only speaking truth to power, but using the steely will of one individual to galvanize a movement to overthrow a hulking colonial power. However, his intention was not to help untouchables or the myriad tribal peoples of India, his motivation was narrowly limited to the liberation of the upper Indian business classes for which the brahminical arm into which he was born supplied the erudite legal teams and court judges. These people had never tasted of humiliation or oppression pre-colonialization, and hence, had the vision and desire to regain their usurped esteemed status. While on the other side, nothing much had changed for Dalits and other lower castes with the arrival of the British, only the surnames of their rulers. To be clear, Gandhi was a great proponent of the caste system, and in no way wished to dismantle it, and Arundhati Roy illustrates this in the book, but he also was aware that he had been branded as a great Mahatma, and used this image freely to his advantage.The wise individual will not want to erase all the positive repercussions from history that Gandhi may have inadvertently provoked or inspired. I will still love seeing the bumpersticker, "Be the change you wish to see in the world," and rejoice over the good intentions of the individual who placed it on their vehicle. But that said, it's valuable to place a microscope on a figure whom we thought we knew in order to suss out the truth of the matter and Roy helps us to do that in her lyrical yet finely researched prose. The Gandhi we knew was one who had been repackaged for western consumption. This book takes also us bravely into the larger contextualization of Indian history and culture, for which most of us, have been largely clueless beyond the realities of yoga studios and bright mango lassies, allowing us to see the bigger picture in order to make finer sense of the complexity of this narrative.While the realization that the Gandhi we knew and loved is not the Gandhi who walked the earth may conjure resistance and bring on waves of sorrow, once the film is torn from the surface of our eyes, the world will be that much brighter. For some perhaps too bright, there is always the threat of imminent blindness in such situations. And that I believe is the culprit behind why this book has been sitting unreviewed for too long, the knowledge that we don't want to hear this story because it contradicts the mythologized version that we have been raised with.And the final wonder of the book is learning about Dr. Ambekar, born Dalit, who became a true champion of his untouchable caste. Because he lacked the marketing powers of his contemporary, we have failed to hear about him. He may after final review be the doctor and the saint in one, the hero we were searching for after all, and the one we embraced previously may have been a decoy all along.

JENNIFER AIST is founder and director of Providence Alaska Medical Center's parenting and childbirth education program, Parenting with Providence. She teaches classes on everything from breastfeeding to backpacking and conducts her signature "Babes in the Woods," "Babes in the Snow," and "Babes on the Water" classes every year. She has also consulted with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game on a preschool outdoor education curriculum. A graduate of the University of California, Davis, she lives in Anchorage, Alaska, with her husband and four children.

So, I'm writing this review a little prematurely, since I haven't finished the book just yet, but I have to say - I love it! The author provides great insight to camping with your kids and totally bestows the confidence you need to plan your first trip with your new addition. My husband I are avid backpackers and we just had our first child. Though we are seasoned campers, the idea of bringing our baby onto the trail is somewhat terrifying. Aside from the normal worries that plague every parent, the uncertainty of the woods only adds to it. That said Jennifer Aist has crafted a book that helps you organize yourself and reminds you it's all about getting back to nature.I would recommend this book to anyone seeking an adventure!!

I won't repeat all the praises already mentioned however, I do agree this is a great resource for active parents ready to continue their outdoorsy lifestyle with babies, toddlers, and kids in tow. Includes many tips and suggestions, broken down by age of child and activity type.My only two complaints are:1. the author is very specific to her home region in Alaska. If you are in a location with a very different climate, the points of reference are a bit more limiting.2. majority of the book does not focus on casual daytrips, so if your looking for step by step suggestions for the less experienced hiker, camper, etc... you would need to start with a book about the basics of camping or hiking first and use this book's tips as a supplimental resource.

As a grandparent who waited to take his own kids camping until they were over 6 or 7, this is the book I wish we'd had to take them on the trails earlier. That's why I bought copies for my now adult daughters as a guide to get the most enjoyment with their young children. Babes in the Woods is organized like a handbook of practical information for parents or guardians. The extensive index has over 100 topics to help plan a rewarding outdoor family experience. The author's voice is a friendly, "you can do it" style. There are over 100 items in the index.Charts include no-fail recipes, choosing a child carrier, heat related issues, planning considerations. The Bibliography and Resources sections are also useful.Readers will appreciate the highlighted "Tips and Tricks" throughout the book covering topics such as safety, diapering, gear selection, sun hats, car camping, boating and yes, bugs. It's clear to see that Aist has lived her chapters with her own kids and wants to encourage others to get out and enjoy sharing the wonders of nature.I strongly recommend Babes in the Woods for families and (grandparents).

My wife is an avid outdoors person. After finding out we were pregnant, we were worried about hiking and camping with a baby. This book provided some common sense insight, as well as out-of-the-box planning for camping/hiking with children of all ages, starting from birth to elementary school. A great resource for active parents!

Great information! I wish it was a little more organized by age to find info more quickly but it's written as book not a reference guide. Pictures are a cute too!

Great little book with useful tips/tricks! We loved it as a guideline for our first camping trips with our 5-month old and would recommend it to anybody wanting to do the same!

Again, this was a gift for the new baby family. they kept checking it out at the library, now they don't have to.

It had a lot of good info on it and was even better that writer is from Alaska. I also thought it has good hummer in it on things people don't like to talk about.

My 9 and 10 year old absolutely love this series.

Even though I havent read the first 2 installments of this comic, it wasnt hard for me to figure out the plot.I love comics and the artwork in this was was really good. The story line was fast paced and kept you engaged. Now I have to go find the previous installments of this great story!
