I have about 15 years of home project recording experience, and there are new developments all the time. These can be hard to prioritize and track, as a lay person reading blogs on the fly. Plus, I had picked up incomplete info along the way.This book clarifies the essentials of sound processing, and makes them accessible to people with various levels of experience. The companion DVD illustrates many of the concepts in the book as well. I now have a more solid foundation on which to base key decisions - how do I best use the recording equipment I have, what new gear will I need, what is the best way to link components, and how can I create the best sounds using the technology at my disposal?I feel much more confident about building out my home studio over time, in light of current and future projects. This is a solid resource - highly recommended!

I purchased this book for use in the class "Producing in the Home Studio I" atFoothill College (Los Altos, CA). The instructor of that class is the book'sauthor (apparently: no author attribution is explicit, though there areacknowledgements in the book signed by the course author). You might thinkthat this would, therefore, be a good book for that or related purposes.Think again.The book is full of factual errors, poor editing, incorrect diagrams, etc. Anerrata would be very long. The book is nicely printed, but the text takes uponly about 1/2 the width of the average page, a substantial waste.If you must use this book, it is not _all_ bad ... but separating what's rightand what's wrong is what prompts this review: So much is wrong, that, as Iread material new to me, I had to wonder: is this also incorrect? Being curious,I looked up information new to me on wikipedia and other seemingly reputableweb sites (with grains of salt: caveat emptor!) and found that the book wassometimes incorrect there too.

I am working on a degree in Music Technology at my local community college (Foothill College) and pretty much have all my core classes completed. At the start of this last semester i was looking for a class that would fit my schedule and apply to my degree. I came across a course titled "PRODUCING IN HOME STUDIO I". While the syllabus made it look like it would be pretty much a review, it would apply to my degree.so i signed up.......My first surprise was that the Chief Academic Officer of Pyramind (a well regarded private Music Technology school) was teaching a community college class, and i had to laugh when i found he was selling his own book (the subject of this review) as the required textbook!Well i am here to tell you it turned out to be probably the best online class i have taken (and the book was the reason why). The book was fun (and sometimes even funny) to read. It contained a good amount of technical and historical detail but was still an easy read. A really great balance of material.The video and audio files were good as well. I specifically enjoyed the microphone related content. The DSP content didn't hold my interest as well, and the DVD interface could use a bit of an upgrade.Key concepts and processes that were touched on in other classes but were still unclear just seemed to be explained in a more understandable way, it really made sense to me.I recommend this Book!
I found this to be a great book. The info is easy to understand and really helpful. I read the bad review about this book and don't understand that statement. The reviewer states the book contains factual errors but I've not seen anything but great knowledge and solid facts.The concepts in the book have helped me to learn recording techniques and have a basic foundation to build from. The dvd included actually demos some of the ideas as to make it easier to understand. I can place mics now with a better understanding of what I'm doing and the way sound changes. It's like a recording class in a book!
I'd been struggling for years to learn how to really get right sound. There were many books out there, but it wasn't really get close to my brain. I'm not sure what it is, but even though same concepts and same explanation, I feel more comfortable reading this book rather than others. It's like a "I kind of know it" to "know it" moment. Thanks for the authors.
I found this book to be very informative. This book describes many different music recording techniques and examples that will be very useful for future musicians, mixing engineers, producers, or anyone interested in music in general. I highly recommend this book because it will instill a great deal of knowledge for anyone interested in music.
