From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up–Adam Fortunate Eagle entered the Pipestone Indian Training School at the age of six. From that time until his graduation at age 16, he spent each school year and many summers under the care of the teachers and wardens at Pipestone. Growing up with other children, some sent by their families and others enrolled as orphans, Fortunate Eagle experienced the loneliness of separation, the camaraderie of school life, and the absence of his culture. While traditional practices were not forbidden, neither were they taught. Piecing together his heritage through hunting excursions, visits to nearby Native families, summer trips home, and the thoughts and ideas of his schoolmates, Fortunate Eagle eventually matured into a proud, resourceful, well-educated young man. This journey, told through his spare narrative, is filled with school pranks, tender memories, and a growing sense of the world at large between 1935 and 1945. While his account does not follow the general bias against this boarding-school system, the author acknowledges its shortcomings. Brief language and bare, honest descriptions of adolescence add strength and truth to the story, making Pipestone well suited to high school readers. Fortunate Eagle's memories of his time in an Indian boarding school fill a vital need in the canon of available literature about the American Indian experience.Sara Saxton, Tuzzy Consortium Library, Barrow, AK© Copyright 2010. I enjoyed this book as a flashback to a time before I lived in this relatively small town. The author writes well and tells an honest recollection of his childhood experience. I only lived there for a few years in the 1970's and always wondered what I missed about the history of the area. As a middle school child, we enjoyed the state park and Native American history, but just didn't have this level of insight.
Having been raised about a mile from the Pipestone Indian Boarding School and having known some of the school's staff during that period in the late 1930's and early 1940's, I was delighted to read Adam Fortunate Eagle's account of his experiences there, and I'm glad of what he writes about it. I was excited to meet him personally recently and found him to be a delightful, humorous but serious, friendly, outgoing gentleman. You will enjoy reading about Stink Dormitory and the rough games the students played that helped made them men. Adam and I had parallel lives one mile apart at the same time and didn't know each other, although we may have seen each other at the Harmon Swimming Pool or the Orpheum Theater. This is a wonderful account of a wonderful early life of a wonderful man.
I bought this as a gift for my husband. He grew up around Pipestone and is enthralled by it.
Mr. Adam F. Eagle,His narration of his 10 years in the Pipestone School are a rare treat to a non-native. So many accounts are so totally negative of the Indian schools. He relives the stories as they come to him and the majority of the incidence are a positive event. I would not have wanted to live in the way that he and his siblings did. Saying that, they all became successful in their choosen fields in adulthood. There are humorous episdoes, and then the sa times. Mr. Nordwall, has taken charge and has made things happen.glenn Callaghan, US Army Retired
Loved reading Adam's story and learning about his experiences . His candid approach is refreashing; not everyone wants to hear the good things, so kudos and congratulations to Adam for telling it like it was for him.
Great book about the Native American school in my birthplace. Highly recommend this read!
excellent - my mother was sent there - gave me good insight into her childhood - she would not talk about it
I saw him on a PBS program. I would love to spend an afternoon with this man. I would like to just sit and listen to him tell me his life story. He has had experiences everyone should read about. He is a very talented artist to boot. Wish I could change the way we as a country have treated his people. They didn't deserve what they got and are still getting. God Bless him. Wish he could see the dream of his lodge completed.
