I was internally shouting, "WTF is this?!" but I was curious enough see where it led, and the further I got, the closer the two scenarios spun toward completion, and then it was over, and I understood . . .In Jabberwocky , Lewis Carroll turned the English language on its head. He used nonsense words that were dicipherable because of his expert manipulation of sentence structure and other, real words, that made the meanings of his imaginary words obvious.For the first time since I really understood and appreciated what Carroll had done, I felt the same kind of glee as I read about a girl losing her virginity and a girl taking her first life. One experience held the potential for the creation of new life, the other bringing an irrevocable end to life, and yet . . . He used . . . Canals ran out from the hollow Spine . . .My only words of caution are that, if you haven't already cottoned on, there is SEX in this YA novel, which isn't as uncommon as it used to be, but isn't yet unremarkable. And I'm not talking fade-to-black, acknowledgment of sexual congress, I'm talking burn-your-ears, think-interesting thoughts-about-the-hands-that-penned-them sex scenes.FYI.Kristoff calls Mia an assassin who is to death what a maestro is to a symphony. I felt the same way about Kristoff's manipulation of words and language. Whether Mia slipped into a room like a knife between the ribs or we met a man whose face was more scar than face, this reader felt like she was being spun and tossed by a master. Solus might by the Guardian of Songs, but Jay Kristoff made me dance to the music of his story in ways I've rarely been moved. O so ridiculously highly recommended.

My Thoughts: This was my first of Kristoff’s books to read (minus his co-authorship with Amie Kaufman with the Illuminae Files). I was really impressed with his writing, descriptions and character growth. Overall this book was a slowish read taking me a couple of weeks. I chose to take it slow because the writing was a bit dense and the world complex. For me, this was not a negative in the slightest. I love being fully immersed and really getting a lot of background and insight into all the characters.Mia, our main character, was nothing short of bad-a**. She suffered through an awful event in her childhood and so she sought nothing more than revenge. I loved her drive (haha) and yet even with her complete dedication to revenge those that hurt her family she was still likeable, relatable and had heart. I wasn’t ever exactly sure what she’d do in a situation which made her unpredictable and honestly fun to read.The secondary characters were amazing as well. Even those that barely made an appearance in the book *coughs* Lord Cassius *coughs* had me enthralled. I wanted to know MORE and this kept me reading. I was so impressed with the backstory we got for various characters- especially Tric. My goodness, I loved how detailed and yes, brutal, it all was. And brutal this book was- there was LOTS of gore, violence and blood. So much blood in fact there was an actual pool of it.The story itself was so detailed and not predictable in the slightest. The pacing varied some with the start being a tad slower than the ending. I found that the build up and world building were so worth it in the end but those that are eager for a faster paced story might find their interest lagging. Kristoff added footnotes that were so clever and added little, insignificant at times, details about the world and society. I found them such a great touch.As I mentioned above this book was geared to an older audience. There are sex scenes that are rather detailed so I’d put this in the adult fantasy category myself. I think my favorite aspect of this book was that nothing felt unused- the details and little bits we learned along the way all sort of tied in to really immerse me into this world. It became real to me. I got very emotionally wrapped up in the characters and I honestly got a bit rattled at a couple of scenes. I was also surprised by various things that occurred as well.Final Thoughts:Nevernight was an intense book that build such a realistic world and characters I was completely immersed. Kristoff had the ability to shock me and really created a novel with incredible depth. I can’t wait to find out what happens in the sequel. With the mature content, detailed descriptions, violence and length this book reads like an adult book so YA fans be aware of this.

I was hooked into this story by the fact that it follows a girl going to assassins school and I have to say I really truly loved this book. I loved Mia and how she doesn't hesitate in murder. If this was a story about a girl acting as a reluctant assassin who agonizes over what she has to do, I wouldn't have enjoyed the story as much as that path almost seems expected. Plain and simple, she's an assassin. Unapologetically. And that comes across very clear in the book. I love (and the author does an amazing job in having this come across) that the story makes this fact very clear and also gives Mia some heart without making her seem cold hearted and evil. Though that being said there is one bit that disappointed me, towards the end. The only reason, and I mean only reason, why I'm giving this book a 4 star and not a 5 star is the footnotes. Our narrator in the story has footnotes (some that are a half page or quarter page long) on almost every other page. It's a pet peeve of mine in books when an author or 'narrator' interrupts a story like that, as there is nothing that gets you out of said story faster than having to read these footnotes. In my experience, all these footnotes are on irrelevant trivia or notes- things that don't add to the story in any way but only detract from it. If the footnotes were more relevant and there was less of them I would have not as minded as much.

Between the name dropping of all the famous people the author knows and the general inability to weave the author's personal stories to the scriptures, my teens and I were confused what the point was. I think straight up metaphors would've been better, as it often felt the author was telling a story just to tell his story and the correlation to a verse was an afterthought. Which it likely wasn't because he's going in order through the New Testament. It just wasn't clicking though. We gave it an honest try; four months, every day, but no. When day after day my teens are saying "what does that have to do with the scripture quoted," we have to go back to our old devotional. This seemed more like an autobiography of an author's tales rather than a devotional. I really hesitated reviewing here because I am just so happy that people take the time to write devotionals for teens, but I just want to put it out there in case it matters. We have read many of the McDowell devotionals, and those seem to be much more poignant to the troubles teens face today. Whereas, I do not understand applicability to a teen who might struggle with popularity issues to continuously read all the famous people this author knows. Honestly, it's sort of reads like a brag devotion. Especially when we are made aware of a famous person, but we don't get application of that drop to the quoted scripture.

I have kids ages 9 to 15 and we find doing this at the dinner table -- when we have a captured audience -- is working pretty well.Others may relate to my situation:My 9yr old girl always wants to answer the questions first.My 11yr old boy is the first to say, "Hey, we read that same scripture in Sunday School."My 13yr old boy is slower in processing information and is absorbing most of the conversation....thus he contributes very little.My 15yr old boy is too cool to participate and it's pulling teeth to get him involved.Some of the stories or examples have to do with teen sex (teen sex issues specifically and temptations, not necessarily sex within marriage), so I tend to read that outloud as "purity of mind & body". This allows me to apply it to all my kids and the things they are putting in the mind and doing with their body versus limiting it to teen sex issues.OVERALL: It's sparked some good discussion and, as a family, we've been reading a verse or several verses each session. Getting us all into the Word of God can only be a good thing!!

Got this for my 15 year old son. We have only read through the first two, but so far we both really like it. I find that asking him the questions at the end of each one, letting him think about them, then having him actually answer them later in the day works really well. It gives him an opportunity to process and then having him actually verbally answer in his own words is a very profitable exercise. When you move the concepts you know in your mind, and have known for years (or have been told), into words of your own choosing, it very much solidifies even the basics of your faith. I would recommend this book for 13 and older for sure.

We were looking for something for our kids as they transferred into middle school that was a little more mature than the elementary type studies we were doing before. These are great and capture their attention, create good discussions and are not so childish they don't enjoy them.

Great book to go through with teens. It can be so hard to get teens to talk about their world, but this book is able to take a hypothetical and get them to use real world examples to answer questions. Well done.

We use this as our nightly family devotional. Only takes 5 minutes or so to read but sparks great conversations that sometimes go on for hours! Great for parents to get teens talking. We have a copy for each ember of our family and we write and take notes in it. Awesome!

We needed some guidance for devotions at the dinner table and this book has been great. The stories are good and the questions are challenging, for the teens as well as for the parents.We have kids ranging from 10-18 and it could happen that we need to skip a day as we find the subject a little too mature for the little ones. This is not strange since this is a book for teens and doesn't make this book less appropriate for little kids, however I would screen what is going to be read if you would like to use it for younger kids.

We were looking for a devotional book that would work for our family. We have children ages 11, 12, &14. Have only done a few of the devotions so far but we are really enjoying it. It gets everyone talking.

Ok I'm only on page 115 right at this moment, but so far so good. Very helpful. A lot of the stuff meaning online resources or websites mentioned in the book is a little out dated. I wish this offer will come out with a 2019 version of this book with up-to-date website so I could get that book. All in all this book is a great place to start glad I got money well spent.💰💸😜

This book is a decent effort, but could have done with some more editing. If you're a rank beginner to websites and internet marketing of all forms, the book may be helpful to get up and running. There are some decent tips in it about getting indexed by search engines quickly, the top 5-10 directories to submit to (if you have the budget), black hat SEO techniques to avoid, and content marketing ideas that used to work and still work fairly well.Unfortunately, the author felt the need to put a link to his website on almost every other page, making it feel too self-promotional. In fact, by the end of the book, Rognerud just slaps a banner at the end of each chapter and tells readers to visit his site, in addition to calls to action to visit his site throughout the book.Also, the book is outdated, especially for a new edition being published as late as February 2014. Google Website Optimizer is gone, for one. There are a couple of other tools that are also mentioned that have either gone away, been renamed, or have been changed drastically.In summary, feel free to get the book if you're just beginning in internet marketing. If you're looking for a more advanced SEO discussion, get the "Ultimate Guide to Link Building," or "Inbound Marketing and SEO."

If you know much at all about HTML and web design (let's say if you have 1+ years), then you could likely get more out of something else. This is a very basic book and while there are some good tips, it's really only for the very beginners.

First of all let me say that I am biased because I LOVE Tomie de Paola's books. All of them. My kids have them and we have read them again and again over the years. Love the illustrations and the true stories that he tells. I ordered this as a first communion gift for my sweet neighbor boy Paddy, who is named after St. Patrick. He loved it and his parents loved it. What a special little book! It's paperback but still very nice.

My kids loved reading this for St Patrick's Day! I liked the way it treated the more objective parts of his history first, and then had an added section of legends about St Patrick that included the reported miracles (like driving all the snakes out of Ireland by playing a drum). Illustrations are lovely, as I would expect from de Paola, and text is excellent for kids. My daughter keeps asking to re-read it.

Brought this book to share with my children and their classmates prior to St. Patrick's Day. Tomie dePaola is a wonderful author and illustrator and I try to purchase all of his books, especially the ones with religious themes. This is a good book that gives more information about St. Patrick and keeps the kids attention with the clear text and beautiful illustrations.

I loved this book! I have always celebrated St Patrick's day because of my Irish heritage but I never knew the history behind the actual saint. I loved learning right alongside my children. I especially appreciated how he added the legends at the back, but kept them seperate from the history- great for young kids learning the diference between fact and fiction.

Beautiful pictures and wonderful story to share with my three year old for many years to come!

We are taking my daughter and grandchildren to Ireland and I wanted them to know a little about the country

It was a great story to read to my students during St. Patrick's day to help us better understand a great saint!

This is not only the story of Saint Patrick but also includes certain myths about him at the end as well. It is nice and short for younger kids.

The general theme is that specific feed ingredients alter the gut microflora, enzymes and absorptive capacity, and that these alterations have implications for animal performance. In terms of dietary components, the emphasis is on feed additives, bioactive components and anti-nutritional factors rather than macronutrients such as carbohydrates, protein and lipids. In addition, there are chapters covering safety and legal aspects of ingredients for animal feeds. Each chapter stands alone and there is therefore some inevitable overlap. However, the overlapping topics are usually considered from a different perspective each time.The 21 reviews have been written by active researchers who are acknowledged experts in their respective fields. Each review is up to date and is written to a high scientific level. The technical editing has also been performed to a high standard to provide continuity of style. I have been in law (in recent days I'm on voluntary inactive status, happily) and legal education for decades. I wish I had a book like this at countless earlier junctures in my life. The author effortlessly zooms between layers of legal, business management, and financial history, then suddenly, seamlessly, to a fine grain of detail, as these unfolding events have been faced by participants. It rings very true to my experience. The pressure-cooker atmosphere can deeply distort the judgment of those immersed in it. The dilemmas are sharply portrayed here, and expertly put in context. As other reviewers have noted, a long attention span and an eye for legal-technical detail make this trip palatable and rewarding.If you are time-constrained, and would benefit from a broader look at several varied practice areas and lawyers' stories, in similar time-frames, with compact but excellent discussion, I recommend Lawyers Crossing Lines: Nine Stories by James L. Kelley. That book is amazingly readable alongside being informative and well-briefed law-wise.

"Eat What You Kill" is a moralty tale about legal practice. It reconstructs the self-immolation of a big firm lawyer who went to jail for lying about a conflict of interest in a Chapter 11 case. Along the way, the book tells the story of how greed and cutthroat competition took over law firm practice over the past 30 years.The analysis is thoughtful and nuanced -- but let's face it, bankruptcy litigation ain't the stuff of high drama. Even worse, the author never won the cooperation of the lying lawyer, leaving a huge hole at the center of the narrative. The page/insight ratio is just too high for the book to get more than three stars.Elite lawyers ply their trade in a bleak moral landscape. In what may be the greatest waste of human intellect since medieval monasticism, our legal high priests squander their superb educations devising strategies to preserve and augment the fortunes of people who already have too much money for their own good. In the process, the lawyers earn piles of money for themselves, but only by working 12-hour days, like deskbound slaves. Selling one's soul for cash is a grotesque bargain -- but we don't need "Eat What You Kill" to know that!Bottom line: "Eat What You Kill" isn't for everyone, but it is highly recommended for law students having second thoughts. It is also recommended for practicing lawyers coming to terms with the meaning of their lives.

The required reading for every law school student on legal ethics, especially for those inspiring to be a successful attorney, yet staying away from making the same mistakes described in this book and seeking prudently to strike a proper balance between their disire for success, professional ethics, clients' mandate and the expectation of the big, competitive Wall Street law firms.

Rings true, to every detail ... the author clearly researched his subject thoroughly, and writes in an engaging and easy-to-follow style. Hard to put down (at least for someone interested in legal ethics). Should be required reading for first year large law firm associates.

Just read a few chapters so far, but Regan offers a superb and very compelling explanation for the change of law firms in the past century...can't wait to finish!
