" -Frontiers Media"A steamy new book from Petra Mason and published by Universe [at Rizzoli] brings you some of the hottest vintage male imagery from the mid-twentieth century. Called Beefcake, this incredible documentation comes complete with a foreword from drag legend Lady Bunny." -Huffington Post“You Have To Own. A lighthearted celebration of the male physique at its best, this entertaining volume features sporty and wholesome specimens championing the ideal male figure. . . with titles like “Peak of Perfection,” “Swords & Sandals,” “Dare Devils,” “Locker Room,” “Demi Gods,” “Lonely Sailor,” “Rugged & Rough,” and “Gladiator,” which you can just about imagine without even seeing (though you must see them. You MUST)!” –American Standard Time"For Petra Mason, the editor of Beefcake: 100% Rare, All Natural, published by Rizzoli, trying to track down the [history of "beefcake" photography] and, more significantly, the holders of the copyrights, turned out to be a bit like falling down a rabbit hole. . . . 'It was an amazing journey in terms of many months of research to try to find the right people.'" -Slate.com  "It is ALL good in this glamorous worship of the athletes who posed for beefcake photos when they were illegal. Today, we can honor them." -Vintage Sleaze"Celebrate the season of rising sap with Beefcake: 100: Rare, All-Natural, a splendid, over-sized collection of male pin-up photography from the 1940s through the 1970s, lovingly curated by cultural historian Petra Mason. . . . there's still a frisson of the forbidden to many of these photos, and a special allure in the models' wholesome, clean-cut appearance and lack of self-absorbed porn-star attitude." -Passport Magazine "Still, it isn't the way these men imitate Greek sculpture that makes these pictures art -- the curve of the models arms, the point of their feet, the splay of their fingers or the firmly rooted placement of their torsos -- it is the way the photos carefully craft eroticism and desire." -Edge Media Network

A terrific collection of vintage male erotica culled from "physique" magazines, mainly from the 1960's before the onslaught of "anything goes" nude photography. To those who grew up during this era where access to all-male pictures was limited to muscle mags and the like, this will be a real blast from the past and a nostalgic trip back to more "innocent" but also repressed days.Petra Mason has assembled some 200 photos, mostly full page, many in color and a very representative selection from the famous all-male studios of the day including Bruce of Los Angeles, Lon of New York, KRIS, Champion, Vulcan, Les Demi Dieux, Douglas of Detroit and Western Photography Guild. This very handsome, sturdy publication has been broken up into nine sections to emphasize a certain style. For example: "Beefcake" and "Figure Studies" mainly feature muscle guys such as Steve Reeves and Larry Scott, whereas "Swords and Sandals". "Cowboys and Indians" and "Duals in the Sun" tend to display the more whimsical storytelling/fantasy images of the particular studio.Nothing too risqué here. Remember these were the days before erections and sex scenes became the norm. But there are plenty of awesome men displaying their wares in a wide variety of full frontal poses, ass shots and the favourite prop of the day, the posing pouch. The closest to interaction between the models are some quaint wrestling exhibitions and dual physique poses. There have been a host of historical physique books in recent years, many concentrating on a single studio. Even if you have these, I would still recommend this beautifully put together volume to be added to your collection.

I've began collecting reproductions of male erotica and physique photography re-issued as these kinds of coffee-table art books for the last few years and recently ordered "Beefcake" to add to the collection. It's one of the better examples of this genre and trend. The material qualities of books of this type vary considerably in terms of the paper on which images are printed, the crispness and clarity of the pictures, the layout of the pictures, e.g. whether you get many full-page pictures or several reproduced on the same page, the bindings and other aspects of the books (hard-cover vs. paperback), and much else. "Beefcake" gets high marks on all these points. It's the kind of well-made book on high quality paper that will last a lifetime and beyond if properly handled. The pictures chosen by the editor are among the better examples of physique photography I've come across. The layouts, mostly full-page images, due justice to the beauty of the models and the aesthetic vision of the photographers."Beefcake" is an especially good introduction to vintage physique photography to newcomers to the genre or anyone that might want just one good book of this type. It reproduces work from among the best-know photographers such as Lon of New York and Bruce of Los Angles, but also less-know ones like Karoll of Havana. Similarly, there are models like Larry Scott who were champion body-builders when they posed for images here as well as any number of young men whose virility and beauty would be lost to history had it not been captured in these pictures. "Beefcake" also introduces readers to the variations within the genre of physique photography from the classicism of its early decades (my particular favorite) to the pop-culture inspired sexy kitch of the 1970s. The editor's introduction to the photographers and these sub-genres, and the historical evolution that produced them, is likewise interesting and informative. This is an excellent example of this trend of reviving an art-form that was nearly destroyed by legal persecution and reactionary social values, and a great introduction to it for those who might want to check it out for the first time.

If you admire the male body and its "vintage" version from the late 40's through the 60's then this book is a must have for you coffee book collection!

Great book to look how male photography took place in the early years. A wonderful way to create vintage looks today

My favorite coffee table book

Hands down, new favorite coffee table book. The era of male pin ups that are included are all stunning. The forward by Lady Bunny is a hoot. Great find!

Wow! excellent purchase I'm very Satisfied with the purchase and the service.

Great pictures. Very enjoyable.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of March 2016: In 1980, more than a thousand feet disappeared from the top of Mt. St Helens in a moment of stunning power, decapitating the mountain and leveling miles of old growth forest in a shockwave of boiling ash. 57 lives we lost within minutes, and yet the disaster didn't come without warning: the prior two months saw the volcano awaken in a series of earthquakes, ash plumes, and a massive, growing bulge on the north face looming ominously over Spirit Lake and the valleys below. Why was anyone there at all? Steve Olson's Eruption examines the forces at work--volcanic, economic, political, and historical--to tell a story at both geologic and human scales, documenting in thrilling fashion the demise of an iconic landscape as well as those who witnessed it: who they were, why they were there, and what they experienced when the earth opened and the sky fell. --Jon Foro

Review

“As Steve Olson reminds us in his vividly reported new history . . . what happened on May 18, 1980, in the primordial thickets of the Pacific Northwest, was an enormous, multi-faceted event. . . This engaging book maneuvers deftly along the way toward impact.” - Mark Damsker, USA Today“Olson intercuts stories of victims including David Johnston, the volcanologist who was monitoring the explosion, with an account of its impact on science―such as popularizing the use of lidar. With 1,500 potentially active volcanoes worldwide, this is an urgent reminder of the need for advances in the field.” - Nature“In Mr. Olson’s telling, [the survivors’] stories read like urgent fiction….These vignettes lend a human face to an event that has become associated largely with geology.” - Michael O'Donnell, Wall Street Journal“In his evocative and convincing new book, author Steve Olson reveals that the eruption―the most powerful natural disaster to ever strike the US―is much more than a horror show.…He has a bigger picture in mind, one of the eruption’s role as a touchstone for an evolving society and natural world.” - Randy Dotinga, Christian Science Monitor“Olson brings cinematic structure to descriptions of the events surrounding the eruption of Mount St. Helens….[A] detailed and human-centered look at a terrible disaster.” - Publisher's Weekly“A first-class, meticulously crafted piece of reportage that is as exciting as it is informative―and will long stand as a classic of descriptive narrative of the biggest American volcanic eruption of all our lifetimes―or so we all hope!” - Simon Winchester, author of Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded“Olson and his truly groundbreaking Eruption join a rarefied pantheon, where readers can come to understand the most dramatic geological event of our time. This book, as welcome as it is amazing in the depth of its background and the strength of its storytelling, will stand as a stirring and stilling accomplishment.” - Robert Michael Pyle, author of Wintergreen: Rambles in a Ravaged Land and Where Bigfoot Walks: Crossing the Dark Divide

"Eruption" by Steve Olson brought back many vivid memories. In 1980 my family and I lived in Yakima, about 80 miles northeast of Mt. St. Helens. That Sunday morning (our 12th wedding anniversary) the blackest cloud I have ever seen descended on our area turning day into night. Most frustrating was the absence of any survival information. Was the ash toxic? What about our outdoor animals? How long would it last? The radio didn't help and there was no 24/7 cable news. For lack of anything else to do, we filled a bath tub with water. House guests from Seattle, a three hour drive away, finally left Monday bypassing the ash cloud in a 7 hour roundabout trip through Portland. I wrote a magazine article about how one of our local hospitals coped with the ash and difficulty of staffers in getting to work. Our only casualty was a Samoyed dog that refused to come into the crowded house at the height of the ash fall. She later developed a severe cough and was diagnosed with silicosis of the lungs from inhaling the ash. She had to be euthanized. Almost 36 years later we are reminded of that day whenever we encounter an ash layer a few inches down when planting a tree or flowers.

I had a lot of thoughts/emotions throughout this generally awesome book:~Excitement to read it. I visited the remains of Mt. St. Helens when I was 9. I periodically love volcanoes.~Frustration. Over 50 of the first 139 pages are backstory on the Weyerhaeuser family/company for the past 100 years, and the very in-depth history of the forest service. Both could have been done in 5 or 10 imo)~Incredulity. The mountain developed a rapidly (and constantly) growing bulge on its side for weeks leading up to the explosion but very few seemed to recognize the severity or significance of this... Olson put it best in regards to lessons learned at Mt. St. Helens: "No one will ever again blithely and knowingly watch the side of a volcano bulge out like a balloon ready to pop and expect to outrun the ensuing catastrophe." -p232~Suspense. Olson took the timeline back and forth, both within the almost 2 months of activity leading up to the eruption and the personal stories of some of those affected by the blast.~Impatience. Olson took the timeline back and forth A LOT in the first half of the book.~Suspense (again) and mounting dread. He started referring to certain people in the past tense, and as I had not memorized the list of those who died before reading this the deaths and survivals were genuinely surprising to me.*giggle*"'It was like going to the land of Mordor,' said one logger." -p203~Validation. Take that, loggers! Clearly leaving the downed trees where they lay would result in faster recovery/renewal of the scorched surroundings! I kind of wanted to shout at the corporate interests in their haste to "not waste" the trees to rot. Not-at-all-shockingly, "The habitats that have recovered fastest are those that were left in disarray." -237About halfway through I was also kind of overwhelmed with just pure interest in the story and enjoyment of Olson's writing. I felt that wonderful compulsion to keep reading and ignore everything else to see how it all turns out (spoiler alert, the volcano explodes).Olson does a great job of creating a compelling narrative around this recent historical event and I really liked the book, learned a lot about volcanoes (now I want to be a volcanologist), and came to care for some of the real people highlighted in the personal stories. He blends political maneuvering, history and a natural disaster, personal stories, conservation hot-topics, and individual family histories and creates a genuinely enjoyable read. I have been talking about this book with my friends and family far more than I expected.Because I can't just be happy, if I had to give one more very minor complaint (which doesn't really count as a complaint, but more a back-handed compliment) it is that it did not contain more stories about the people who were near the mountain, both the survivors and those who died. Olson does such a fantastic job with most of those he does include that I found myself wanting to know more. Along those same lines, I would have loved to have the end of the book provide more information about those who survived and their lives since. I know not everyone will want to share any of that (I can't begin to imagine how traumatic that was), but as a reader I am sorry Eruption did not include at least footnotes on more of the people it focused on in the earlier parts of the books. Most impressively, he somehow created a text about a volcano that is both informative and accessible --something that I have recently (today) discovered to be VERY rare.I received an advance copy of this book as part of the Goodreads Giveaways program.

This is a very good book. The research is exhaustive, and the author appears to have gone to considerable lengths to talk to survivors, witnesses, scientists, policy makers and others who lived through the event and helped to shape the response. It's been 35 years since the blast, so Mr. Olson seized the opportunity to make sure the story was told. The book, aside from its dramatic re-telling of the events leading up the blast, and its aftermath, is very relevant for today. It provides insight and perspective on land use and the economic issues surrounding the blast. If you read the Wikipedia entry on Mount St. Helens, it makes it seem as if government did a lot to protect lives. But this book provides an entirely different accounting and is very critical of the state government's response. It illustrates the tensions between big business and government over access restrictions. He explains -- in a very compelling way -- how the death toll could have been substantially higher had it not been for the timing of the volcano blast. Fundamentally, this is a story about hubris. You can apply to response to the volcano's threat to response the leadership makes today to all kinds of threats. Climate change, in particular, came to mind. The land use history and the Washington politics around it foreshadows the strident arguments being made out West today. The history of Weyerhaeuser at the start of the book runs, perhaps, a bit long but it's easy enough to read quickly through it to get the heart of the story. And the heart of the story is a very, very good read.

As far as disaster stories go, it's hard to get much more awe-inspiring than volcanic eruptions, yet I found myself skimming whole sections of "Eruption" despite the subject matter. Instead of delving deeper into the human tragedy, or the science of volcanic eruptions, nearly a third of the book is given to dry, vaguely interesting histories of the forest service and the Weyerhaeuser logging corporation. Having just finished "A Wall of White" (the account of a contemporaneous avalanche disaster in the Sierras, and an absolute page-turner) I expected such a slim volume about an even more dramatic cataclysm to hold me fast from start to finish. It did not, despite the cinematic heights of hubris, ignorance, and bravery its cast of characters display. A missed opportunity.

This book should be titled Stuff White Elitist Like because I know plenty of white people from small town America and from the suburbs who do not fit into these categories. This is really a look at those west and east coast Caucasians who live very hipster lives. White elitists in this book go to good liberal schools, cannot pass a Starbucks, and have incredibly gifted children (or at least think so), love skiing and snowboarding and kayaking, talk about their study abroad and their year off to explore Europe backpacking. Oh, and they adore microbreweries and long for their house by the water and their fond memories of grad school and how wonderful New York City and Portland are. They wear New Balance shoes, expensive yoga pants and vintage t-shirts too. They cannot get enough of indie music and obscure foreign films and documentaries. They don’t own a TV but they do so love to binge on Netflix important shows like Madmen, Six Feet Under and Arrested Development. That is white elitist culture in a nutshell. Are there some truths, yeah for the hipster millennials you can find some of these pretensions, although there is nothing wrong with 80’s music (which the author claims, the white culture loves and brunch too). There is humor in these observations but also a heck of a lot of stereotyping too. The people he stereotypes though are city dwellers who live in uber chic lofts and are liberal thinkers and voters. Still this is just a small snapshot of a very distinct subculture (one the author makes fun of with some funny writing) but still not in any way like the vast majority of Caucasians in this country.

I haven't made up my mind if I think this book is racist or not. If a white person was writing such a book about a person of color would it be received as simply amusing or offensive? That being said, there are some pretty funny things in the book.

I loved this book. It is a very tongue-in-cheek and insightful study of young college graduates in the USA.My only quibble: The term "White People" is misleading, because this book is about only a sector of whites (college-educated liberals under the age of about 35), not all of them. But the book does a terrific job at describing that sector.

I have an Italian first name, a Japanese last name, a blue eyed blond Danish mother and a dark as espresso beans Haitian father; who would think this eclectic mix would have me wind up with such an affinity for stuff white people like? This book was a hilarious look in the mirror... well, a look in my coffee cup - fair trade, organic latte. A look in my kitchen cupboards - yup, *seven* kinds of salt in there. Since I am bi-racial, I guess it is fitting though that only fifty percent of the "stuff" applied to me.Being a born and bred New Yorker I think there is a certain amount of familiarity with city life required to get the tongue-in-cheekyness humor of this book. Living in Southern Utah now, I can't imagine some of my new friends and neighbors appreciating this particular brand seemingly ironic humor.Recommended for those with a huge funny bone. Or white hipsters.

Fun and wise. I hope to see books soon like this on Asians and Blacks.

This book was incredibly helpful. Before reading it, I was never really sure if I was doing my duty as a white American by acting like it. Thanks to this book, I now have a helpful checklist to avoid becoming, as Christian Lander puts it, "the wrong type of white person."If you want to learn more about white people, or if you're curious if you qualify as a white person, pick this one up.

Saw this book at a store, didn't buy it and came home to order it! I read other negative reviews that seemed to be from those that can't laugh at themselves. Ignore those, and enjoy the truth that exists in all aspects of society. It is really OK to be white, black, or any other color you might want to claim. There is much tongue in cheek humor. Sit back, enjoy it and take pride in which ever ethnic group you come from! Life it too short to be upset at whatever ethnic group God chose for you. Take pride in your humanness and forget the color of your skin or where you came from (and had not a bit of control!)

This book is down right funny. It does get a bit repetitive and predictable at times, but, that doesn't stop it from being one of the funniest and most accurate books. The book is more geared specifically towards a type of white person, but everybody that's white can find an entry or two about themselves or a friend/family member and have a good laugh. When you read the poor reviews, it's pretty obvious why they don't find it funny - the book is talking about exactly those type of people. You'll see what I mean when you read the book and then read the negative reviews. This is not a sit and read at once type of book - it's much better and much more comical if you read an entry or two per day

From the Inside Flap

When bombarded with X-rays, solid materials produce distinct scattering patterns similar to fingerprints. X-ray powder diffraction is a technique used to fingerprint solid samples, which are then identified and cataloged for future use-much the way the FBI keeps fingerprints on file. The current database of some 70,000 material prints has been put to a broad range of uses, from the analysis of moon rocks to testing drugs for purity. Introduction to X-ray Powder Diffractometry fully updates the achievements in the field over the past fifteen years and provides a much-needed explanation of the state-of-the-art techniques involved in characterizing materials. It covers the latest instruments and methods, with an emphasis on the fundamentals of the diffractometer, its components, alignment, calibration, and automation. The first three chapters outline diffraction theory in clear language, accessible to both students and professionals in chemistry, physics, geology, and materials science. The book's middle chapters describe the instrumentation and procedures used in X-ray diffraction, including X-ray sources, X-ray detection, and production of monochromatic radiation. The chapter devoted to instrument design and calibration is followed by an examination of specimen preparation methods, data collection, and reduction. The final two chapters provide in-depth discussions of qualitative and quantitative analysis. While the material is presented in an orderly progression, beginning with basic concepts and moving on to more complex material, each chapter stands on its own and can be studied independently or used as a professional reference. More than 230 illustrations and tables demonstrate techniques and clarify complex material. Self-contained, timely, and user-friendly, Introduction to X-ray Powder Diffractometry is an enormously useful text and professional reference for analytical chemists, physicists, geologists and materials scientists, and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in materials science and analytical chemistry.

This book provides an introduction to powder diffraction theory as well as a comprehensive list of everything involved with the actual diffractometer. This is not just a theory book nor a technical manual. It describes clearly all the factors involved in the production of x-rays, the workings of motors and detectors to the reasons for using divergence slits as well as the principles of phase identification and quantitative analysis. It is a great book for someone who will be using a diffractometer for the first time and will be doing the work themselves. This is not a crystallography text. It is more a handbook of practical applied powder diffraction. Well worth the money.

I would suggest reading this book if you want to learn about powder XRD technique. This book is really good...

Disclaimer: I have been friends with Andrew for a long time. We lost touch about 12 years ago and then we reconnected on Facebook in late 2009 - just months after Andrew had surfaced from his medical crisis, as I would later discover. It was business as usual discussing music, dogs, guitar, life, etc., until I read read posts by Andrew discussing the details of the crisis. Needless to say, I had no idea that this had happened and was a bit shocked and reminded just how tenuous the thread between life and death can be.I am glad that his wife Wendy on a whim decided to see if music could get through to Andrew during the crisis. Fate had it that the piece Andrew heard on his iPod when she put the earbud in Andrew's ear during the crisis had strong associations in his life, and surprisingly - or not so really! - it brought him back to this world. That being said, this book not only presents the gripping drama surrounding the crisis, it also provides a very deep background on the history of the effects of music on the brain, with Andrew's experiences as a medical musician being the center of focus. It is presented in prose worthy of the late Oliver Sacks, but uniquely in Andrew's voice. This book is also testament to how associations to music embedded in one's mind can be extremely powerful. My only complaint was that the book was far too short! I sincerely hope Andrew continues his exploration into the connection between the brain and music, since this is fertile ground in terms of groundbreaking research across cultural barriers.

Waking the Spirit is simply wonderful! It’s the perfect antidote to today’s depressing political scene, is full of hope, and inspirational. Andrew Schulman is a professional guitarist who finds himself in an induced coma in the SICU at Beth Israel Hospital in New York, the most desperately ill patient in the unit. As each hour elapses, he worsens and is given almost no chance of survival…..until his wife reaches into her handbag and finds his iPod programmed with his favorite music, beginning with Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion, his most treasured favorite. From the moment the ear buds relay Bach’s music to him, his condition begins to improve. He....and the medical staff in the SICU....credit music with saving his life and to give thanks, Andrew returns to the unit at Beth Israel to become a medical musician and to play for both patients and staff 3 days a week. In Waking the Spirit he recounts his experiences there and the life changing effect it has had upon him, helping his healing continue to this day. In the book’s afterward, Dr. Marvin A. McMillen continues with his own personal story, reinforcing Andrew’s account. There was a time when music was considered unorthodox medicine, but that is changing, as Schulman, McMillan and the other doctors who comment illustrate. Andrew’s story was the subject of a PBS feature which you might want to watch via youTube. The highest of recommendations.

I loved this book. Andrew is a musician, but he is also a poet of the human soul. He opened up an world for me that made me proud to me be human. A world where Music can reach places in the brain and the heart of a comatose patient and in fortunate cases give them the will and the path to live.I found some of the music that he referenced including Bernstein's recording of the St. Matthew Passion and understood Andrew’s world. I had drifted away from music and was reminded how much it had touched me in the past. I am fortunately healthy but perhaps Andrew has also brought music back into my life. A beautiful book, a wonderful author - with luck you will be touched and moved as I was.

This is an excellent book showing just how our brains work even when we are unconscious and what power music has over our well-being. I wish every medical worker was fully trained in this reality. Perhaps there would be fewer adverse reactions caused by physicians & surgeons listening to their own kind of music while performing their treatments. The music preferred by the patient should be the primary consideration. If a surgeon needs to listen to hard rock in order to perform his or her surgical procedures, I want to know that beforehand so I can find a different surgeon!

I do this kind of work myself and am always interested in learning of another person's experience with it. So much of this type of activity, even with training, seems to be based on intuition and this author has developed his intuition to a very high degree, perhaps as a result of his own experiences with serious health issues (which are detailed in the book). I'm sure many people with my own interest will read this book but I would really recommend it for anybody in the medical field.

This book was recommended by a friend who does dance therapy. The author was in the ICU, critically ill, and finally his wife played a very moving piece of music and it prompted his recovery. After that, he returned to the ICU weekly to play for patients. It was well-written and was very interesting from a medical standpoint (I'm a physician) as well as from the human standpoint. Very moving and informational at the same time.

I love this book for so many reasons. I had already discovered the power of music when I started to use it during meditations (Composer ~ Audiomachine). I started to feel much better but also some physical issues I had started to heal. This book was a great validation to the healing power of music. The story was so fascinating. Each scene in the book was not only interesting but throughout the book, you learned so much. Definitely a great read, an inspiring story and wonderfully written!

From the minute I started reading this book I could not put it down. With many friends in the medical field who are also musicians I felt obliged to send multiple copies around the country. The nerd in all of us is sated by the references to studies that provide scientific evidence of what Mr. Schulman experiences regularly in the ICU. This book will make the perfect gift for anyone working in an ICU anywhere. It should not be taken lightly! Kudos to Mr. Schulman and his team for bringing this information to the main stream and making it so readable and interesting for the layman.

I read this book in hardcopy when first published, and just finished listening to the Audible version. My takeaway is that this is a really interesting biography marred only slightly by the writer’s tendency to sometimes insert too much of his own personality and opinions into what appear to otherwise be accurate reporting of historical events. For anyone who was a kid in the 70s and remembers the cultural phenomenon that was Evel Knievel, this biography offers an exhaustive look inside how that personage was created, and the forces that ultimately lead to the character’s downfall.A few reviews on this site accuse the book of being a character assassination. I don’t agree with that. Most of the events described have a ring of well researched truth. The only problem I had is that the writer tends to phrase things in a slightly snarky way, poking fun at Knievel’s expense. He may in fact be an easy target but that constant hint of sarcasm in the telling of events makes the tale seem a little less unbiased than it would have otherwise. The author also, while generally writing in a very engaging and lively style, has a tendency to insert himself into the narrative through an over use of cutesy phrasing. For example, when recounting a personal event in Evel’s life, he will write along these lines “Maybe he was at a bar in Phoenix. Maybe someplace else.” On the surface that sounds like sloppy research, however I got the feeling the author knew exactly where events happened, and was trying to make the point that it was a repeated behavior that could have happened anywhere. A writing device like that is fine used once. In this book it is used over, and over, and over - to the point I found it a little disruptive to the narrative. The author clearly knows where events happened (or should know).Final note: this book is packed with fantastic research, anecdotes and information. But even at its great length it doesn’t have everything I remember about Evel simply from being alive in the 1970s. Some examples of things I remember that were not mentioned include a proposed weekly half hour prime time fictional TV show, with an actor playing Evel who would be involved in weekly adventures and jumps. This got as far as being cast and a pilot being made. I don’t know if the film still exists but I remember seeing the pilot broadcast on the network, probably in the summer of 1975, as part of a series of unsold TV pilots they aired once to fill space that summer. Not in the book but worth mentioning is also the Saturday morning cartoon “Devlin” which was clearly inspired by Evel Knievel, and what Evel thought about it. And finally, how the top rated TV show Happy Days used Fonzie to parody Knievel’s exploits, not once but twice. Best remembered today is Fonzie’s infamous shark jump. But prior to that, there was a two part Happy Days where Fonzie tried to set a world record by jumping his motorcycle over garbage cans. In true Knievel style he cleared the cans but crashed on the landing ramp and was hospitalized. And in a wicked spot-on Knievel parody, when the father on Happy Days offers to drive the injured Fonz to the hospital in the family station wagon, Fonzie says (I am paraphrasing from a 40 year old memory of the original broadcast): “No, not in a station wagon. I want to go in an ambulance, with flashing lights, and big windows so I can wave to my fans...”

This book was very well written. Even when it got into the technical description and Engineering of things it was still easy to follow and still kept the reader's interest. This is a must-have for everybody who loved Evel Knievel. Makes you want to go back and revisit the 70s for sure.

If Evel was half as bad as described here (there are two sides to every story), then he was still about six clicks beyond textbook narcissist. Except for the pain and strife he caused those close to him, I don't begrudge him this. To do what he did a person has to be a little, no, ALOT whacked. I guess in the measure of a life you have to look at the enjoyment he brought to the larger audience who never met him personally. We spent many hours as kids jumping our banana-seated, monkey-barred bicycles, trying to emulate the version of Evel we'd see that afternoon on Wide World of Sports. Those were golden days. Thank you Leigh Montville for writing a splendid book that allows us to revisit that era.

This book tells about the famous daredevil, Evel Knievel. And it is every bit as colorful, as the man you would see on TV performing some of his death defying tricks. It was entertaining at times and insightful! Warning: There is a lot of obscenity

This is one of the BEST biographies I have ever read, and I've read many. You do not have to be a sports fan or a fan of Evel Knievel. It was entertaining and fascinating, from beginning to end, which I think is rare in a biography. Better than biographies of Jim Morrison or Mick Jagger, or just about any entertainer. What surprised me were the stories from his early days, before he became famous, which can sometimes make the beginning of a story kind of drag, but the whole book was fascinating. Couldn't put it down. Whether you loved or hated him, he was truly an American original. Leigh Montville tells a story like nobody else can.

Having lived during and witnessing Evel's glory days on ABC's Wide World of Sports, his bizarro attempt with bizarro attention given to it to jump the Snake River Canyon and also seeing his sad and quick fall from celebrity to broke background noise I found this book a great read. The author calls it the way I remember it with lots of fleshing out and interesting stories to paint a very complete picture of Mr Robert "Evel" Knievel.Though not explicitly asked of the reader, I believe this book requests the contemplation of what such a person/act like Knievel rising to such fame says about American society and culture. Unless I'm over analyzing but I dont think I am.My only quibble? How can the tale of Evel jumping over a tank of sharks be told, with no mention of the greatest shark jumper of them all (The Fonz) being made?!?!?!

This is a surprisingly well presented tale about one of Butte's strange people. Leigh Montville has fashioned a really interesting tale about the life of Kneivel. Little seems to have been invented to make the book such a good read. I recognize the 50's, 60's in Butte and only just discovered the rest of Evel's adventures in the wider world. I enjoyed this presentation and was surprised to learn that I did.A friend mentioned one name in this book, moments later Amazon had found the book and loaded it to my Kindle. It is a good read!

Great read that tells much of not just the daredevil and public persona, but also of the man behind the scenes.
