This book is a very well-written, clear, and reasonably complete introduction to the elements of human language and introductory topics of linguistics. It would serve well as an introductory textbook for non-Linguistics majors, foreign language majors, and education majors who may be required to take a language study course. It could also serve in the same capacity for high school courses that fit a college-bound curriculum. In all cases, it is a pleasant read for anyone interested in the story of human languages. As a textbook, it is reasonably-priced and compact. There is really little else in this niche that can compare to this textbook. The standard for a more rigorous introduction to linguistics study probably remains the Fromkin editions, and they are considerably more expensive.

I like this textbook because it has enough depth and yet is easy enough to understand for beginning linguistic students. I like the Kindle edition because it is easy to search for a given passage and copy phrases to slides when explaining homework.Also, the Kindle edition makes it easy to look up words you don't understand.As an instructor, I wish the publisher would provide an answer key (for instructors only).

The words "leaving home" are central to my Leaving Home Trilogy. Leaving Home is most often understood as leaving a place of residence, more commonly known as your home. But in the Leaving Home Trilogy they take on a very different meaning. Every child grows up in the emotional home of their early years, and every child's initial response to life is based on the emotional condition of that first home. An obvious example would be growing up in a home of violence leaving the impression of a violent world the child has come to expect and needs to protect itself from. As the early expectations are experienced internally over and over they become habit, and as habit they recede into the unconscious mind from where they dictate many of the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of a person's ongoing life. On the other hand, if the home is one of care and support and respect for who the child is the child grows up into a world he or she can trust and thrive in. Growing up in an enclave of ethnic lower-middle-class workers in Detroit, a young boy views his family enmeshed in the drama of the old country culture, the new country values, struggling to make sense of their lives amidst co-dependency, alcoholism, in-fighting, jealousy, and love. He sees all the family members playing their assigned roles and doesn't understand the motivations behind the complex roles and emotions swirling around them as he is growing up in the chaos. It is an intriguing story of how first-and second-generation Americans cope with straddling the lines between their parents' cultures and desires and their desire to fit in and make their own way in the American Dream in the 1959s.

Worship of Hollow Gods depicts the family norms, rituals, and religious routines of a Catholic, Polish, Detroit family in the 1950's. The weekly family gathering to play poker and pinochle is the main setting yet the beautifully written images of the family personalities takes the reader below the surface to the vulnerable underbelly of their dynamics. This book became a challenge for me to examine my own family, relating to the gatherings and unspoken expecatations within relationships. I love that this book is the first of three in what Sniechowski calls the "Leaving Home Trilogy". I find it is compelling to be confronted with what that means to "leave home" when we realize the reality of our family's faults. So, this book ends and leaves me wanting the next installment of his journey!

Not many writers can get you thinking about your life months after reading their books. Jim Sniechowski is the exception. He is a towering intellect with the ability to pen a page-turner. You're going to love this book for its intensity, its rollercoaster of emotions, its humor and its humanness.

I got wrapped up quickly into the story and could deeply relate to the feelings and things Jimush was going through.It was easy to correlate many things in this book with my own childhood as well as the childhood of many of my clients. I was shocked at what happened near the end of the book. My hope is that Jim plans on writing a future book that shares how the events in this book have affected his life and hopefully have helped him to grow as a person or maybe helped put him on a specific path or purpose in his life. My only disappointment is that I don't know what happened next and so, I'll be watching to see if there is another book to continue the storyline.

I narrated this audiobook. So, yes, I'm biased. But importantly, before I decided to record it I read it and fell in love with it. Sniechowski transported me to another time and place. His fantastic array of characters jump off the page with their isms. His writing style is tough, real, bitingly funny at times, visceral to it's core and full of love--I imagine much like the man himself. But this ain't just some guy's story. This is a highly revealing, deft tale of survival, finding oneself, and the search for love. It's a book that'll move you. It moved me.

My husband and I filled these out and had such a good time. I definitely recommend - it's a great way to connect.

My hubby and I have been together seven years, and married for one. I bought this for our anniversary. We both scored almost the exact 1,000 points. It was sweet to confirm that we know each other so well, but the questions were kind of dull and not as funny as I was hoping. Between the two books there were about six questions we thought shouldn't have been asked because in a different relationship they could have started an argument. For instance, which of your female friends is he most attracted to? Let's not touch that with a ten foot pole. When was she at her highest weight (or is she now?) First and last name of his old flame? It wasn't quite the romantic game I had in mind. But it was still a fun way to pass the time, and I was surprised how long it took for just 100 questions.

Originally published in 1979. The questions seemed out of date socially and technologically to us. This was written before smart phones changed our lives and how we do things. Waste of money. There are much better questions online. Wish I had just googled a list. We didn't have much fun with it. Luckily it was just a cheap stocking stuffer.Examples of antiquatedness:1. Your at a small gathering at the home of a friend. After some boring vacation videos, the friend starts to show x-rated video. What does he do? The next question is what would he do if you weren't there?2. Which parts of a newspaper does he read regularly?3. Does he look at Men's magazines that feature photos of nude women?4. What his point of view about whether the mothers of young children should take a paying job?

Bought this book to fill out and give to my husband for Valentine's Day. After 17 Valentine's the jewelery and dinners start to loose their "umph" and I am always looking for more creative, personal gifts. The book is set up as 100 questions that you answer about your husband. Some of the questions made you stop and think, like "how does your husband put on his socks and shoes? sock sock shoe shoe or sock shoe sock shoe" Even after 17 years I questioned what I thought. I ended up picking right! When we exchanged our books on Valentine's Day we had a great time going over what the other filled out - some answers were down right hilarious. You'd be surprised what you know or don't know about the other or even what you know you did know at one time but forgot! We may try to find something like this again.

If you and your spouse would like to test or quiz one another on how much they know this is the book for you. My husband and I are slightly competitive towards one another in a fun way. I enjoy winning and proving I am right lol. What I have discovered so far is they he seems to pay more attention to me than I thought. He answers these questions easily and is typically right. I tend to struggle a little more with the answers. It is fun!

We loved filling out these books! Although some of the questions were a little outdated (questions about radios and favorite newspaper sections), it made for some great date nights - we split it up into 20 questions each night, answering 5 questions at a time and then going over the answers. We learned a lot of fun things about each other and lead us to some cool conversations! Bonus, they were cheap! We plan to throw these in to wedding gifts as a fun addition in the future.

Cover looks like something from the '50's. Timeless questions to bounce off your spouse. Love keeping these kinds of books in the car for long road trips just to keep conversations going. Great for long waits in a waiting room, airports or when stuck in a hotel room. Good questions which opens up dialogue on just about any subject. Pair it up with Do You Know Your Wife. Dont' know why they don't just sell it as a set. Would recommend using pencil when checking off your answers, you can always pass the books along to another couple to enjoy which is what I did.

I gave this one and Do you know your wife to my husband as an early Valentines present. I honestly did not think he would want anything to do with them and was shocked when he insisted we incorporate it into our weekly date night. We made a game out of it and randomly picked pages and completed numbers. Then took turns asking and telling our answers. It was a blast and conversation starter. I purchased the "Do You Know Your Wife" and "Do You Know Your Husband" quizzes for an at home date night I planned for my husband and I. We actually took the quizzes on the 8th anniversary of our first date. It was so much fun to see just how much we knew about each other after 8 years together. A few of the questions didn't really apply to us, but overall, the quiz was a lot of fun. We had a great time filling out the booklets and then reading each others answers. I have since recommended these booklets to several friends as a fun addition to date night.

The best, most accessible book for a high school teacher (which I am) is Jonathan Golden's Reading in the Dark. They all cover the same material; the language is a bit different, and the attention to details varies. This book works, but it is a little thick with details that don't matter as much to the novice film student (which I am and which I teach)

When I tried to sign up for a community college "Intro to Film" course, I found that rather than being ubiquitous as I had assumed, such courses are frequently impossible to find these days. So I went looking for a book instead. My stumbling on "How To Read A Film" was a fortunate accident, it was just what I was seeking (and it didn't cost an arm and a leg).The book ranges very widely to cover a lot of different angles you might not expect to find between a single pair of covers: film technology, related media technologies, artistic history, commercial history, analysis, theory, relation to literary techniques, and the place of film within the arts. I realized only later that the relatively breezy style covers a whole lot of depth. I was painlessly introduced to quite a bit of fairly arcane terminology: things like "mise en scene" of course, but did you know where the term "pull-down" in your DVD creator program came from?(The author has made substantial revisions in new editions in order to keep this book current, even to the point of replacing whole chapters. If possible, it's worth getting a current edition; otherwise some topics may seem notably dated. Some editions also come with a DVD; if you want a DVD so the examples aren't just stills, you will have less choice of editions, and may not be able to choose the most current one. My comments refer to the Fourth Edition. )

A lot of the book's focus is on historic and technical details, which would make it excellent for an in-depth, well-focused course in scholarly film history, technique and theory. I acquired it for a general survey course for adult education students, mostly because it was affordable compared with other possible texts. Because it's more appropriate for the serious film student rather than the casual film buff, I chose the easiest chapters for them to absorb quickly, which was maybe 1/3 of the book. Although my class was made up of sophisticated individuals, they wanted something less technical. For future classes, I'll look for another general survey, probably one with more general film reviews and criticism focused on mainstream topics and social criticism.

I've been a reader of Monaco's How to Read a Film since the first edition. Over the years my admiration for it grows and grows. It is one of the few decent comprehensive books on the theories, history, technologies and cultural impact of motion pictures that manages to be both accessible to a novice and still valuable to an expert in the field. It's also very well written in a style that makes it a pleasure to read.

Classic film book that describes film theory, history, technique, and technology. If I taught a class on Film Study, this would be my text book. Very readable and comprehensive.

Had to buy for school and was cool enough

I bought a brand new book and it was only around $12 to $16 dollars. A good book for people who want to study the ins and outs of the film industry.

This is one of most comprehensive and yet easy to understand books on film. Well worth it! The chapters on theory and politics are particularly helpful.

This book is excellent for anyone who wants to understand the David vs Goliath conflict between guerilla forces and massive coventional armies. It gives proper insight into the force multiplier capabilities of guerilla warfare tactics in some of the most mismatched upset battles and wars (Cuba, Vietnam, Afghanistan) and why war in most cases is a no win scenario. A must read for any member of the armed forces!

Bought as a textbook for class and it reads like a textbook. I’m a fan of this kind of topic, but I wouldn’t suggest it as a fun read.

A must read in order to understand the Revolution

This book is older having been published in the 60's, but one of the best works on guerrilla war that I have read. The book looks mostly at the Cuban rebellion with Castro. There are other case studies including a look at the intensifying war in Vietnam. For those who want to learn about small wars this is an important work to read. And even though this work is old, it still can be applied to current conflicts in the middle east and Africa.

Our country is headed down a slippery slope. The flea is an interesting read and is doctrine for those who fight unconventionally. In this day and age of drones and tools this warfare style is the only one our nation has never really been able to squelch, nor has any other govt.DW

Read this book in the mid sixties, and picked up a new copy given current events. Still a fine and instructive read.

Good book, I don't use the Raspberry PI very often so I was able to pick up so good tips.

This is a gorgeously illustrated text on how to make simple Raspberry Pi widgets using minimal other parts. The 20 projects are divided into cameras, web apps, games, LEDs, displays and sensors. Just these topics give you a feel for the broad scope of what can be done and learnt with Raspberry.The other parts cover many discrete electronic items like potentiometers, known simply as pots. And resistors and Analog to Digital converters. The latter are represented by photos of a particular ADC - MCP3008, made by Motorola (aka bat wings). The overall point is to give an easy introduction to electronics. But in a nod to the pervasiveness of software, the book has examples of how to write short code to control the hardware. There is no attempt to give systematic explanations of basic electronics, like Ohm's Law or inductances, or of the complete syntax of a programming language. Those are better left to other texts.

I hope the authors of this book read this review and are encouraged by it. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and let's hope this is just the beginning of a long list of books by you. For the prospective reader, this book does exactly what the title suggests - provides you 20 EASY Raspberry PI projects. Both of my girls love these books!! Great illustrations and edited LHOTP stories

The entire series of My First Little House books are great for younger children. I have always loved Little House and could hardly wait to share it with my daughters. With these books I can start reading to them about Little House when they are toddlers. The illustrations are lovely and the text is simple but descriptive. I would recommend any of this series.

My five year old granddaughter adores this series. Need to buy a few more books to complete the series.

This is one of my 3-year-old’s favorites from the series.

We are trying to buy the entire collection of these "My First Little House" books, this was just another one we didn't have. Good clean stories and my five year old granddaughter just loves them all.

Laura Ingalis is such a wonderful story teller. Makes the story come to life. Makes you want to go back and live there for a time.

Love all these books very fun for kids

I loved the Laura Ingalls Wilder books when I was a kid and now I'm reading them to my grandchildren. I love these illustrated versions. They're perfect for toddlers.
