I read this book in hardcopy when first published, and just finished listening to the Audible version. My takeaway is that this is a really interesting biography marred only slightly by the writer’s tendency to sometimes insert too much of his own personality and opinions into what appear to otherwise be accurate reporting of historical events. For anyone who was a kid in the 70s and remembers the cultural phenomenon that was Evel Knievel, this biography offers an exhaustive look inside how that personage was created, and the forces that ultimately lead to the character’s downfall.A few reviews on this site accuse the book of being a character assassination. I don’t agree with that. Most of the events described have a ring of well researched truth. The only problem I had is that the writer tends to phrase things in a slightly snarky way, poking fun at Knievel’s expense. He may in fact be an easy target but that constant hint of sarcasm in the telling of events makes the tale seem a little less unbiased than it would have otherwise. The author also, while generally writing in a very engaging and lively style, has a tendency to insert himself into the narrative through an over use of cutesy phrasing. For example, when recounting a personal event in Evel’s life, he will write along these lines “Maybe he was at a bar in Phoenix. Maybe someplace else.” On the surface that sounds like sloppy research, however I got the feeling the author knew exactly where events happened, and was trying to make the point that it was a repeated behavior that could have happened anywhere. A writing device like that is fine used once. In this book it is used over, and over, and over - to the point I found it a little disruptive to the narrative. The author clearly knows where events happened (or should know).Final note: this book is packed with fantastic research, anecdotes and information. But even at its great length it doesn’t have everything I remember about Evel simply from being alive in the 1970s. Some examples of things I remember that were not mentioned include a proposed weekly half hour prime time fictional TV show, with an actor playing Evel who would be involved in weekly adventures and jumps. This got as far as being cast and a pilot being made. I don’t know if the film still exists but I remember seeing the pilot broadcast on the network, probably in the summer of 1975, as part of a series of unsold TV pilots they aired once to fill space that summer. Not in the book but worth mentioning is also the Saturday morning cartoon “Devlin” which was clearly inspired by Evel Knievel, and what Evel thought about it. And finally, how the top rated TV show Happy Days used Fonzie to parody Knievel’s exploits, not once but twice. Best remembered today is Fonzie’s infamous shark jump. But prior to that, there was a two part Happy Days where Fonzie tried to set a world record by jumping his motorcycle over garbage cans. In true Knievel style he cleared the cans but crashed on the landing ramp and was hospitalized. And in a wicked spot-on Knievel parody, when the father on Happy Days offers to drive the injured Fonz to the hospital in the family station wagon, Fonzie says (I am paraphrasing from a 40 year old memory of the original broadcast): “No, not in a station wagon. I want to go in an ambulance, with flashing lights, and big windows so I can wave to my fans...”

This book was very well written. Even when it got into the technical description and Engineering of things it was still easy to follow and still kept the reader's interest. This is a must-have for everybody who loved Evel Knievel. Makes you want to go back and revisit the 70s for sure.

If Evel was half as bad as described here (there are two sides to every story), then he was still about six clicks beyond textbook narcissist. Except for the pain and strife he caused those close to him, I don't begrudge him this. To do what he did a person has to be a little, no, ALOT whacked. I guess in the measure of a life you have to look at the enjoyment he brought to the larger audience who never met him personally. We spent many hours as kids jumping our banana-seated, monkey-barred bicycles, trying to emulate the version of Evel we'd see that afternoon on Wide World of Sports. Those were golden days. Thank you Leigh Montville for writing a splendid book that allows us to revisit that era.

This book tells about the famous daredevil, Evel Knievel. And it is every bit as colorful, as the man you would see on TV performing some of his death defying tricks. It was entertaining at times and insightful! Warning: There is a lot of obscenity

This is one of the BEST biographies I have ever read, and I've read many. You do not have to be a sports fan or a fan of Evel Knievel. It was entertaining and fascinating, from beginning to end, which I think is rare in a biography. Better than biographies of Jim Morrison or Mick Jagger, or just about any entertainer. What surprised me were the stories from his early days, before he became famous, which can sometimes make the beginning of a story kind of drag, but the whole book was fascinating. Couldn't put it down. Whether you loved or hated him, he was truly an American original. Leigh Montville tells a story like nobody else can.

Having lived during and witnessing Evel's glory days on ABC's Wide World of Sports, his bizarro attempt with bizarro attention given to it to jump the Snake River Canyon and also seeing his sad and quick fall from celebrity to broke background noise I found this book a great read. The author calls it the way I remember it with lots of fleshing out and interesting stories to paint a very complete picture of Mr Robert "Evel" Knievel.Though not explicitly asked of the reader, I believe this book requests the contemplation of what such a person/act like Knievel rising to such fame says about American society and culture. Unless I'm over analyzing but I dont think I am.My only quibble? How can the tale of Evel jumping over a tank of sharks be told, with no mention of the greatest shark jumper of them all (The Fonz) being made?!?!?!

This is a surprisingly well presented tale about one of Butte's strange people. Leigh Montville has fashioned a really interesting tale about the life of Kneivel. Little seems to have been invented to make the book such a good read. I recognize the 50's, 60's in Butte and only just discovered the rest of Evel's adventures in the wider world. I enjoyed this presentation and was surprised to learn that I did.A friend mentioned one name in this book, moments later Amazon had found the book and loaded it to my Kindle. It is a good read!

Great read that tells much of not just the daredevil and public persona, but also of the man behind the scenes.

The few (Romanian) people who gave this book a negative review weren’t criticizing the interesting stories, or the fascinating observations expressed by a skilled writer, or any of that; but just how they sometimes showed Romanians in a megative light. That the stories were true didn’t seem to matter— some people just can’t bear criticism.I’ve lived in Romania for over 6 months (and married one!) and I can vouch for Mike Ormsby’s spot-on observations and descriptions. He has a keen eye (and memory) for detail, and a witty, interesting style that reminds me of Bill Bryson or Peter Mayle (author of A Year in Provence). He can see irony and farce in almost any situation, to which most of us might not give a second thought.Plus, he had an obvious fondness for Romanians and their sometimes silly attitudes and quirks; why else would he live there so long, and write so much and so lovingly about them?Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and his others on Romania, and so will anyone who is thinking of going there, or is simply curious about what life is like on the far side of Europe. Foarte bine!

I bought this book as an intro for my upcoming trip to Romania. I had to stop reading 400 pages in as, while it may be 100% honest, it is overwhelmingly depressing. It made me want to cancel my trip to Romania. Surely no-one has had so problems visiting a country? I have been to some dodgy countries so far, but this made me feel I would be snubbed, beaten and harassed within 5 minutes of being there, and I don't scare easily. I read up to page 400 and deleted. Way too out there. Defintely bot a book to read BEFORE travelling to Romania, but maybe better for people that have lived there and maybe had similar experiences. I also agree that the stories didn't fully end as another reviewer wrote.

I can testify to the veridicity of the stories, as our family is Romanian, but we have been living abroad for 20 years. So we are lucky enough to have a double perspective, as both "insiders" and "outsiders".I find Mike Ormsby's book to be as objective as one gets, funny, but also full of love and a deep understanding of the country and of its inhabitants. Once I have started to read it, I could not put the book down until I have finished it, hoping that it will never end, that there will be yet another story...

Admittedly, it has taken me some time to discover Never Mind the Balkans, Here's Romania, first published in 2008, yet here I am now, eager to fill that awkward gap. In this collection of fifty-seven short stories, Mike Ormsby, a writer and former BBC journalist/World Service trainer, chronicles various moments of his experiences in Romania between 1994 and 2006, when Romania became his home.Published simultaneously in Romanian as Grand Bazar Romania (translated by Vlad A. Arghir), Ormsby’s book received a range of reactions - from sheer enthusiasm to harsh criticism - mostly depending on readers' personal visions, expectations, and sometimes, on their nationality.Personally, I could not help getting absorbed in tales that so vividly evoke situations and characters almost identical to those I have come across, eight years later.Irony - and, even more valuable, self-deprecating irony - seems to me the X-factor which makes you enjoy reading this book, to the point that some local critics have dubbed Ormsby ‘our British Caragiale’, after the 19th century playwright and satirist. Alas, I wish I knew more about Caragiale - just another one of the huge gaps I still need to fill - to fully appreciate that comment, surely enough, though, the author's funny and bittersweet tone works as an antidote to his keen empathy with Romanians and their unique land, providing him with a safe distance from which to observe the scene. This book strikes me for having succeeded in assembling such a vivid gallery of characters, so powerfully close to the "real thing": you cannot but feel grateful for that. In each story, the author blends into his surrounding and allows characters to speak for themselves. His voice is never invasive nor in the least sounding like the usual "wise guy from the West". Rather, quite often he limits himself to acting as litmus paper within his environment, letting people and situations speak for themselves. Like in Why Not, where his artistic projects with his friend Adrian finally cannot but crash when faced with the dumb indifference of an incompetent journalist, whereas in Nice Sofa, Ormsby lucidly stops aside to actually wonder, “Was it my fault? Was I some wise guy from the West, with big ideas?” So, as I went on reading - always with valuable help from my Urban Dictionary - I enjoyed descriptions conjuring up, in a bunch of words, whole human landscapes and situations.More. Many tales leave you with a surreal aftertaste, not an infrequent impression in Romania. Take Labyrinth, where characters successfully incarnate one mainstream approach to life here: "Live by the rules and don't get stressed.” Others - with generous help from serendipity - focus on the past or dig into local history to finally present you with little treasures, like Buried, where, en passant, Mihai Eminescu is described as that chap "with the rock-star looks”. The tale sheds light on the little known, tragic biography of a promising young translator, Corneliu Popescu, whom Ormsby discovers by chance while searching in the public library for English translations of Romanian authors. As a teenager, Popescu translated Eminescu, and brilliantly so, but died alongside his mother in the 1977 earthquake.Another kind of sadness takes you when reading tales like 'paga, depicting the use of bribes as the mainstream strategy to solve any practical problem or life issue, applicable at every possible social level. The good thing about these tales is that they are not Bucharest-centred: Ormsby travels the whole country and encounters very different human habitats. In The Wrong Place, we end up in a small village, Tu'nad, with poor Tanti Dorina who is caught in her damp bed between past and future, whereas in Too Good To Be True, a hiking trip takes us up into the Carpathian Mountains, dangerously close to angry sheepdogs. But it is definitely in tales like Faith, Hope, and Chablis that I most appreciate Ormsby's voice. Here, two worlds - West and East Europe (allow me to generalise) appear to get extremely close one another, yet something goes wrong and it does smack of us-and-them - indeed a chasm - unless prejudice and self assurance are not won by good will and a sincere wish to understand "the other". I won't say more, because I do invite you to pick up this book and enjoy your reading.Overall, I am grateful to Ormsby and will steal a quote from John Lennon, one which the author passes on to his friend George, a character we meet in several tales: “Life is what happens while you are making other plans.”

This is not a travel guide nor a travelogue. Mike's short stories give an insider's look into the Romanian soul.

At first I thought I wouldn't like this book - it's a book of very short stories about small events in the author's life. At first the stories annoyed me since they have no ending. I think the main reason I expected not to like it was the ugly cover and dumb title. But the book grew on me. Mike Ormsby is an English journalist who has lived in a number of different countries and has settled in Bucharest. The stories are conversations or adventures he has with Romanian friends or alone. Many of them are sort of bleak, not awful but not upbeat. It's clear that Romania doesn't run very well - politicians are corrupt, laws are not enforced, decisions are made that make little sense. People drink and smoke a lot and are not generally optimistic. I don't know for sure why Mr Ormsby has stayed so long except that he likes the people. But by the middle I felt like I got some insight into Romania and its inhabitants. And that's good enough for me.

Hymns for the Fallen: Combat Movie Music and Sound after Vietnam

Review

"Marked on every page by clear logic, sensitive perception, and emotional commitment, this is a welcome and original study." (CHOICE)"The measure of any study, regardless of the field, is its ability to provide new insights and approaches to critical analysis and thus facilitate greater understanding. Such new approaches are particularly important for the mechanisms of cinematic genre because of genre’s dynamic tendency to reflect a given period’s cultural attitudes. Decker’s monograph accomplishes all of this. It is a welcome addition to the literature and will not gather dust on the bookshelf of anyone who is interested in film form in general and in the film score in particular." (American Music)

From the Inside Flap

"In this dynamic study, Todd Decker explores the significance of sound in four historic cycles of Hollywood combat films. Made in the decades following the Vietnam War, these movies reflect the changing public psyche, with shifting perspectives on soldiers, veterans, sacrifice, catharsis, and memorialization. What the audience hears is key to evolving narrative and political strategies, and the insightful holistic focus on all soundtrack elements—dialogue, sound, and music—reveals the complex ethical territories and representational maneuvers of films that exploit violence while simultaneously making moral statements about violence."—Miguel Mera, City, University of London "Decker has captured the aesthetic, emotional, and narrative sorcery of modern combat films' soundscapes, and has woven engaging and articulate close analyses of the musical, vocal, and sound-effect components that illustrate the most bombastic and sensitive filmic moments. He reveals the sonic elegance behind the tragic despair."—Vanessa Theme Ament, author of The Foley Grail: The Art of Performing Sound for Film, Games, and Animation "By undertaking a meticulous and far-reaching sound analysis of a broad array of war films, Decker reveals hidden continuities that a normal audience member could never discern. This is extremely important work, because these hidden structures are subtly shaping contemporary attitudes to war, and to violence more broadly. Decker doesn’t merely describe how music, voice, and sound work in these films (although he does do this, admirably); he also helps us understand how these films work on us. Given the extent to which popular ideas about war and ethics are formulated through cinematic experiences, this book should be required reading."—J. Martin Daughtry, author of Listening to War: Sound, Music, Trauma, and Survival in Wartime Iraq

American Seafood: Heritage, Culture & Cookery From Sea to Shining Sea, by Barton Seaver

Review

Barton Seaver's American Seafood is a comprehensive and inspirational exploration of lesser known species and rekindles an awareness of the people, places, and histories of our oceans." -Eric Ripert, Chef & Co-Owner of Le Bernardin "In American Seafood, Barton beautifully navigates the complex historical relationship between our nation and the sea, while sharing his pragmatic perspective on how to best manage the resource to benefit future generations of fisherman and consumers." -Tom Colicchio, Chef/Owner Crafted Hospitality"As the great philosopher Brillat-Savarin wrote, 'Tell me what you eat and I'll tell you who you are.' I have no doubt that we are who we are because for generations we have benefitted from the bounty of seafood from our oceans. If humanity wants to keep being who we are, we will need to take care of the oceans that have given us so much. Barton¹s new book American Seafood gives you a complete retrospective of why this is so important for our past, our present, and our future." -José Andrés, Chef/Owner, minibar by José Andrés and ThinkFoodGroup"I can't stop reading this book. I've caught, cleaned and eaten nearly every species of fish in North America, but Barton's got me beat. His experience shines in this relentlessly fascinating work that is teaching this old angler new tricks. But even better than his species accounts are his rich vignettes about America's diverse fishing culture, a culture too precious to be lost, despite the intense pressures facing our rivers, lakes and seas." -Hank Shaw, 2013 James Beard Award winner, Best Food Blog, Hunter Angler Gardener Cook, and author of Hunt, Gather, Cook: Finding the Forgotten Feast★Seaver (For Cod and Country), head of the sustainable seafood and health initiative at the Center for Health and the Global Environment at the Harvard School of Public Health, has assembled a gorgeous illustrated encyclopedic survey of America’s evolving relationship with seafood. From abalone to wreckfish, Seaver details key characteristics of each fish, its place in culinary history, and common preparations: grouper, for example, are caught mostly in the Gulf of Mexico, and are an ‘all-purpose fish, as their pearly white meat cooperates with just about any flavors and methods of preparation.’ Occasionally he suggests recipes for classic dishes such as lobster Newburg, cioppino stew, and seafood gumbo. Seaver offers accolades to the people in the fishing industry who help bring that food to the table, and the book is accordingly laced with gorgeous photos of fishers and their vessels, massive stacks of preserved halibut and fresh shrimp, and vintage advertisements and other fishing ephemera. ‘Seafood is part of our culinary heritage,’ Seaver writes in the book’s introduction, and his argument that Americans can’t understand the present without knowledge of the past rings loud and clear in this remarkable work.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)“This lavishly illustrated reference guide to edible sea creatures from American waters answers most every question about what shows up in U.S. fish markets and how it all got there. Seaver inventories fish and shellfish from Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf sources, and even the Great Lakes. He gives place of honor to fishermen themselves, noting the deadly dangers they confront in order to feed us. He also delves into fishing techniques, distinguishing the workings of all kinds of nets, trawls, and dredges. He even gets into cultural details, such as how African Americans came to dominate commercial fishing in some places. A few iconic recipes appear, such as cioppino and clam chowder. As if the text were not in and of itself valuable, Seaver has collected both contemporary and historical photos and drawings of fishing boats, fishermen, and even ads. Some of the most intriguing are posters from war years, propagandizing Americans to eat more fish in times of meat rationing.” —Booklist (starred review)

I've been a sport fisherman for 55 years, was a commercial fisherman for 5 years. I LOVE this book! Bought 4 more for gifts.

Gave this as a gift. Folks loved it!

Great book and a great resource for people like me that love to eat fish.

Beautiful book. Made a great gift.

A great story and history

Must have for fish

Great Book

A beautifully illustrated compendium of history, ecology, and biology interspersed with recipes and cooking techniques, "American Seafood" is one of the most interesting (and most striking) books I own.The content: I keep using the word "beautiful", but that's what this book is. The writing is no exception. It's evocative, clear, professional, informative, and unique. You can't read this book without learning a great deal about history, culinary arts, ecology, and culture. Also, I can personally attest to the quality of the recipes. There aren't nearly as many as I expected, but what's in here is delicious. The aesthetics: each page is glossy and heavy-weight. The illustrations and photographs are stunning and beautifully reproduced. The cover is solid and quite heavy, with textured cloth and embossed graphics. It weighs in at a hefty 500+ pages, with the heft and weight of a college textbook. There is so much in here, and all of it is fascinating. It's beautiful enough to make a display piece, coffee table book, or a really nice gift.If you want to learn about the seafood industry, fishing history, and watery ecosystems of the United States, this is the book for you! It's incredibly interesting, beautifully bound, and unique. Highly recommended.

First off this is a very BIG HEAVY book! It is much bigger than I expected. Because the cover is designed to look like an LP, I expected it to be that size, but it is much bigger. It comes in a large display box like most higher priced Taschen volumes. The outer cover is a sort of slipcase that folds out. It is mostly a picture book with little text which is just fine. I counted at least 9 pages devoted to Sinatra, and at least 16 pages devoted to The Beatles. You expect a book this expensive to be nice, but this book is REALY, REALY nice!

Some of the vintage shots are extraordinary and Barney Hoskyns' overview is first-class. However I was sorely disappointed in the book as a whole because although it's advertised as "the official account of Capitol Records from its founding year to today", many important Capitol artists from the early days get only the briefest of mentions while a number of what I consider essential names are missing entirely. Also, a key Capitol division which was very instrumental in the early days of television is similarly forgotten.

First, I love this book. It is gorgeous -- beautifully published with high quality images. Rare photos from the archives. Different genres of music are represented. The PUBLISHER's packaging is outstanding. The book comes packaged in a custom-designed box with a plastic handle for carrying. The gold LP-looking disc on the front of the package looks like a gold-plated, regular size LP.I agree with other reviewers: it is a heavy, heavy book. Couldn't read it or view the photos without putting the book on a table or the floor and then carefully flipping through the pages. Impossible to do so in one's lap because the book is too heavy and large. It was difficult to use the index and then flip back and forth between the index and the pages when looking up a specific artist's photos and references in the book because of the large width, length, and depth of this tome.It is definitely a coffee table piece -- but is an art book at the same time that honor's the label's legacy in music. Of course, it could not possibly include all of Capitol's artists.MY BIG COMPLAINT: This is why I had to give this book only 4 stars: amazon threw it in a shipping box that was too large for this book. The shipper threw some thin brown paper over the top of the book. The special case that the publisher designed--with a carrying handle--was damaged badly during shipping. Please see photos.IF YOU WANT TO PURCHASE AN ART BOOK FROM HERE: Don't. It won't be shipped with the care it deserves. And it deserves the utmost care. This book is a treasure trove for music / record lovers.

75 Years of Capitol Records captures the essence and soul of an iconic player in the formation and continual development of the music industry. Growing up the kid of a record company exec, this brought back vivid memories of what it was like to see this world through a different lens. The imagery and stories will keep you and anyone who is fortunate enough to thumb through hours of enjoyment.

True to par, Taschen Publishing has done a terrific piece of work with outstanding color, packaging, etc IF you desire to read and admire the artists and history of Capitol Records from 1962 to the present.however, from 1942, at it's birth, to 1962 at it's prime,, the coverage is "bare bones"!This is so sad , as greats such as Johnny Mercer, Stan Kenton, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee as well as the great producer Dave Dexter are all mere footnotes !This was the Capitol "family"along with Sinatra, Martin, Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Judy Garland, June Christy, etc. No, Taschen fumbled the ball and sadly, appears to have gone for the "big bucks"!This book COULD have been truly a complete work of art with a amazing story unlike RCA Victor and Columbia, Capitol was unique in each way.In the future, please (pretty please) be COMPLETE and interview people that are knowledgeable on future subjects.Rich HargroveVirginia Beach, Virginia

I bought this for my husband whose band recorded for Capitol in the 1970s and is featured in this book. It was a birthday surprise gift for him and he was delighted. The book is extremely large and heavy but strikingly beautiful - filled with gorgeous photographs of musicians spanning the years. Some of the shots from Capitol's earlier years are magnificent. Many happy hours can be spent going through this book. Just one word of caution...it is a very, very large and heavy book. It will need a special place in your home to comfortably display it.

This is such a big book that if it slips through your hands it just might chop your feet. There are some meat in this book although it's mainly a picture book with a few essays. If your main interest is the early years of the record label, you might be disapointed. The big stars are well represented:COLE,SINATRA,MARTIN,THE BEACH BOYS,THE BEATLES. but what about JUNE CHRISTY,PEGGY LEE and so many others? It's a complete overview that goes from 1942 to our time.I would also liked more album covers on display. They only featured a few near the end.So to resume,it's not a bad book but it could have been so much better.

Capitol Records had some of the most beautiful record label designs, but scanning through this book, I didn't see a single one reproduced. That should've been a warning bell to me: Disappointments pending! The book's massive size can't mask other omissions: Short-shrift given to the great artists of the 1940s, '50s and '60s, especially Nat "King" Cole, Capitol's female vocalists and its Country music roster. A little too much space given to Frank Sinatra, 'way too much space given to no-name artists of recent vintage. Too much is missing here, and given the large gaps in label history, the size of this book just isn't warranted. You'll find it difficult to store.

From School Library Journal

Grade 10 Up—This book provides a detailed but accessible discussion of various schools of thought from philosophers and philosophical movements from the 18th century on. Starting with Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill's utilitarianism, Price includes chapters on "The Individual," "Pragmatism," "Process Philosophy," "Analytic Philosophy," "Phenomenology," and "Existentialism." Thinkers such as Nietzsche, Heidegger, and de Beauvoir receive a fair amount of biographical attention, but not enough for the book to stand as a sole source of information about them. Instead, the volume's strength is Price's ability to elucidate what can be fairly heady reading material. Black-and-white photos or illustrations of the figures break up the text, and a lengthy bibliography and solid index are appended. Readers in need of an introduction to a particular philosophy or those who want an easily understood approach to a philosopher will find it here.—Carol Fazioli, Gwynedd-Mercy College, Gwynedd Valley, PA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Price, a professor who has taught undergraduate philosophy for 35 years, introduces the most prominent philosophers and schools of thought that emerged after the Enlightenment and into the twentieth century. Along with biographies of specific individuals, each chapter includes lucid, clearly presented explanations of an intellectual movement, accompanied by numerous excerpts from both primary and secondary sources. Portraits of philosophers in crisply reproduced engravings and photographs appear frequently in the pages, as do charts and diagrams to help students visualize concepts, such as the differences between William James’ notions of Tender-Minded Rationalists and Tough-Minded Empiricists. Students will welcome the occasional, vividly described personal details (e.g., Camus grew up in a cockroach-ridden apartment) as well as the clearly presented ideas. Recommend this, also, to teachers seeking supplementary classroom sources on the subject. Chapter notes, a glossary, and suggestions for further reading close this solid title in the Understanding Philosophy series. Grades 9-12. --Gillian Engberg

Adequate for high school students with no background in the subject, though the author presents things a bit clumsily and makes inaccurate statements and generalizations at times.... In particular, the author's treatment of Kierkegaard was substandard and even misleading. Overall, it's a "reader's digest" summary of the history of philosophy, suitable for a brief overview of the subject....

This book is written for young adults and covers "contemporary" philosophy from Bentham and Mill to Sartre and Camus. The author begins with Bentham and explains how the industrial revolution began turning philosophical interests away from metaphysics and epistemology to more mundane concerns such as the happiness of individuals, which was the concern of the utilitarians' philosophical enterprise. After the utilitarians the author covers Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, specifically their intense focus on the individual; the Pragmatists James and Dewey, describing their similarities and differences; Process Philosophy, covering Bergson and Whitehead; Analytic Philosophy; Phenomenology (Husserl and Heidegger); and, finally Existentialism, including the thought of Sarte, de Beauvoir and Camus. For each philosopher author Price provides a brief biographical sketch as well as some description of the contemporary culture or pressing social issues. She does an excellent job of covering the main topics. (This is not her fault, but I have yet to find a writer who can explain Heidegger.) I am not so sure that the reading level is at times appropriate for the intended audience, perhaps only for more gifted high school upper classmen. In any event, this is a very good introduction to the most influential philosophies and philosophers of the modern period,

For high school and up. Excellent for adults as an intro to the subject. Very clear and understandable. Well-organized.
