The best, most accessible book for a high school teacher (which I am) is Jonathan Golden's Reading in the Dark. They all cover the same material; the language is a bit different, and the attention to details varies. This book works, but it is a little thick with details that don't matter as much to the novice film student (which I am and which I teach)

When I tried to sign up for a community college "Intro to Film" course, I found that rather than being ubiquitous as I had assumed, such courses are frequently impossible to find these days. So I went looking for a book instead. My stumbling on "How To Read A Film" was a fortunate accident, it was just what I was seeking (and it didn't cost an arm and a leg).The book ranges very widely to cover a lot of different angles you might not expect to find between a single pair of covers: film technology, related media technologies, artistic history, commercial history, analysis, theory, relation to literary techniques, and the place of film within the arts. I realized only later that the relatively breezy style covers a whole lot of depth. I was painlessly introduced to quite a bit of fairly arcane terminology: things like "mise en scene" of course, but did you know where the term "pull-down" in your DVD creator program came from?(The author has made substantial revisions in new editions in order to keep this book current, even to the point of replacing whole chapters. If possible, it's worth getting a current edition; otherwise some topics may seem notably dated. Some editions also come with a DVD; if you want a DVD so the examples aren't just stills, you will have less choice of editions, and may not be able to choose the most current one. My comments refer to the Fourth Edition. )

A lot of the book's focus is on historic and technical details, which would make it excellent for an in-depth, well-focused course in scholarly film history, technique and theory. I acquired it for a general survey course for adult education students, mostly because it was affordable compared with other possible texts. Because it's more appropriate for the serious film student rather than the casual film buff, I chose the easiest chapters for them to absorb quickly, which was maybe 1/3 of the book. Although my class was made up of sophisticated individuals, they wanted something less technical. For future classes, I'll look for another general survey, probably one with more general film reviews and criticism focused on mainstream topics and social criticism.

I've been a reader of Monaco's How to Read a Film since the first edition. Over the years my admiration for it grows and grows. It is one of the few decent comprehensive books on the theories, history, technologies and cultural impact of motion pictures that manages to be both accessible to a novice and still valuable to an expert in the field. It's also very well written in a style that makes it a pleasure to read.

Classic film book that describes film theory, history, technique, and technology. If I taught a class on Film Study, this would be my text book. Very readable and comprehensive.

Had to buy for school and was cool enough

I bought a brand new book and it was only around $12 to $16 dollars. A good book for people who want to study the ins and outs of the film industry.

This is one of most comprehensive and yet easy to understand books on film. Well worth it! The chapters on theory and politics are particularly helpful.

This book is excellent for anyone who wants to understand the David vs Goliath conflict between guerilla forces and massive coventional armies. It gives proper insight into the force multiplier capabilities of guerilla warfare tactics in some of the most mismatched upset battles and wars (Cuba, Vietnam, Afghanistan) and why war in most cases is a no win scenario. A must read for any member of the armed forces!

Bought as a textbook for class and it reads like a textbook. I’m a fan of this kind of topic, but I wouldn’t suggest it as a fun read.

A must read in order to understand the Revolution

This book is older having been published in the 60's, but one of the best works on guerrilla war that I have read. The book looks mostly at the Cuban rebellion with Castro. There are other case studies including a look at the intensifying war in Vietnam. For those who want to learn about small wars this is an important work to read. And even though this work is old, it still can be applied to current conflicts in the middle east and Africa.

Our country is headed down a slippery slope. The flea is an interesting read and is doctrine for those who fight unconventionally. In this day and age of drones and tools this warfare style is the only one our nation has never really been able to squelch, nor has any other govt.DW

Read this book in the mid sixties, and picked up a new copy given current events. Still a fine and instructive read.

Good book, I don't use the Raspberry PI very often so I was able to pick up so good tips.

This is a gorgeously illustrated text on how to make simple Raspberry Pi widgets using minimal other parts. The 20 projects are divided into cameras, web apps, games, LEDs, displays and sensors. Just these topics give you a feel for the broad scope of what can be done and learnt with Raspberry.The other parts cover many discrete electronic items like potentiometers, known simply as pots. And resistors and Analog to Digital converters. The latter are represented by photos of a particular ADC - MCP3008, made by Motorola (aka bat wings). The overall point is to give an easy introduction to electronics. But in a nod to the pervasiveness of software, the book has examples of how to write short code to control the hardware. There is no attempt to give systematic explanations of basic electronics, like Ohm's Law or inductances, or of the complete syntax of a programming language. Those are better left to other texts.

I hope the authors of this book read this review and are encouraged by it. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and let's hope this is just the beginning of a long list of books by you. For the prospective reader, this book does exactly what the title suggests - provides you 20 EASY Raspberry PI projects. Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. Both of my girls love these books!! Great illustrations and edited LHOTP stories

The entire series of My First Little House books are great for younger children. I have always loved Little House and could hardly wait to share it with my daughters. With these books I can start reading to them about Little House when they are toddlers. The illustrations are lovely and the text is simple but descriptive. I would recommend any of this series.

My five year old granddaughter adores this series. Need to buy a few more books to complete the series.

This is one of my 3-year-old’s favorites from the series.

We are trying to buy the entire collection of these "My First Little House" books, this was just another one we didn't have. Good clean stories and my five year old granddaughter just loves them all.

Laura Ingalis is such a wonderful story teller. Makes the story come to life. Makes you want to go back and live there for a time.

Love all these books very fun for kids

I loved the Laura Ingalls Wilder books when I was a kid and now I'm reading them to my grandchildren. I love these illustrated versions. They're perfect for toddlers.

Great book--written for guitar players (not adapted from piano music) and has multiple guitar parts with lots of explanations about alternate tunings and such.

Installed there program TNT 2 and it had Malware slowed and stalled my computer my Malware Killer removed it.But now i ask can i trust Alfred ? Do i buy from Alfred ? Not Happy!

The tabs are great, but I thought that of the two discs, one would be instructional video. They are audio only, and appear to be identical.Guess I need to rely on YouTube for the video

Great collection of classic Stones' songs, and seemingly well tabbed; the discs and their accompanying player software allow quite a bit of tweaking to let you focus on one guitar part or another. The editors have attempted to be quite faithful to the recorded versions of the songs with respect to the musical notation and tabs, so be prepared to open tune your guitar to follow Keith's example! Only drawback is the book doesn't open flat for easy reading from the music stand, otherwise it's great fun!

This play along is very good to learn how Keith Richards works with the alternate tunnings. Just two of these songs are in standart tunning.

WILL OSBORNE and MARY POPE OSBORNE have been married for a number of years and live in northwestern Connecticut with their three dogs, Joey, Mr. Bezo, and Little Bear.   Mary is the author of over one hundred books for children, including novels, picture books, biographies, and retellings of fairy tales and world mythologies. Will has worked for many years in the theater as an actor, director, and playwright. Together he and Mary have coauthored two books of Greek mythology and eight Magic Tree House® Fact Trackers. Will has also written a multimedia planetarium show, Magic Tree House Space Mission, and is cocreator with Randy Courts of Magic Tree House: The Musical, a full-scale Broadway-style family musical based on Christmas in Camelot.   SAL MURDOCCA has illustrated more than 200 children's trade and text books. He is also a librettist for children's opera, a video artist, an avid runner, hiker, and bicyclist, and a teacher of children's illustration at the Parsons School of Design. My 7 year old son is obsessed with the Titanic & his favorite books are Magic Tree House so this was a no brainer for me! He is able to read it on his own for the most part only needed occasional help with a few words. It's the same length as the other MTH books. It has fun facts as well as some good pictures. Overall a great book & purchase!

The Magic Tree House fact Tracker #7: Titanic was a wonderful Christmas gift this year for my 9 year grand-daughter.We all shared watching the actual movie of "The Titanic", and she loved it. Her words were "Awesome".So,.. I sent this to her for Christmas. Mom and Dad said that she loves it, and picks the book up a lot.She took it to school for show and tell. These Magic Tree House books are wonderful.It is so great for children to enjoy reading books,.. and especially this time, after seeing the movie,..she was thrilledto get this for Christmas. A great gift.

This was a gift for a young child fascinated by the Titanic. He loved this book and wil probably be encouraged to go into naval engineering because of it!
