Visited Anguilla a year ago and saw this book but didn't purchase it believing that it was simply a gimmick. Waited a year later and finally purchased this book. Wow. This completely transformed me back to those sandy shores and reminded me why I want to build a taco stand on a lovely island such as this one. How I wish I would have seen the island as Bob and Melinda did. I can't wait to read this book again to pick up the details that I missed the first time.

Ever dreamed of leaving the daily grind (not to mention winters) behind in favor of living on a beach? This is the book for you. I have tried this myself, failed miserably, and have a whole new appreciation of just being a tourist now. But I love reading stories like this that detail all the glories along with all the frustration and often panic in a warm and engaging style that makes you feel like you're right there with this intrepid couple. They followed their dream. They paid the price. And they reaped the benefits.

Caribbean vacationers who have ever wondered what it would be like to sell everything and operate a business on their favorite island retreat will find satisfaction in this easy going account of a Vermont couple who move to Anguilla. Anguilla is a sixteen mile long thirty-five square mile patch of land at the northern end of the gentle crescent of islands in the eastern Caribbean nestled close to the flashier and better known St. Martin. Here on this quiet island the Blanchards arrive with their life savings and a dream to open a restaurant. Their story is about the embrace of the gentler life rhythms of this special island paradise. For the Blanchards the secret of "island time" is a life of breathing deeper and walking slower. We follow the Blanchards during the holidays, a local election, a demanding wedding celebration, summer boat races, an employee's dismissal, a break-in, etc. Occasionally we are treated to a recipe, for example, banana bread or better yet, "banana cabana"! The gentle trade winds that are the text of this impressionistic account build to a natural climax - a direct hit from Hurricane Luis (1995). A great book once the reader gets past the inordinate professionalism of the author. The tale of these entrepreneur's escape to paradise was quite an eye-opener, and I became completely vested in learning whether or not their business venture in the islands would pay off or break them forever. This was my third read of 4 books on the islands and found myself captivated and enjoying the book and stories immensely. Once the book was done I missed the retelling of conversations in the island dialect captured by the author on a number of recounts. A blessing to me, I would recommend it to the business-savvy and the casual-interest-reader. Truly a marvelous story unfolded in its pages.

This is a marvelous book! I have been to St. Thomas and St. John, so I know all about their beauty but now I MUST take a trip to Anguilla to visit that magical island and to eat at BLANCHARDS!!!!Through this wonderfully written tome, I have fallen in love with this beautiful place and immediately upon finishing the book searched for the email address for Blanchard's, printed off their latest menus (!) and emailed the Anguilla Tourist Board so that I can begin researching my trip!This accounting of Mel and Bob's dream and how they achieved it is superb - you feel as though you go through each step with them; the agonizing ritual of ordering and receiving ANYTHING for the house or the restaurant; the warm, wonderful, colorful people of Anguilla who took Mel, Bob and Jesse into their hearts and their lives; the sheer hard work they put into the creation of this wonderful restaurant; the horrific hurricane that basically wiped out 2 years work - and more is in this hard to put down book.As a confirmed foodie myself, I feel as though I tested all of those recipes with Mel and WISH for the day that I can taste her creations myself - in person!The only thing that could have possibly made this book any better would have been to have color photos of the creation of this restaurant! That is the only downside to the book at all - you don't want it to end!Next step - get myself to Anguilla and have meals (lots) at Blanchard's!

I really enjoyed this book. We have been to Anguilla several times so can relate to places and the good people they refer to. We have also been to their restaurant several times and thoroughly enjoyed it. We knew the owners were from Vermont but never really knew how they came to own on Anguilla. Was really impressed with the hard work that went into getting it up and running. We would not have known about the book except for a cab driver who took us to the restaurant one evening and told us about it. We met Bob one time when we were there but not Melinda. We are looking forward to a return visit and hope to meet them both.

After watching the movie and loving it, I thought I'd read the book. It's a cute story, but it was just okay. I won't read this book again, but I'll watch the movie over and over again. I don't know why people say it's just like the movie, because it's really not. The basic plot is the same, but the "details" are all different...and it's the details I love about the movie. SPOILERS AHEAD: There are things I like better about the book (Lydia Ann is more understanding for example), but it was all completely ruined when Noah saw Andy taking advantage of Emma (nothing TOO bad, just forced a kiss...which is bad enough in my opinion) and assumed she "wanted" that and drove away. Then didn't give her a chance to explain because he avoided her. What if Andy had tried to do more? How could Noah not tell that she was trying to get away, even if she was in Englisher clothes? I could take all of the other differences and even appreciate the actual story/world the author created and not the one the screenwriter made, but after reading that part, I'll never read this book again. However, I'll watch the movie over and over again (and have lol).

This is the second book by this author that I have read. I really enjoy her writing. The first book I read was "Love Finds You in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania". I should have read it after this book. Both can be read as a stand alone if only reading one of these books. I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters of this book and the interaction of their individual stories. The chance meeting of Emma who is Amish and Kelly who is an Englisher and their unusual close friendship that developed kept me turning the pages non stop. Then there was Abby, Emma's sister who was a main part of this book. There was a lot of twist and turns. I just liked this book so much. I highly recommend it.

Excellent book! It differed only slightly from the movie! I stumbled on the movie and discovered the book. I love both! Very easy, predictable read. I love Amish fiction and this one did not disappoint!

Restless with her plain life and seaking an adventure she jumps at a chance to travel to another Amish community to be summer help in a window's quilt shop. She makes friends with a Englisher young lady and desires to try out pretty clothes and shoes. This story is about her struggles to stay Amish or not and where she wants to live. A Nice story.

This book was "charming", just like its name. I love the friendships established and how they were "by chance". The outcome of the book is relative to many events in the book. I loved it!

I read to the point it's a sin and this is one of, if not the best book on science and the people involved that I've ever read! I wish there was some way to give it more than 5 stars. It points out, but subtly, the problems with NASA and how the bureaucracy has taken over from the scientists and it also shows how hard it is to "go up against the establishment". How things will finally turn out with this "rock", the real hero in this book, isn't clear since there's still a great deal more we need to learn about Mars as well as about life in general but yet again I can't recommend this book too highly. BUY IT!

I have been fascinated with the Mars meteorite that was the subject of so much scientific controversy. So I was delighted to find this book to help shed some light on it for me.This got off to a somewhat slow start, which was necessary to give the background information on how this meteorite was found, and why it subsequently languished, all but forgotten, in a drawer for many years before someone finally thought to more carefully examine it.But what a rock it turned out to be. It turned into such a big deal and subject of intense interest that President Clinton made an announcement about the mind blowing discovery of what "looked like" life forms from another planet.These apparent life forms came to our planet in the form of microbial fossels, about one hundred times smaller in diameter than a human hair.This book becomes more and more fascinating as you go along. If you have an interest in astronomy and fossels this goes into much detail about the hundreds of scientific tests that were carried out on pieces of this meteorite by scientists all over the world as they tried to figure out what exactly was in this rock and if it was, in fact, biological in nature.As one scientist said after viewing a super-thin slice of this under an electron microscope, if this had come from a rock from earth it would automatically be seen as fossils of microbes. The anatomical parts were indeed present, as were egg shaped objects which couldn't be identifed aside from the abundant carbonite elements, which were clustered around the microbial shapes. There was water and carbon dioxide, as well as carbonites, contained within this fist sized rock.Over three hundred scientists worldwide examined and tested minute pieces of this meteorite, all drawing their own varied conclusions about the meaning of their test results. How does a scientist say with absolute certaintly that what his tests are showing are the result of life? It turns out the answer is not that easy. Yes, the tests do indeed indicate that everything is present in this amazing meteorite for an average scientist to conclude that there was life forms of microbes housed inside. But that doesn't mean with 100% certainty that this is evidence of life from Mars.A scientist has to be very very careful to err on the side of caution about such an important discovery. Nasa eagerly proclaimed that this Mars meteorite shows evidence of past life on Mars, but was forced to back away from that pornouncement by the powers that govern it, for unexplained reasons.I listened to this on my Kindle and couldn't wait to find time each day for the next thrilling chapter in this excellent book. If you have scientific curiosity about what may to date be our best clue about life on Mars, you will love this well written book. It is a detective story with hundreds of detectives piecing together clues about something that may be the beginning of one of the greatest discoveries mankind has ever made.

The story is potentially interesting, but the writing is so bad that it's painful. The author tries to use so many inappropriate analogies, metaphors, similes, adjectives, etc. She strives so hard to be poetic that is she disregards the science - which is what the book is supposed to be about. Also, she includes so many irrelevant details that it hampers the storytelling and drags things out. And she tries to make the event and the discoveries more momentous than it really is. Painful to read, but a story I wanted to know.

I highly recommend this excellent, very honest, well documented and balanced book. Everyone interested in the intelligent design controversy should read this book. It gives an accurate picture of both how science works and scientists as people which is quite in contrast to the public's perception of both. The book is about the scientific question of whether life once existed on Mars. The focus of the book is on a meteorite that researchers concluded is from Mars. Inside of the meteorite scientists have found evidence of bacterial life. When one figures in the dollar cost of Mars probes and the enormous time, money and resources spent on researching the Mars rocks, the cost is in the billions. Although much has been learned about many things in science from the research, a common concern is that the money could be much better spent elsewhere. One example is, one researcher has estimated that a billion dollars could defeat tuberculosis. Why spend this much money on Mars probes and on rocks to find evidence of life there? The reason is, if life, any kind on life, is proven to have existed, or to exist, on Mars this will demonstrate that, given the right conditions, life will eventually evolve most anywhere, providing strong support for both naturalism and molecules to man evolution. It will also strike a blow to theism and religion in general. In the end, this 394 page book concluded that there does not seem to be much good scientific evidence that the rock contained evidence of life, nor does there exist evidence of life, past or present, on Mars. On another point, it is commonly believed that J. William Schopf has proven the existence of at least 5 microbial life forms dating back to 3.5 billion years. I have been telling this to my students since he published his conclusions back in 1980. Sawyer documents that this claim is mostly speculation and good arguments exist to dispute this "well known fact." For example, see page 249 to 254 for Dr. Brasier's valid well documented scientific concerns about this claim, and page 254-260 for Schopf's attempt to rehabilitate himself. Sawyer reports that a Nature journal summary wrote that in the end "most judges gave a clear points victory to Brasier" and Schopf "had won few converts to his cause" (page 260). From now on after I explain to my students the "long held fact that humans have 100,000 genes has now been shown to be false" I will explain that the "fact" cited in your textbook that at least 5 microbial life forms dating back 3.5 billion years has been confirmed is also now very doubtful.

I follow the author on Instagram and definitely relate to her. I bought her book to not only remind myself it's okay to have anxiety but to help with friends with some comedic relief when they're struggling. There is even a part about being a friend to someone with anxiety. I found it extremely helpful. One friend in particular tends to message me when she's on the verge of a panic attack and this book gave me some great ideas on what to say to her to help. While reading this book I wanted to send photos of pages to my friends. I should probably help the author out by sending actual copies of the book to my friends.

Love love love this book! It’s like a warm hug from an understanding friend. It’s a short read, but something you can return to for comfort when you feel like no one gets it.

This book is officially my new happy/safe space. I’ve followed Marzi for a while on Facebook, so this was essentially a meeting of two of my favorite mediums for escaping a world of non-anxiety-having extroverts: social media and books. If you have anxiety (or if you’re trying to understand someone who does), please pick up this book. You won’t regret it!

Just like the first book from Marzi, "Introvert Doodles", this one is a collection of comics and vignettes detailing the life of an introvert in a humorous fashion. Every socially awkward person can identify, particularly if they suffer from anxiety. While the first book was focused almost exclusively on humor, this new one actually takes the time to offer helpful hints, tips and ideas to help, like the title says, "kind of coping".That alone makes the book better, as it can help even further as a major helper in making other people understand the pleas of those who suffer from anxiety and social awkwardness. If you are one of those, you know it's hard for extroverts to understand. Even when they insist they do, it's clear by their actions that they don't, even if they mean well. They will insist in inviting you to large gatherings and then leave you alone with people you don't know. They will press you to talk when you feel uncomfortable doing so. They will think there's a problem with you when you don't engage in the same activities they do. Well, this book can be a big help in describing to them what it feels like to be different from them.Of course, the book also helpfully reminds you that some extroverts do understand and they can be amazing friends. And lest you think this is nothing but a self-help book, rest assured the majority of it still relies on relatable humor for introverts, with the classic cutesy art style from Marzi's previous works.I recommend this book to everyone. For introverts it makes you feel understood and less lonely and for extroverts it helps you understand introverts better.

Kind of Coping is like getting a reassuring & validating hug from a book. Definitely recommend if you’re an introvert, anxious (or combination), or love someone who is. I laughed & cried at first look-through & plan to be gifting some copies out. 🌀❤️

The book explains what it's like to have general anxiety and social anxiety disorders through illustrations. The book is funny and relatable since I also have anxiety. Friends and family have not been able to understand what it's like to have anxiety, or why I can't just try harder or snap out of it. So, reading about others who experience the same things helps me realize I'm not as odd as I thought I was.

I love Marzi’s work on instagram and in her introvert doodles activity book, and I already cherish this book! As stated on the first page, this isn’t a self help book, but after reading it I definitely felt more positive and totally understood. She relates it to everyday situations which makes me feel less crazy for all the things my anxiety puts me through. I felt like Marzi was speaking directly to me and the experience felt personal, as if she took a look inside my brain and knew exactly how to relate and be there for me. She has such great insight and very helpful suggestions on ways to manage daily anxieties. I highly recommend this to anyone to suffers from any degree of anxiety! It would also be valuable to those who don’t but have loved ones who do so as to better understand. It’s an easy read and the illustrations are adorable and spot on. I’ll definitely reread it over and over in the future!

I bookmarked several pages (at least I _think_ they were marked), but besides going to those “me” or “good for me” pages, I know I’ll read this in its entirety again and again. Thanks, Marzi, for creating this book.

I have spent a majority of my adult life in the hyper-masculine world of the militray. I have been taught to suppress feeling and emotions to the point where I can literally turn them off like you would a light switch. I identify as emotionally retarded.Because I was "losing the fight" dealing with personal relationships by just not engaging or fighting so aggressive that the other person would want to quit and escape, I decided to try this.It wasn't a hard read at all. Almost like it was a written conversation I would have with a friend. And started to try it as I read the book, and by the time I finished the book, I had already gotten a success. It was a simple message that read "I appreciate you trying to work hard on our relationship, I know you are trying and that gives me hope."Try it, because it has worked for me. I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I am older and set in my ways. But it has already helped this old dog learn a new trick that could save me from being a old, grumpy and lonely man down the road.

This was a lovely quick read, and I would highly recommend it. It only took me two days of light reading to finish as the book is refreshingly short. Having studied psychology and being more than a little bit obsessed with all things related to therapy, I have seen this skill practiced in the most effective therapists. On my normal day-to-day interactions with people…not so much.So take a moment to think about the people that you love being around the most. Why do you love being around them? Obviously they’re awesome. Part of that awesomeness though is derived from the both of you being able for feel heard and cared for by one another. The best and quickest way to achieve that mutual form of love and understanding is through validation. Michael Sorenson uses charming stories to illustrate the overwhelming benefits and concise steps to create a practical approach that you can use in your everyday interactions. After having read it I’ve found myself trying to be more cognizant of times when I have the opportunity to validate a friend or a family member. While it has only been a week, it has certainly been helpful. The best part is that it is incredibly simple too.Quite a bit of the research utilized in the book is from John Gottman who is world-renowned for his research on relationships and what makes them work. If you are looking for books to read in an effort to improve your interpersonal relationships, whether it’s work, dating, marriage, etc., I would say there are 3 main books/authors to turn to. I Hear You- by Michael Sorenson, Hold Me Tight- by Sue Johnson (leading researcher/ developer of EFT), and The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work- by John Gottman. Combining the information of all three books will really provide the best tools for you to use in your relationships and give you the best results.There are only two things that I would complain about. 1) I would have loved to see references listed on the back so I could look into some of the studies that were mentioned in greater depth. This isn’t a problem for the average reader, just for people like me who want to dig into the research that was listed. 2) I would have loved more of the author’s insight on self-validation, but maybe we can save that for another book. ;-)Please enjoy this wonderful book and all the insight it provides. You really will see an improvement once you implement it in your life.Happy reading!

I don't normally write reviews, but I am already halfway through this book and I need to share my thoughts. This book really hits deep to the core. I Hear You not only is an easy read but it's a book that can help YOU personally. I think many of us have heard of the book How to Win Friends & Influence People, which is a great book, but written years ago before smart technology came into our lives. However, now with all the technoIogy its been harder and harder to connect with others. I feel this book has been written for today and the future of creating wonderful relationships. This book teaches some simple skills that can be learned and applied to your own life. I feel like we hear the word communicating, which we think that is just talking with each other. But really it's the successful conveying or sharing of ideas, feelings, and understanding. I think we can all work on our communicating skills. I mean, Who wouldn't want to? I am excited to apply and use these skills to better my own relationships around me. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone! I am actually buying another one for my parents! ha ha ;)

I don't know if I can add anything that hasn't already been said about the content of this book. But I will say that this book is exceptionally well-written. Michael Sorensen says he wondered to himself, "Who am I to write a book?" but he's either naturally gifted or else I want to know the name of his editor. The organization, pacing, and even the length of the book are right-on. His examples are also realistic and clarifying, and he answers questions just as they pop into the reader's head. Writing a good book is not easy, but this "amateur" author nailed it.

This book is really simple in its execution of explaining the power of validation, as well as how to do it according to the author's "Four-step Validation method".I'm reading this with my fiance as we have a few relationships problems and validation is definitely one of them. It's given me a new perspective along with an action plan to make my relationship better. I can say that the skill itself is invaluable for developing. But, personally, I would've liked to see other approaches to validation, especially in terms of conflict.
