We read this book every night. It is great for learning to count. My husband read the book initially and thought that the ladybugs died so he stopped a few pages in (It starts at 10 and counts down). If you make it to the end, all the butterflies come back together, so once I read it cover to cover and saw that, it was never a problem for us. Good thing too because it is one of my daughter's favorite books.

I have twin boys, and I bought them this book when they were about 10 months old. Here we are four months later, and I just bought a second book because they read the other one to pieces!! It was starting to look like a Frankenstein of torn pages and packaging tape, so I decided it was time to replace it. This was definitely their FAVORITE book, and believe me they had plenty to choose from.Upon my first reading, I remember thinking "Wow, this is incredibly morbid for a children's book.." because it seemed like the ladybugs were getting eaten, drowned, etc. However (spoiler alert, ha ha) they were fine in the end.Despite the fact that it is now in pieces, this is actually a pretty well-made book. It took quite awhile for them to tear it up, and that's saying something there. The ladybugs are attached to a larger plastic piece which is then glued in between the pages, ensuring that it won't be easily removed. The pages themselves are doubled card stock, with a glossy finish to protect them from drool.My boys loved touching all the ladybugs, and feeling that there were fewer as the book progressed. They also absolutely loved the high-color illustrations, and would frequently just sit there by themselves, paging through the book and looking at the pictures. For some reason, they would always laugh when we got to the picture of the fish, and I would start to point out the eyes, lips, etc.This is also a great book to make animal noises to (if your kids like that sort of thing) since it has a bee, bird, etc. Your child is pretty much guaranteed to love this book!

Whenever I visited them, my grandsons always ran to my book bag first to be sure I brought this book for them to look at. I would bring books to read to them, but this was their favorite--so I got one for them for Christmas. They are 3 and 4 yrs old, and love to use the bugs to count, as well as to look for the the other animals that interact with them. (Their cousins love it too!)

My one-year-old son pulls this book off the shelf at every opportunity. The pages are stiffer than paper but not as thick as a board book, so it's more like a big-boy book but he can still turn the pages himself.I like the way this book teaches counting but in a more subtle way than some of the all-out counting books that simply show "one cat, two socks," etc. It's an enjoyable, rhyming story that just happens to have numbers.To clarify, the nine animals that come along in the book are NOT predators, as another reviewer said they were. There is not just ONE ladybug that makes it home safely. They ALL are reunited at home on the last page of the book. The way I understand the book is that the 10 ladybugs are on an outing, and each one leaves the group with an animal friend (butterfly, caterpillar, etc.) who later takes him / her back home. Are the ladybugs lost and needing help to find their way home? Are they playing with the other animals and then eventually they all go home for supper? I don't have this answer. But please don't think that this book is a nature lesson about the food chain. No ladybugs are harmed in the reading of this book!

My daughter had an old copy of this book and loved it! She loves it enough that the book started falling apart. I ordered this and was pleased that it arrived in great addition. The story is cute and don't be alarmed, the lady bugs arrive safely at home!

This is an excellent book that promotes number sense and is simply enjoyable to read! The rhyming flows well and does not feel forced. Counting down from ten, each page features a number presented in both word form and standard form as part of the story. In addition, you can count the number of ladybugs each time you turn the page. By presenting the number in multiple ways, it really helps to build number sense for young children. I highly recommend this book. We've had it for two years, and my daughter still loves it!

An excellent 0-3 year old kids book. I have hundreds of kids book, 10LLB's is on my all time favorite list. I often include a copy in birthday presents and babyshower bags.I'm reviewing my third copy of the book, turns out 2 year olds are overly curious as to the origins of lady buys and dissect the books to discover all the hidden secrets.

My daughter started reading this book at daycare. She would bring it to me when I picked her up, so I bought a copy for home. It really encourages early recognition of numbers, my daughter just turned 2 and loves to count the ladybugs in this book

I found about 2/3 of the prompts and exercises useful in my own work the first time through, which is a very good average for me. I mostly read it wishing I'd had it when I taught Introductory Creative Writing; it would be an excellent textbook. Most of the exercises would challenge beginners to do their best work, and it's really refreshing to see a book on poetry not insist that everyone's a perfect and special flower of a poet, and that every poem is brilliant simply because it exists. The idea that poetry can be appallingly bad -- and that writing said appalling poetry can be a step in development rather than an automatic death sentence to someone's hopes of writing -- should be presented to beginners as soon as possible. The chapter "Awful Poems" is worth the price of admission on its own because of how well it does just that...then follows up by showing how to recognize bad poetry and what can be done about it.

In the Palm of Your Hand: The Poet’s Portable Workshop by Steve Kowit is a guidebook about poetry with an abundance of helpful, creative ideas on how to write poems.The chapter about line breaks presents a myriad of strategies for arranging lines, including ending the line in the middle of a phrase to defy the reader’s expectations, adding stanza breaks to play with duration, adding a line break mid sentiment to create tension, and intentionally trying to create a certain shape on the page. The chapter also discusses the flexibility of how one may chose to do line breaks, including long, short, or a mixture of the two.There is also a chapter about writing poems that reinvent or add layers to well-established mythical characters. This chapter includes reimaginings of Hansel and Gretel, Lot’s wife from the Bible, and a particularly evil version of Smokey the Bear. The chapter talks about how flipping expectations is a great way to build upon established characters.

I LOVE this book! It has made all the difference in my attempts to write and understand poetry. A friend in my MFA program (I was studying fiction) recommended it, and I am so glad he did. I love writing fiction and nonfiction, but poetry always scared me. This book made it fun and approachable, yet it is an academic book that I will treasure always. Highly recommend!

As a creative writing teacher to high school students, this book is an essential tool! It's been hard for me to find texts on the art of writing that are simple enough for the beginning student, yet complex enough to really get at the complexity of writing. The prose and exercises in this little book are easily adaptable to a mixed-ability and writing-interest-level class.

Over the past five years I've been facilitating an independent writers' workshop in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with a group of marvelous writers who also happen to be excellent respondents to other people's writing. We've had visiting poets and used various texts. Hands down, In the Palm of Your Hand is the best of all the books we've used in the group. It is a well-written how-to book with intelligent and heart-felt observations and information about poetry, marvelous example poems, and inspiring exercises for beginning to advanced poets. I was sad to learn of the recent death of the book's author, Steve Kowit. We're grateful that he gave us this marvelous book.

The only downside is that it has all these do's and don'ts that end up contradicting themselves in different parts of the book. I believe that if you want to write poetry there should be no rules.

This book came to me as an excersize work book. I started it and realized that he was reaching a goal with the way he handled the teachings. His way of explaining how a style was built from the bottome up and the steps, as in one chapter after another, made creating so easy.I stuck to each and every lesson and poem assignment. If it meant research, I took a trip to the library. An adventure in trying different styles! I would put my mind, body and soul into what I would put on paper. We all know that writers have to write.Some of my old poems were redone with his ideas. My friends saw my revised poems and went "Oh WOW! And this is from the studies from this book?" A compliment for me and applause for his lessons.I highly suggest any poet, beginner, intermediate or advanced, to do read this book. AND I would suggest going back and redoing the exercises from the start. It was from my open-mindedness and my perserverance that would have me do each exercise. It wasn't work anymore, it was fun!!

The "Town Musicians" of Bremen, was written originally in German by the brothers Grimm; and is here translated by Anthea Bell, with illustrations by Lisbeth Zwerger.... A story concerning a group of elderly animals who are no longer wanted (!) at their old residences; and consequently decide to leave for Bremen, and become musicians there. But that never actually occurs, as Providence intervenes, and something far more wonderful happens. Our fable does involve the concept of cruelty, but I suggest in a gentle and oblique fashion, as animals are spoken of, in an allegorical manner. Callosity, severity, and thoughtlessness are in fact something of human existence, and the psyche; and something our children will and must, unfortunately, face in their lives. This book is beautifully illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger, and her depiction of the pathos of the parable, and the animals in particular, is excellent! Yet, I do agree with another reviewer here on Amazon, who pointed out that her drawings of architectural objects, and in particular the house, was not as fine as other illustrators. But true; nonetheless, ours is a chidrens' story, and on the more important issues, the animals, Ms. Zwerger scores very highly. I consequently recommend this beautiful rendition of the Brothers Grimm fable; it is a wonderful way to introduce our young to the reality of the world, morality and justice, and even Providence and Redemption! This parable, far from what some have criticized as being 'too cruel', and 'harsh', actually is quite moral, and elucidates very nicely the compassion, and understanding, we should all have amongst each other.

This is a Grimm's tale about a donkey, dog, cat and rooster who must all leave home. They are all older and have no use to their humans anymore. They meet up as they are running away and start traveling to Bremen. The illustrations are lovely, and it's a charming story. Highly recommended for adult or child.

This is another faithfully translated edition of the classic Bremen Town fairy tale. Lisbeth Zwerger, in her inimitable style, illustrates the old story using images from more contemporary scenes, with the abstract, dreamlike quality that characterizes much of her work. Anthea Bell's translation is vivid and clear, and the story moves itself along as the four animals set out on the road together seeking a new destiny, then happen upon a group of robbers in a forest house and devise a way to use the robbers' own fears against them. The story contains pathos, drama, humor, and a deeply moral ending as four faithful creatures, having been denied their place after lives of faithful service, find a way to take ill-gotten gains away from those who manifestly do not deserve them. It's been loved for over a century, for good reason, and this edition is a good choice to perpetuate it: as the closing line says: "The last man to tell this tale isn't dead yet." It's best suited for a preschool or elementary audience.

I am a huge fan of Lizbeth Zwerger, the illustrator of this traditional fairy tale. Technically, her work is extraordinary, but it is the magic she brings to every book she illustrates that lures me in every time. From The Wizard of Oz to Alice in Wonderland, Zwerger brings something new to even the most familiar children's stories. To me, her illustrations are works of art, but they are never cute and fuzzy. They may have more appeal for grown-ups or older children.

He does well in avoiding delving into persuasion level issues pertaining to the ordo salutis, millennial views, church governance, etc., choosing to focus instead on what this early creed universally affirms about faith, Jesus, the cross, the Spirit, the church, the last things, etc. Highlights include: the clarity with which Bird explains the mystery of the Trinity (ch. 4), his argument as to why Jesus' descent to the realm of the dead is important, and his explanation of this descent (ch. 10), his treatment on the significance of Jesus' ascension (ch. 11), and his explanation of salvation, the Christian hope, and the last things (ch. 14). The latter three highlights are sure to challenge the preconceptions of many Christians on these matters. Ultimately, this book can be utilized across denominational lines.Overall, I would highly recommend What Christians Out to Believe to someone who is interested in gaining a basic understanding of Christian doctrine due to its simple organization, readability, and concise depth of content.

This book is such an interesting blend of history, theology, psychology, humor and just plain scriptural references. I found myself chuckling out loud in a few places as Mr. Bird's witty and sometimes sarcastic tone helped provide a little relief from an intense information overload. I have a couple of friends at a non-denominational church who are very NON-creedal, and I had to laugh when Mr. Bird points out the obvious...most churches have their "Statement of Faith" and hello? Guess what that amounts to...? Yep! A creed! So they have a creed to show that they are against creeds...Brilliant! ha haI grew up with the Apostles' Creed, but I loved this rich, in depth, historical and scriptural investigation of it, line by line. There are so many works that Mr. Bird suggests as follow up or for increased attention in certain aspects, and they could keep us reading for a long time!Personally I love Mr. Bird's writing style as he presents material on an academic level in one moment and then a very flippant and funny way the next. When he is discussing some of the heresies in the early church for example, he says, "The heretics had to be voted off the island because the truth of the gospel and the unity of the church were under threat." This pop culture reference to Survivor is one of those moments where he can very quickly, and with great wit, suddenly illustrate a point in a very mainstream and understandable way.I found it refreshing to know that many mainstream churches ARE creedal and I loved diving into the Apostles' Creed line by line! I would not call this a light read, in spite of Mr. Bird's humor, the content of this book is very thought-provoking and it felt like an intense lesson of sorts, with LOTS of references for follow up study!

I just finished "There There", by Tommy Orange and I’m so glad to have read it - though sometimes it was difficult:This book will make you sad - read it anyway.This book will make you mad - read it anyway.This book will remind you of the lies we were taught as children - read it to remember.This book will remind you not to tell those lies anymore - read it to know the truth.This book will make you smile – know hope.This book will ruin Thanksgiving for you - read it so you can re-think your future Thanksgivings."There There", (the title referring to an out-of-context quote by Gertrude Stein about Oakland, CA) is fascinating, heartbreaking, frustrating and ultimately hopeful. The novel is comprised of individual, but interconnected/interrelated stories by a dozen characters; their stories and actions will culminate at the “Big Oakland Powwow”. (There are some major coincidences – but just suspend your disbelief and let it go!) The section on Dene Oxendene, somewhat mirrors the premise: Dene wants to make a documentary film of various Native Americans talking about their life experiences of living in Oakland, and that is pretty much the description of this novel – plus some mysteries and some shocking action.Summing it up best, Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield’s Mother tells her that the world is made up of stories and that they honor their people by telling their stories. And that’s how Tommy Orange honors his people, and his readers, with these transforming and redemptive stories.

This Canterbury Tales-style novel, in which a series of characters (all Native people) are introduced, and ultimately brought together at a modern Powwow, was strangely unsatisfying. Attempts to keep the characters straight made me feel as if I were suffering from attention deficit disorder; just as I gained any sense of a newly-introduced player (and any investment in his survival) the narrative switched to someone new. (Loother, we hardly knew ye.) Everyone ends up at the Powwow. There is a lot of random gunfire. Many of our new-found friends end up shot, some fatally, but we don't get to know who survives. ???However, if one steps outside the plot and listens to the voices of these wounded people, all trying to find some place to stand and build their lives, time spent with this book is not wasted.

When I first saw the title of this book, I read it as soothing words of comfort, but I had it totally wrong. Taking the famous Gertrude Stein quote "There is no there there," Tommy Orange explains that this seeming indictment of Oakland, California as a featureless hole in the landscape is not what Stein meant. Further reading of the quote proves she found her hometown unrecognizable as the place of her memory. The entirety of the United States could be classified as such, given the effects of progress perpetuated on native Americans by colonizers. Late in the book, the broken promises, actual crimes and genocide are related metaphorically through a story written by one of the characters.And what characters populate these pages. There are approximately 12 main ones, each embodying a fact of urban Native American identity. These complex relationships form a patchwork that make the outcome inevitable. There is search for family, identity and place, many feeling marginalized and invisible in the urban setting they find themselves. Earlier chapters provide character studies that present the players, their histories and motivations, so clearly the prose flows and pages fly by, followed by an almost cinematic speedup as the climax approaches.Full disclosure - I began this book several days ago employing the audible edition, but found it was too rich and full to continue that way and had to begin all over again with a print version.

What does it mean to be a Native American—often invisible in the U.S. tapestry? Documentary filmmaker Dene Oxendene, one of a dozen characters whom we meet in this book, gives his take (based on Gertrude Stein's famous quote about Oakland, "There is no there there.") He says:: “This there there. He hadn’t read Gertrude Stein beyond the quote. But for Native people in this country, all over the Americas, it’s been developed over, buried ancestral land, glass and concrete and wire and steel, unreturnable covered memory. There is no there there.”Reminiscent in ways of the movie Crash, these characters—who eventually come together in the Big Oakland Powwow—crash into each other intermittently, leaving behind sadness and often scars.There’s Jacquie Red Feather, one of the characters we get to know the most, an alcoholic who is facing the tatters of her past and on her way to her future—finally meeting her three grandsons. Her daughter Blue, whom she never met (and who has given up those boys) is fleeing an abusive marriage. The oldest of the sons, Orvil, is pulling spider legs out of his own leg wound and wrestling about what it means to be Indian. And then there are the others —Danny who creates plastic guns on a 3D printer, Edwin who loses himself in overeating, Thomas who is half-white and floundering in his life.Tommy Orange’s purpose is clear; he wants us to know that the term “Native” cannot be easily defined and, in fact, encompasses many kinds of people who share the burden of alienation, isolation and cruel history. They come to the annual Big Oakland Powow for different reasons: “The messy, dangling strands of our lives got pulled into a braid—tied to the back of everything we’ve been doing all along to get us here…we’ve been coming for years, generations, lifetimes, layered in prayer and hand-woven regalia, beaded and sewn together, feathered, braided, blessed, and cursed.”This is a major contribution to Urban Indian literature; I’ve never read anything quite like it. But it also defines all of us, as Americans, in many important ways. Tommy Orange has power to spare.

Purchased this book only a few days ago and boy, it is great! Mr. Busch lays out everything in a straight-forward and flowing manner with few sidebar editorial comments. Just the facts. I am really glad I bought this. The book size makes it so much easier to read, it lays flat, the pictures accurately depict the instructions/information, and the book is small enough to fit in my camera bag. Personally, I think it is perfect for a beginner owner. And the price! Well, for what you are getting, the price is embarrassingly low. Really a first-class enhancement of the 5D MkIII factory manual.

My first time buying one of Dave's books and I couldn't be more happier. It is packed with everything you need to know about operating the 5D3 and fits nicely in my camera bag when I go on the road. Another nice feature is the wirebound so you can be a little more rough with it and not have to worry about any glue coming loose and losing pages. The pages are high quality paper and all pictures are in color. Daves comedic insight also helps for easy reading and is nothing like the manual that comes with the camera. Dave goes into more detail than the Canon manual could ever give.

David Busch is awesome at taking complexity and making it easy to understand. I've learned to put my ego in check and be willing to ask any question that can help me be a better photographer and use this awesome camera more effectively - this book answers most questions I've had! The book is well laid out and meets the needs of both experienced and relatively inexperienced photographers alike. He put the basics in the back of the book and each chapter is complete so you can study just the areas you need to learn or brush up on!

I purchased this field guide 1 week before I purchased my camera. Wanted to start getting a feel for things and it the ground running once the camera came in.So glad I did. Enjoyed the layout and the explanations behind how/when/why many of the settings were for and how to use them.Guide fits nicely inside my camera bag and will travel with me.If you are new to the 5D Mark III as I am, then you will want to throw this into your arsenal.

The Compact Field Guide for the Canon 5D Mark 3 is a well thought out reference manual. The book is spiral bound and will lay flat on a table, leaving your hands free to make camera adjustments. It is full color, well illustrated, larger and more durable than the Canon supplied manual. It is however; not so large that it will be out of place in a standard camera bag. This manual is a good example why books of this sort sell so well. The information in the manual is easy to find and many people seem to learn about the advanced features more effectively when using third party instruction manuals. David Busch Field Guide is written and organized so that it is not necessary to begin reading on page one. You may open the book to any page and learn something useful. The expanded focus point features of the Canon 5D III are powerful and they are important to master for good picture taking. David Busch explains how to use the 5DIII focus point features with good, large print, full color details. Customizing the camera's buttons and changes to the basic camera operation are also explained with the appropriate attention for the novice and seasoned photographer. There are some useful short cuts to bypass the menus and quickly get right to the changes you need. The Compact Field Guide should be the camera reference manual to include in your photog kit. Another benefit is your original Canon documents can stay at home, out of the elements and remain in good condition.

Wish I would have bought this three years ago. If you own this camera you must buy this book! Makes so much sense and easy to understand. This is a complex imaging tool, any thing to make using all the functions easier is a must have.

Most excellent book, far superior to the tiny manual that comes with the camera. This guy knows his business! Everything you need to know about the 5D Mark III and plenty of nice examples.
