I cannot overstate the perception-transforming effect of this book. It makes all the pieces of the spiritual puzzle fall into place and has confirmed what myself and many a wise person already knows intuitively: that much of what we are taught is WRONG. It resonates both on an intellectual and intuitive level. You will learn many things such as the true reason for the religious imagery of Christianity which always seemed random and vague to me; and other such facts as the true origin of the throne being the lap of the mother, hence the reason why ancient Egyptian imagery always depicts kings sitting in the lap of Isis; the association of the left side of the body (the right brain) with the divine feminine (location of the heart) and hence the deliberate patriarchal stigma of "left-handedness" e.g ancient word for left derived from the word "sinister" whilst the word for "right" always has positive connotations e.g "dexterous" (deriving from destra). The author really breaks it down to the bare essentials, even going as far as explaining the origins of words you never thought had any connection to each other such as the words menses, month, and mathematics which all were derivatives of the word "moon" and "mother" under the ancient system of goddess worship, the moon and nature and many other things being a key focal point of goddess religions because of the connection to women's cycles. There is much information packed in here (the book is quite thick being about 430 pages long). You can take much away from it factually and theoretically. The only thing I would say is that at times it felt a bit repetitive but that was due mainly to its comprehensive nature. A word of caution- this will appeal more to spiritual seekers who are quite advanced in their journey and knowledge of self. Otherwise much of the references, symbolism and commentary will go over your head. It's not solely an "intellectual" read. It's very deep and symbolic and is a book that you have to read when you're ready for it.
Beyond a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. Would say until this time Sacred Pleasure and The Chalice and the Blade were at the top of my lists for all time best books written for women...that was until I read The Great Cosmic Mother. Any woman that has a daughter would be wise to buy it and have her read it. There are so many questions when women gather and begin to open up and discuss seriously the topic of mysogyny and how we get here. It will be on the top of my recommended reading list at my women's center and available in our lending library.
I actually own 3 copies of this - 2 print (one was sitting free in a book give-away, so I couldn't leave it there!) and the kindle version. This book was my introduction to the subject and it is very informative and quite mind-blowing if you're new to the subject matter (as I was at the time, 10+ years ago). If you want this type information but without the spiritual overtones, then instead read The First Sex make sure you get the Davis book and not the one of the same title by Fisher as they're completely different.
Do you mind me mentioning that this book could change the world culture and save all of us if people would just read it? Used to think Riane Eisler's SACRED PLEASURE was the most important book I've ever read. Now I'll put Barbara Mor and THE GREAT COSMIC MOTHER as the best and most important book I've ever read. Mor takes us back to the real, true human culture and nature --- about how women originated human social life --- as opposed to how men have destroyed human existence over the last several thousand years. Imagine how futile it is to try and re-orient human relationships and society wi†hin the context of male dominated 'cults' namely Judaism, Christianity and Islam. We all should read Mor's book and have the courage to stand up for all that she teaches us.
This is one of those books that we should have been required to read during our younger educational years. This book carries so much depth of her story, and brings the ancient stories of our past into a sensible reality. Reading this book is like reading a history book. Only with this much of the gaps and the broken, dried up stories from traditional history are filled and written in a way that feels like truth recovered. Reading it right now during this time, of 2017, brings to light many of the issues that are present in our time today. There's a thread of women's herstory out there, and those who follow the breadcrumbs find it. This is one of those breadcrumbs. Five stars all the way !!!
This is one of the best books, if not the best book I've ever read. If its contents were more widespread, and if people knew about it, things would be different! I absolutely recommend it!
The book had some highlighting and minimal wear on the cover but in good condition otherwise. I haven't read it all yet, but what I have read is extremely important about woman in society, being the heart of society. it is a book that makes you feel so good to be a woman, friend, mother, creator and teacher. we women really have to know how important we are and make better homes and communities. we must be strong and recognize our power to create a wonderful world. A lot of it so far seems to be about studies on ancient women in European societies or white societies, but there is still info on Afrikan woman and other cultures in there. -Ila Addis
The divine Goddess is coming at full speed. I can feel her presence and the madness going on in the world is starting to make sense.
