I was looking to take the Series 7 exam since I wanted to make a job change to get into the industry but since I'm not with a registered firm I've decided to start prepping for the Securities Industry Essentials exam given the upcoming testing changes by FINRA. You no longer need to be sponsored by a member firm in order to take the SIE. A friend of mine used Walker's Series 7 book to pass his exam so when I mentioned to him that wanted to get into financial services, he recommended that I look at the Examzone materials. I downloaded the SIE exam outline from the FINRA website and this book follows it exactly starting with capital markets, understanding products and risks, trading, accounts activities and finally the regulatory framework. Each of the book’s sections is followed by a review exercise that makes sure you understand that chapter’s material and then a review quiz that is more like the exam is supposed to be. At the end there are several full practice exams. Walker’s writing style is extremely clear and engaging, I actually have an undergrad degree in finance and I came away with a better understanding on the basic financial services concepts than I did from all of my college classes.
So, I've been back and forth on my opinion on this book and I'll tell you why. First and foremost, I own this book as well as the license exam manual by Kaplan so I can compare both.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________Pros: This book is very thorough. In fact, it is too thorough which is my main criticism- I'll get to that in a minute. For the pros, this book has sections on most everything that you will find on the SIE exam and more. Information on options, broker-dealers, the laws concerning IPOs, the various investment vehicles, the types of investment companies and their corresponding fees, Section 529 plans, retirement plans, annuities, etc. All of this is also found in Kaplan's materials, so you know that the SIE will cover this information for sure.In addition, I will say that the tone is a bit more accessible than the Kaplan material. This book sometimes offers examples when Kaplan doesn't. For one, the section on options in this book is FAR superior to the section within the Kaplan book. Kaplan still covers options, but options are very confusing and this book has information and hypothetical examples on options for a few pages whereas Kaplan largely brushes over the subject.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________Cons: The main problem with this book is that there is TOO much information in it. It has about 100 pages more than the Kaplan exam manual. This is partly because there are more pages devoted to the practice quizzes and review, but there is also more information. This book speaks much more in depth about annuities and municipal bonds than necessary and it covers some topics (like commodities and reserve requirements for broker-dealers) that Kaplan doesn't. For the record, commodities also don't come up on the practice quiz that FINRA offers online, so I doubt they are on the test.Lastly, there are editing mistakes in the book- small typos and even an instance where an entire paragraph was repeated on the next page. Unfortunately, even Kaplan's manual had a few typos as well. Publishers are rushing to print their study materials to get them out to market because the SIE exam was instituted in October of 2018. Companies want to strike first while the pool of potential study materials is small to get reap sales and the quality sometimes suffers.________________________________________________________________________________________________________In summary: this book is a fantastic primer for those like myself that are trying to familiarize themselves with the anatomy of the financial services industry, the practices, and the jargon. However, there is a decent amount of information in here that will likely not be tested and I would kick myself if I was tying to remember things during the exam that wouldn't even be covered. Yes, I enjoy knowing as much as possible, but the purpose of this book is not just to teach you for the sake of knowing. It is created and marketed to help you PASS THE SIE. In that regard, it has some issues because of the extraneous information.I DO think the book is comparable to Kaplan's manual, but unless you're a fool like me, you are not going to buy both. As a result, you will not be able to compare them and know what to focus on. My recommendation is:1) Buy the Kaplan book and take practice quizzes from them and on the FINRA site. If you find that you need more practice on more complex topics (like options), look around on the Internet or for other materials to bolster your understanding.OR2) Buy this book and disregard some of the content within. What content specifically? Well, I would take the online practice test that FINRA itself offers on their website (http://www.finra.org/industry/sie-practice-test) and compare it to the material listed in the book. From what I saw on their practice quiz, FINRA doesn't ask:-anything about commodities-nearly as much regarding annuities-barely ANYTHING about reserve requirements for broker-dealers despite the fact that this book has several pages on that subject________________________________________________________________________________________________________I hope this review gives you get a better understanding of this product and its alternatives. Good luck in your studies.
I passed the SIE earlier this week using the Examzone book. The writing style in this book makes the material (which can be boring) much easier to get through and I felt like I was actually learning the material, not just stumbling through it.I also went and bought online bundle from the Examzone site. The quizzes/exams were invaluable and I felt they helped prepare me well for the questions on the real exam. I watched the videos they have online that came with the bundle, there were a few topics in the book I just couldn't grasp but having it explained in the video really helped my understanding. I recommend following their study plan (also online and part of the bundle). At first I wasn't sure if I needed to use it but I ended up working my way through all the steps and, like I said, passed with an 87% so I would say it definitely helped. Overall great products and great end result for me, I will be using Examzone for my next exam for sure.
You can tell this book was rushed to market with the announcement of the SIE. Its text seems like it was copied and pasted from past books covering other qualification exams. It covers the bulk of the SIE content outline but is lacking in a few areas in section 3. It also covers some Series 7 material that isn't tested on the SIE. As someone else said, the practice exams put a lot of emphasis on annuities and life insurance. All that said, it did a good job covering MOST of the SIE material, and I passed. I would strongly recommend going through FINRA's content outline and flagging topics the book doesn't cover in depth. I would also suggest buying and taking practice exams outside of this book to catch any topics it misses.
Great product! It helped me pass the SIE! Highly recommend!
Exactly as described.Informative , educational, easy read.
Content was straightforward, however I felt it bounced around from topic to topic without any logical flow. Saw multiple sections of text that were cut and paste from other parts of the book.Practice tests were alright, although they focused heavily on annuities. Text was a bit wordy at times and lacked concise information regarding certain topics.Would have liked to have seen a review section with bullet points or main ideas summarized at the end of each chapter to tie it all together.Overall, decent book. I passed the SIE exam, but I used mostly my CFA studies and basic investment knowledge to get by. Disappointed in this book.
This book was very informative and I really enjoyed reading it. I give this book two thumbs up and five stars!
