I just finished my (first) reading of this marvelous and insightful book and I am so grateful to the author for writing it.I come from a family with many generations of estrangement. Most recently, my sister estranged me 5 years ago after 40+ years of a highly conflicted on-again, off-again relationship. When she estranged me this last time, my brother and mother took sides with her. I just learned my sister is dying of cancer.This book has been a godsend to me. It is by far the most scholarly and well-researched book on this topic that I’ve read.One of its great gifts is bringing the discussion of this topic - one that is all too often hidden away in shame - into the light of day. Reading it emboldened me to get up in church and light a candle for all who are hurt by estrangement. A dozen people came up to me afterwards to share their own estrangement stories. We are now talking about starting a support group using Aglias's book as the basis.This book gave me much to think about in coming months, as well as hope that I can learn to live more effectively with this so painful estrangement. I look forward to re-reading this book, doing the exercises, and digging into this work more deeply.Congratulations to Kelly Aglias on making a true contribution to the estrangement literature. Highest recommendation!
