Understanding that you are not alone, and your fears and anxieties are totally normal (even if they aren't shared by other mothers you know personally) can make all the difference in the world. I only wish I'd come across this book while I was still pregnant. I'm certain it would have made my post partum experience less traumatic. But, better late than never and I am so grateful to Hope Edelman for sharing her life and work with us. It's taken me a long time to finish because the emotions it triggers are so raw, but it has been an incredibly healing experience. I can already see that I'm going to refer back to it many times over the years to come.
Once again, Hope Edelman knocks it out of the park. With the rigor of a social scientist/journalist and the heart of someone who’s been there, Hope explores and addresses the primary issues faced by moms who grew up largely without one. With grace and humor, Hope provides spot-on insights that help explain how you may have been feeling or acting. Awesome book! Thanks again, Hope. I have read this book 4 times now. Having a mother who died young, this was first given to me as a gift so that I could understand my own fear of death. I ate it up, cover to cover. Whenever in need of further understanding of the impact of not having a mother or my children not having a grandmother, I come back to this book for guidance and support. The last time I wanted to read the book, I could not find my copy and ordered it from Amazon for my Kindle so it would always be at my fingertips.
I got this book in the year following my Mother's death, back in 1994. Since then, I have bought and given away countless copies. This book addresses, in an amazing way, the particular loss of a mother to a daughter, at any time of life. If you are a woman who lost her mom, or know a woman who has, get this book.
Interesting book that is helping me to better understand myself after the loss of my mother.
Such a stellar book for us mothers without mothers. Many of the things I knew intuitively but gave me deeper understanding into why I parent like I parent and lots of food for thought on the intricacies of parenting while healing and forgiving ourselves. I wish I had found this book when my kids were younger but has still given me a lot of healing insight to why I am the way I am.
Fantastic healing read for anyone who has lost a mother or a parent. Her writing and insights are spot on. Thank you for writing this book.
It was really, really helpful. My mother lost her mother at age 8 from pneumonia, pre-antibiotics, and is now 94 with Alzheimer's. She has always been odd, even before this disease. The book helped me to understand her childhood and put some perspective on her personality. However, it's impossible to change her now, so all I can do is try to understand!
